Pixel Perfect Gaming gives it a 4/5:
As far as role-playing games are concerned, Avernum: Escape From the Pit revitalizes a classic genre that hasn't been in the limelight for quite some time. Not only does it present an interesting story with flexible play mechanics, but countless hours of challenging gameplay. If you're looking for a new role-playing experience, look no further than Avernum: Escape From the Pit by Spiderweb Software.
Game Dynamo gives it a 73/100:
To sum up, Avernum: Escape from the Pit is a decent RPG. There are things that work against it, like the control complaint I mentioned. Apart from that, I had fun playing the game, exploring the land of Avernum, and slaying monstrous goons left and right. If that sounds like your idea of a good time, then you'll be in for many hours well spent. Unless you keep tapping the wrong grid-squares in combat, that is.
Games On Net doesn't score it:
Despite these things, Avernum offers easily fifty-plus hours of entertainment for what is - at $9.99 on Steam - an absolute steal. You could pick it up directly from the developer for the confusingly higher price of $20 instead if you wanted, but that's a decision best left up to you. Just know that if you've got enough imagination to see beyond the graphics, and you don't mind a game that requires you to actively look at each pixel in a room to see if there's anything lootable or clickable, you can settle in for a long, rewarding adventure.
Game Chronicles gives it a 9.0/10:
Overall, though, Avernum: Escape from the Pit is a rather good game. It captures the feel of 90s RPGs better than pretty much any other game out there, and scratches the nostalgia itch that players who grew up in the days of Black Isle might have. It's not without some minor flaws, but they don't do much to subtract from an otherwise excellent package.
TouchGen gives it a 3/5:
If you can't get enough old-school RPGs, Avernum is indeed what you are looking for. Even in light of my negative experiences with the game from a technical perspective, I cannot deny the satisfying tactical depth and rewarding RPG hooks built into Avernum's core.
StrategyPrime gives it a 4/5:
In the end, Avernum is a title that we would recommend anyone who wouldn't mind its retro look, open-ended nature and the old feel of isometric, turn-based RPG's. Avernum is good old-fashioned RPG fun that calls us back to basics, and for that we love it! Only issue that remains which version to recommend, PC or iPad. While both look and work flawlessly, in this case we will shift towards the iPad, since this platform needs more inspiring and entertaining games like this one. Also, in the coming summer, there should be something worth playing on your iPad for those moments of peaceful relaxation on the beach. Avernum is one of those games.
MobileTechReview gives it somewhere around a 4/5:
If you are looking for a serious role-playing experience, look no further than Avernum. The content, the customizability, and the open-endedness means that you are getting a lot for your App Store Dollar; even if the graphics and sound aren't quite up to 21st century standards. There is tons to do here, and you will likely find yourself caring deeply about your characters by the time you are done. If you're put off by the tile-based graphics, set those prejudices aside and give it a try. In no time, like my son, you won't be able to put it down.
And ImpulseGamer gives it an 8.0/10:
Overall, Avernum: Escape From the Pit is a solid RPG experience that combines classic style, a compelling story, and generous content to create an indie game that is very much worth your time. If you're looking for a complex single player RPG and value content at the expense of visuals, don't miss this title.
