Pools of Darkness fresh party advice

Hi again, everybody. It's been some time since I last came here. Good to see that the forums are still around, and I hope you've been doing well. A long while ago, I asked for help with the previous Gold Box games in this series; the advice I received was very useful, and I hope to once again call ...

:( Sorry to hear. I'm not too sure how importing characters works, myself, since I always started fresh.

I hope the idea of taking one cleric works out for you. My team was not uber powerful by any means, but I found the heavy melee power to be very useful as the enemies became both more durable ...

Hi there.

This party looks excellent. I made my only cleric a human female in order to get the bonus for taking one. The annoying strength cap only comes into play for the warrior classes in humans; for clerics, it's 18 either way IIRC. No, you do not need a ranger or a paladin; they work ...

Fireball, stinking cloud, and hold person. Playing at level 1 with maxed out characters is quite hard, and the fight at the end of the slums will probably take everything you've got if you do it at the first opportunity, but once you have level two spells and someone with more than 20 hp the ...

I'm much more familiar with a horribly mutated and modded installation where, for example, all random encounters are as tough as they can be regardless of level, and enemy mages are utter abominations that instacast 12 lines of dialogue worth of protections as soon as they see you, so my experiences ...

I prefer the flail for two main reasons, which I will explain in detail below. My apologies if I am ungodly long-winded about it.

1. It is obtained much earlier. The axe is found deep within Watcher's Keep, which you might not enter until relatively high levels, and does not reach its full power ...

I have indeed found a couple of arrows of detonation in BG2 before. According to the information on the BG2 section of this site, they are in a niche in a wall in the Underdark's beholder lair.

Thanks both for answering. The WIS detail is very minor such that even if the paladins gain a couple of extra spells for it, I will still dump it in favor of physical stats. I could load up TOB and create a couple of paladins there to see how different stats affect their abilities.

I've decided ...

Playing this thing again

For the...13thish time, maybe? The compulsion just strikes every once in a while. There are some parts of SOA that I've gotten entirely sick of by now, but somehow it always seems worth it to get to the good parts again.

I'm just looking for a little party advice and some help remembering a couple ...

This is one of the bigger problems I have with this otherwise great game. It's frequently a railroadfest. You MUST side with either thieves or vampires, you MUST go to Spellhold, you MUST do so by boat, you MUST pretend you don't know that Irenicus has taken over the Asylum, you must, you must, you ...

Sorcerers do not even notice gear other than stuff like the robe of Vecna, rings of Wizardry/Alacrity, etc. Once a sorcerer gets PfMW alone, his powers exceed that of any item in the game. As for horrid wilting, I don't recall it bypassing magic resistance, but I think you vastly overstate the level ...

If Kelsey knows Spell Immunity (and if not, I recommend he learns it; it's very useful), you can use that to protect him if you know what spell is instakilling you. I forgot what the demonknights liked to use, but I thought it was finger of death. If you have to, you can pick up a scroll if one of ...

That's true re: the game being winnable with 1 in every attribute. I sometimes wonder if the "tactical" mods I routinely dump on the game detract from the experience in some ways, because I've always felt like the first, plain vanilla run through was the most fun because I could run with anything ...

Kensai in particular just doesn't mix well with the game and is very easily abusable. All of the Kensai's disadvantages can be circumvented trivially via dual classing. I'm a bit surprised that they put it in, actually, for more than just that reason. I don't see how the PC could be a kensai if he ...

That is a relief to hear, honestly. I was dreading the idea of grinding to 3 more levels than I ended CotAB with on ogres in the wilderness XI. I would much prefer the melee9-10/caster idea with at most 1 or 2 guys with more.

Ranger/cleric sounds fun for the novelty of getting 3 different schools ...

I had a paladin, ranger, fighter, two elven fighter/mages, and a pure cleric. The multiclasses only reached level 9 in magic user, so my arcane power could have been stronger, but I don't regret the decision due to the number of apparently magic and/or fire immune enemies in the game.

The paladin ...

I'd suggest picking up a divine caster. Viconia has the advantage of being recruitable in BG2 instead of being one of the NPCs who are killed off or ignored. I have always hated the way BG2 forces the same three NPCs on you regardless of alignment or choices made in the first game - it almost killed ...

Tanks as always.

Oh man, I intentionally have avoided NPCs up till now because of the...less than stellar AI in the games. I will see if I can put up with her though if like Alias and Dragonbait she makes comments or observations that add to the story (in their case, I took the walkthrough's advice ...

I went ahead and killed off the Beholder Corps because the dungeon it's in is very small and easy to get through, and it's against my nature to leave a stone unturned in a CRPG. It was even easier than I figured it would be though, because drow lords are more susceptible to fireball than I imagined ...

casters cannot cast when they took damage before in that round.

O_O

This whole time, for two or three weeks straight of many-hours-a-day play, I have wondered why my fighter/mages are sometimes unable to cast spells after moving towards a more advantageous spellcasting position. This is ...
