Once you have finished Azzan's
The Wandering Scholar contract and Burz gro-Khash's
The Fugitives contract, you'll be sent back to the Chorrol Fighters Guild to speak with Modryn Oreyn. Oreyn tells you that your next duty is a sensitive one, as it involves Guild Master Vilena's youngest son, Viranus Donton. Apparently Viranus and a small contingent of Fighters Guild warriors were sent to Forsaken Mine with instructions to clear out the trolls that were inhabiting it. Modryn hasn't heard from them since and he wants you to investigate.
Forsaken Mine is quite a trek from the Chorrol Fighters Guild. It's located to the south of Leyawiin along the western shore of The Lower Niben river, so you'll probably want to make use of the game's fast-travel ability to reach Leyawiin's west gate and then continue south on foot. You'll eventually reach a skull-adorned door leading down into the mine.
At the base of the mine's first tunnel, you'll discover the crumpled bodies of Ariente, Ashtus Chenius, and Cartrus Gavinius, all of whom you can only presume were part of Viranus' hunting party. If you continue forward down the sloping tunnel, you'll discover more bloody bodies - Cargas Laftrius and Mattius Wotrus - along with a couple of chests to loot. However, the direction you want to take in order to delve deeper into the mine is directly to your right as you enter the first main room. It's within this section that you'll discover the first corpse of a Blackwood Company soldier. The tunnel just beyond leads to the Forsaken Mine Lost Passages, but you'll need to do battle with a single troll before you can reach the door.
The second level is infested with trolls, so you'll want to move through the area slowly. For an easier route, you can move the rock along the northeast wall in the first main chamber, which will reveal a tunnel leading directly to the cave's final room. Whichever route you choose will eventually lead to its deepest reaches, where you'll discover the dead body of Viranus Donton. A search of his corpse will find a bloody journal describing how the Fighters Guild mission was going well until the arrival of the Blackwood Company. A battle ensued and Viranus was fatally wounded, though he was able to cling to life long enough to pen the journal.
At this point, it's time to return to Modryn and tell him the sad news. Viranus' death seems to genuinely anger Oreyn, though it's most likely only because he was personally responsible for the mission. After proclaiming his hatred for the Blackwood Company, he asks that you lie low for awhile so that he can speak with Vilena about the death of her son and how to proceed next. By "lying low", Modryn actually means for you to visit Azzan and Burz gro-Khash again for further contracts (
The Stone of St. Alessia from Azzan and
The Noble's Daughter from Burz).
