I've searched for help on this, but all the existing suggestions are either on my cheese list (i.e. Shield of Balduran) or require a mage.

I'm soloing a cleric/ranger (multiclass; Chapter 3, 13th/12th level); SoA fully installed and patched, no ToB though.

Lark's got it. It took me ages to work this out.

IIRC, you CAN use a staff for backstabbing. Anything normally usable by thieves can be used to backstab.

Nalia's cool; she gets the high level spells before any other NPC. And I like her ending. It seems fitting somehow.

I had loads of problems with Jaheira's quest, as do many others judging by the amount of stuff about it on the net. IIRC, if you don't buy the locket then you are stuck and the romance will not progress.

You will probably have to poke around using the CLUAConsole to find out what stage your romance ...

I only ever play on a 5 year old laptop (mac). Shouldn't be a problem.

If you like Chaotic Commands, try memorising three of 'em, casting them on your party members then cating Wondrous Recall... see if you like Wondrous Recall now

On the banter front, Korgan is more entertaining, it has to be said, though he also has incompatibilities with certain characters. Mazzy has an amusing relationship with Valygar but that's about it I think.

That explains a lot! I'd assumed it was me being careless with a fireball or something. Is this patch part of the standard SoA/ToB patch or is it a separate one?

I'm currently playing Mazzy as the main tank / party leader. She's pretty useful. Once you get to higher levels, the majority of the damage you deal is from bonuses, so using lesser weapons may be less of a loss than you think. Also, there are some nifty short swords which give you buffs: e.g. free ...

I know there are loads of these lists, and I've read a few, but one thing that always occurs to me when I read 'em, packed as they are with stuff like "buff with all known protection spells and three chain contingencies with Time Stop and Improved Alacrity", is "Do these people rest before and after ...

A similar thing happened to me in Irenicus's Dungeon. I killed the Lesser Clay Golems before they were "activated" by the alarms (i.e. I cheated by using knowledge of the game which would not have been available to my character).

Then the Golems came and kicked my arse and I could not lay a finger ...

I never tried to use the controlled mind flayers as troops. I thought the main reason for having the circlets is to let you control one mind flayer to go and open the doors for you. I don't think the game designers intended people to use them to have a battalion of illithids at their disposal so it ...

I'd recommend Jan. He is a useful mage as well as thief and ranged weapon dude, and when/if you get to ToB he will get Use Any Item.

This would be an interesting project; I look forward to reading your efforts, not least because I only ever play the game in this way (but always end up dying and reloading at some point).
