Something similar happened to me too once..........
in my case it was because I patched the game without the savegames inside the game folder.....
then the savegames just did not work...............

First you said

the game does not export the characters for you........
you have to do it yourself.....
there is an export button in the record screen (press the R button while in game...were you can view stats and stuff.......)
but be careful........some items can be exported ...

you should not become too dependent on the alt key funktion....

i have this monk who rarely gets hit......i also have five other spellcasters/marksmen at safe distance........i make lots of creepy enemies sorround my monk.......and then they all die ...
