really, it depends on what you like in a game...
for roleplaying elements, IwDII is lacking, but you can add in your own roleplaying...
it is primarily a dungeon crawl, with a lot of combat...
imho, the best attributes of IwDII is the custom creation of a party of up to 6 characters... so you get ...

I would definitely choose a cleric for the 3rd party member...
the healing and the summons will be a tremendous help for the party throughout the entire game, imho.
as for a monk, svirfneblin is always a solid choice, since they have the Wis bonus, as well as innate spell ability (invisibility ...

also, briefly, here is what I would consider a very strong 4 person party for HoF mode
ftr4/barbX - some dwarf race, will use a two-handed axe and probably hammers as a backup weapon, all stat increases will go into Str, and with starting Con at 20, this char will have quite a few hit points at the ...

the best party ever? hardly.
no offense to you, you seem quite enthusiastic about your party, but your party itself is not even optimized...
the barbarian could have 4 levels of fighter to get weapon specialization, and possibly maximized attacks if you want...
your barbarian should also weild ...

I play almost exclusively evil parties...
it is much fun...
but, it depends on what type of evil you like to play...
as a general rule, my party is chaotic evil... they kill anything and everything, as long as it helps them accomplish their personal goals...
more specifically, they use ...

they are immune to most, if not all, magic...
fire spells actually heal them...
lightning spells slow them down...
and they have something like 50/+3 dmg reduction, so unless you have +3 weapons, you likely wont even scratch them...
what I did was this:
summoned about 4-5 undead
bunched them ...

if he really liked DII, you can compare it to that...
though I am loathe to compare pseudo-roleplaying games like IwDII to almost pure hack and slash games like DII, there *can* be a lot of similarity depending on how you play...
if he really likes the hack and slash aspect of DII, but perhaps ...

it sounds as if the best tactic to succeed with a solo melee character is hit and run tactics...
with that in mind, what are the thoughts on a build based on a rogue?
i.e. something like ranger1/barb1/fighter4/rogueX ?
(or ranger3/barb3/fighter4/rogueX with a tiefling to avoid multiclass exp ...

what is the rest of your party?
from your description, it sounds like the character as a whole is expendible, imho.
consider replacing him with a druid or cleric or arcane spellcaster...
or maybe replace him with a monk that can perform your scouting duties...
you already have one rogue, and he ...
