new game questions...no spoilers

This is my first time playing IWD but I just finished the BG series and want to give the infinity engine another go...a couple of quick questions about creating a party:
I played around w/ importing characters but was surprised that a couple were already level 12...it seems Easthaven is designed for ...

backstab questions...

Is there a trick to a successful backstab? My typical scenario is sending in my thief (Imoen, playing ToB)) unseen and striking from behind with a ashort sword...seems like I almost always miss. Does it require a dagger? Do I need to click on one of the buttons before the attack to indicate backstab ...

my favorite of late: Steelhead Pale Ale
the worst: any Budweiser product

But offer me a cold Bud on a hot day and I'm on it like white on rice.

Thank you...the walkthrough is misleading on this (IMO), but no matter, I'm off to see the wizard.

**spoiler** Solar problems

Beautiful people,
I'm having trouble getting out of the gate on ToB. I'm stuck in the Abyssal Fortress (not wanting to help Sarevok, of course) but Solar has come and gone without unlocking the room for my first test. I've checked the ToB walkthrough and it seems as though it should be straight ...

I AM taking a lot of guff from the members. I suppose I should address now as I'm heading in to that city next, which is bound to get ugly. Good fun.
Thanks all.

Hello again,
hmmm...I've never even considered the reputation/alignment facet of the game (the plot thickens)...too busy killin'. The PC is lawful evil actually, not what I had written earlier, further demonstrating my ignorance of the matter. It seems my reputation is 5, 5 stars is good...then I ...

Jaheira snapped -SPOILERS!

Here's the basic scenario...
The party enters the Beholder Dungeon in the Underdark and while defeating the first two beholders (a tough fight for my party) Jaheira is petrified. It took me several reloads to get through this first area, so I thought it worthwhile to run back to the merchants and ...

I grant you this much...Jehova's Witnesses wear some pretty cool hats.
Aside from that, the gods remain unknowable. I continue to view blind adherence to a religion or atheism as weakness.
It's not so bad not knowing once you get used to the notion (or lack of).

Viva agnosticism!

it would help if you tell us what your party is made of, otherwise it will be pretty hard to give you hints that suit your situation :)

Be sure to put a SPOILERS designation in the thread title when you start something like this, next time. Just as it says in the sticky thread at the top of the forum, which you no doubt read. ;) I'll do it for you, now. Next thread without it may vanish. Happens. Forum magic.

Irenicus in the Asylum (SPOILERS)

greetings beautiful people,
I have gone through the Asylum and am freeing the prisoners to help in the fight w/ Irenicus. He is turning out to be one tough booger here and the prisoners are not helping much. One prisoner eventually casts timestop and proceeds to whoop up on my crew instead of ...
