I have to say, tactical voting seems to play a huge part in voting in the UK. At the last local elections, the Tories got a lot of seats - but I think it's less due to people voting for the Tories as disillusioned people voting against Labour, for the only party that they think will beat them ...

@DW: The gas bit is fine, it's the pilot I get all worked up about. You know, "stove + cooking oil + me not home + open flame"-kind of worried. I prefer things to be off, meaning "really, completely, no burning parts off" when I leave the house.

Did you try not leaving the cooking oil on the ...

@Fable I would love to get out of the hotel, believe me, but when you have to be at work at 8.30am and leave at 7.00pm, it doesn't leave much time for sightseeing. :( At least in Paris the job isn't actually in the hotel, but a short walk over the Seine!

I understand that while Istanbul is Euro-cosmopolitan, once you're in the hinterlands, tolerance of independent behavior among female tourists is very, how shall we say, limited. Would this be a fair assessment?

Well, I didn't get very far outside our five-star hotel, so I wouldn't say I was the ...

The camel-dowry suggestions is a tourist thing that some people do because they know the tourists still enjoy it :D

It's a good job Sleepy wasn't with me, I think he would have caved in if he was offered a few camels.

Even at the Grand Bazaar it's not easy to find a to bargain with ...

Why don't you want to be sold in exchange for chickens? Are you saying you're so modest you're not worthy of the chickens in question?

Actually a whole farm was offered, although it didn't sound like it was his to give away... no camels though. :(

@Minerva - I am out of sightseeing time now ...

You know...if these stereotypes regarding the British and sex have any validity at all...it's a wonder they ever managed to procreate in sufficient enough numbers to colonise a significant chunk of the globe... :p

Perhaps they are extra-virile to make up for the infrequency?

Wake up with a cheap red wine hangover in a hotelroom with one of those minarets right outside the window. When that priest starts screeching, it's truly a sublime experience. A "must-do" when you visit Istanbul... :D

LOL, but surely a raki hangover? When in Turkey, and all that... :D ...

... on business, but we have the weekend off. We spent all day today (well, okay, the afternoon, had a lie-in) dodging sales pitches in the grand bazaar, trying not to be sold in exchange for chickens, and trying to avoid being ripped off by taxi drivers.

So does anyone have any tips on must-see/do ...

What would 47% of men want a 50-inch plasma TV for, if not to watch *ahem* European arthouse movies?

I can't help but wonder how much that 47% are getting anyway...

Finally got around to seeing Transformers last night and I have to agree with whoever said it was rubbish. It's not even a good mindless action movie IMO. Plus it's about half an hour too long.

The Simpsons Movie - meh. It was okay, but too much like just watching the TV series. They don't really do very much that you haven't seen before a million times, or that justifies a movie rather than a TV series. So yeah, it was enjoyable, but not remarkable.

Just so you all know, I am spamming ...

Very true and over here also with the annoying tendency to cut those movies in half at the most unsavory moments  .

Really? Your cinema must be old school. I haven't seen a film with an interval for ages.

Combine that with the price they dare to charge at cinemas nowadays, I prefer to ...
