I talked to Celestine and got the key. Where are the catacombs? I left her rooms, did I do something wrong?

Besides being the most irritating location in the game due to the jerkiness of the graphics, I cannot seem to open the chest in the fire temple. Is there anything in there worth sweating over? Is there a way to "bash" the chest like in other games?
