I am not sure of the vanilla version, But you can NOT take Shadowmere to Shivering Isles on the GotY edition.

It's kinda funny you said you did this at lvl 10 since you can't start the quest until your lvl 20!!! Anyway the best way to kill Umbra is to get your sneak and marksmanship as high as you can, like at lest expert lvl, and take a good aim in sneak and let fly!!!

My friend told me that red ruby cave has a lot of good loot in it. He said he found the ring of perfection in a chest in the cave! He also said it contains good armor as well.
