Also you can pretty much negate the effects of the freeze/petrify by going into inventory mode. The effects will wear off eventually and you can return to the game and continue the fight.

You can also increase your intelligence to lower the cost of skills. Of course your class also affects how much skills/atributes cost to 'level up'.
