I find speculation about Assanges quality of character to be completely beside the point. The important thing is that people like Bradley Manning have a channel to expose information. Now, in any half decent world that role would be fulfilled by the press, but since we don't live in a half decent ...

You mean you don't see the difference between a terrorist and a soldier? Really?
I always find it offensive when people compare the military to some criminal scum.

Well, It depends entirely upon what the soldier in question is doing. I see a big difference between a terrorist and someone like ...

Since the above seemed more like a lecture than a starting point for a discussion I'm not really sure where to start, but I'll try to comment nonetheless.

How the idea that terrorism* exist due to envy and hate of freedom became so common that it can nowadays be expressed with a straight face is ...

On that subject, is there anyone with some financial knowledge who might be able to explain why it's legal to buy something with borrowed money and subsequently offloading the debts on the item you just bought? To me it sounds obcene.

Now, when Liverpool are on the verge of administration the EPL announce that they will break the rules for them and not impose a nine point penalty if they go into administration!!! Uneven playing field or what? I hope that if that happens Portsmouth sue the EPL for every penny they can get ...

It's zombie carp. In dwarf fortress 40d the regular carp was overpowered for some reason, frequently resulting in the death of your fishermen. Even though the game featured more dangerous enemies than the zombie carp the abundance of carp and the terror felt the first time you realized that zombie ...

Poor imagination on my part leads to plenty of recycling. The most prevalent theme for quite some time now have been naming myself after any of the curious creatures found in burgess shale.

No, you do not need dosbox. Even though the game looks as it's from that era it isn't. It's actually a quite demanding game computer wise. I'm not running the version kipi linked to though, so I'm afraid I can't give any advice.

@Chanak: Basically it's mostly a design game. You can't give orders directly to a dwarf, and even if you could I believe it would be of limited use. The main thing you spend your time doing is building their fortress, designate which areas to excavate, what furniture to place where and what the ...

Strategy, toil and tantrums

Since it has been months since fable last mentioned King of the Dragon pass, and after I repeatedly promised myself no to title this thread "Best game ever" followed by a large number of exclamation marks, I've decided to advertise another much underappreciated title on this board.

Dwarf Fortress ...

Just to add a perspective (I'm not endorsing nor condamning the ban at the moment, mind you): It was a direct democratic decision. Do you ignore it because of democratic values like freedom of religion? Wouldn't that make the whole idea of democracy hollow?

Democracy does never apply to all parts ...

I always point and laugh whenever some religious nut job argues that this or that is an encroachment of freedom of religion, but in this case I believe it is actually a valid argument.

The reason for my scorn is that it's usually about some law that is equal for everyone but inconvenient for ...

All of us are guilty of ignoring logic from time to time--some of us, much of the time. I'm just not sure why this invalidates teaching Boolean logic to children as a useful aid, since from all I can tell, it's never been attempted.

The thing that scares me is a self righteous culture that I ...

I wonder if we aren't thinking at cross purposes, here. When I think of Boolean logic as a means to disprove fallacies, consider improper transpositions:

If p then q.
Therefore, if not-p then not-q.

or--

If not-p then not-q.
Therefore, if p then q.

With proper examples, this is (in my opinion ...

I was thinking of basic Boolean concepts, yes, as well as at least the concepts behind a series of logical fallacies, regardless of whether a child learns the Latin for each, or not. Nothing bad can come of that. Unless of course you were serious, and care to give examples of why children should be ...

Assuming that by basic logic you are talking about something similar to propositional calculus or boolean algebra I'm not sure I'm so fond of the idea. Those tools are quite limited and in my experience can cause a bit of damage to anyone who uses them recklessly.

Related to that there might be a ...

would anyone object or care to comment on the idea that God or some form of Deity created the Earth and everything else by science?

Yeah, I would object to that for the reason that the addition of a god doesn't increase the explanatory value of any scientific finding.

I still find it reasonably ...
