Aside from showcasing a slew of powers -- laser blasts from hands, dust whirlwinds that incapacitate foes, and freezing dudes in blocks of ice before knocking them off the top of buildings -- the demo also gave me my first chance to try out the newest DCUO HUD. Basically, a bar at the bottom of the screen is split in the middle and shows your ranged and close attacks. When you hold down L2, button icons pop up underneath the powers on the left side of the meter. When you hold R2, the same thing happens on the right side. It's an easy way to manage what the hell you're doing out there.
Playing as a hero, I threw busses, blasted bad guys, and beat on Lex Luthor's militia members. When I squared off against the human-controlled villains trying to break Doomsday out, we realized we were entering into a battle with an obvious end. See, when you get to brawling with another person in the world, the fight ends when one of you is knocked out. It wouldn't be fun for your character to get hauled off to jail or murdered or whatever, so this K.O. only incapacitates you for a short amount of time -- this is SOE's Rally System. The same rules apply to NPCs, but you can actually restrain them and leave the crooks for the police.
