Another area where Vanguard is sparking lots of interest is in their character advancement system. While Sigil has not yet released a list of the available classes, they have said that there will be some classes players will recognize, and some new ones that will still be familiar to pencil-and-paper RPG players. What makes Vanguard's characters interesting is that they are all (multi-sphere) characters. What that means is that at any given time, a character actually has two classes. One is an adventuring class, and one is a crating class. New players will be able to visit different guilds and try out different classes in each sphere before they are forced to choose one class in each sphere for their character. What makes this system unique is that a character does not simultaneously possess the qualities of both spheres. Rather, the player must choose which sphere he is going to play in a certain area, and remain in that sphere until returning to a given location (city, town, village, or the like). Crafting is important to the game as it drives the economy, and allows players to create weaponry, harvest resources, etc. This setup also encourages players to group together, as a character using his crating class will be more vulnerable to attack than a character using his adventuring class. While not defenseless, the crating class will definitely be less hardy than the adventuring class.
