Lost Odyssey Reviews

Lost Odyssey is certainly not perfect, but as a fine example of JRPGs, it's damn near. The game oozes quality from every pore and provides a stern answer to people who think writing in videogames can't be mature or deep. No, there's nothing "new-gen" about the gameplay, but Lost Odyssey isn't trying to conform to some arrogant notion of what's "innovative." It's just trying to provide an emotional, lengthy, memorable RPG experience and makes no apologies for using truly old school methods in doing so. You can take your innovation and shove it -- the gaming world is better for having software like Lost Odyssey in it, no matter how aged its mechanics.
Next up is ActionTrip's review with a score of 7.6/10:
The four-disc 360-exclusive could treat you to somewhere between 35 and 50 hours of gameplay. I recommend it to JRPG fans. Should you be the kind of person who prefers western-style RPGs the likes of KotOR or Mass Effect, Lost Odyssey may feel as a slight disappointment. The immersion is there, the gameplay can be fun, but overall, Lost Odyssey fails to "go the distance" as a modern-day RPG. Whilst it offers a unique twist to the genre, it definitely lacks more content and depth to be regarded as a truly great RPG. Hardcore RPG gamers won't find it rewarding enough.
Then there's Strategy Informer's review with a score of 7.5/10:
As emphasised earlier, Lost Odyssey certainly isn't for everyone. You have to really enjoy the JRPG genre and be prepared to put in the hours to get the most out of the game. And if you preferred the faster-paced Final Fantasy XII over the more traditional turn-based gameplay, Lost Odyssey will feel like a giant step back in time. However for those of you that do put in the hours, do enjoy the more strategic turn-based encounters and are prepared to put up with a few odd gameplay elements, Lost Odyssey will not disappoint. The story is delivered superbly and has more than enough high moments and emotion to keep you engaged, and the almost perfect combat system will reward those that put in the effort. It's not without its faults and it does very little new, but it is a rewarding experience and a worthy addition to any JRPG fans catalogue.
And, finally, PALGN's review with a score of 8.0/10:
While there is no denying that Lost Odyssey has some inherent flaws from a genre that refuses to reinvent itself, these issues pale next to the compelling story. RPG fans who stick with it will find that the many hours they put in are well worth it once the ending scene is reached. Given the technical and inherent design flaws, the game falls short of masterpiece status and it probably won't '˜save' the JRPG genre, but it's certainly given us an experience that will stick for some time.
