The Vampire series originally started out as a non-computer based role playing game, and has quite a large following. So when a Source Engine based PC version was announced back in 2004, to be released alongside Half Life 2, it sparked interest among all kinds of communities. A proper, well grounded RP that wasn't D&D, coming to the computer? Hmmm... speculation abounded.Frowned upon ending? Getting blown to bits might have been a little depressing, but I felt pretty satisfied with slitting LaCroix's throat and walking away from the Ventrue Tower like a king.
Despite being riddled with bugs and having a universally frowned upon ending, VTMB proved to be a massive hit. It's in-depth character development, mountains of side quests, and freedom to handle them in almost any way you pleased, '˜sucked' people in and held them fast. The Vampire world proved to be dark, devious and bloody, where surviving as a Night Stalker involved far more then just running around, biting everything in sight. The secrecy of your whole society was at '˜stake', and woe be it if you angered the powers above. You'd have some very relentless Vampire hitman on your undead butt before you knew it.
Sadly, the original developers (Trokia) closed down only a year later (leaving the community to fix the plethora of bugs still plaguing the game), so no sequel was every planned or announced. RP fans everywhere wept in despair.
Surely another company could pick up the rights easy enough? It's not like Trokia invented the series; merely turned it into video game form. Vampires are the next best thing to Zombies, why has no one else taken such a ripe opportunity? Hmph. I guess it' just low priority compared to the games they know they can sell easily. I'm looking forward to Call of Duty 16 Universe at World at Microbe at War!!
