"Don't worry about what the guys are saying about Hell's Kitchen."
"You had other priorities, I'm sure you would have helped out with the shootout."
Well, that's what I always get after the first day on the job. Played the game countless times and I'm always helping out at the shootout outside of the 'Ton hotel. But they're always saying that as I come back to HQ. Is there something else to this?
I'm asking because something weird happened. Do you know those two UNATCO troopers who complain about Paul and want to give you the gas grenades he have them? Well, I accepted them and headed off towards the NSF troopers. And there was a firefight! I threw the gas grenade at them and the weirdest thing happened. The friend-or-foe indicators around the NSF soldiers turned green. But the other UNATCO troopers just kept shooting at them anyway, so there really wasn't anything else I could do.
A glitch? I got the feeling today that there is more to this little shootout. Deus Ex is the kind of game that keeps surprising you, even after eight years. Has anyone ever passed through this early part of the game with different results?

So they're not related? Hm. I got the feeling there may have been an alternative to fighting or something.

Heh, I just had to write this down somewhere. I guess it doesn't matter if I spam my own thread.
I've played Deus Ex for a long, long time. Coming in to nine years now and yet again I witnessed a brand new dialogue tree. Without spoiling too much, try doing the following. When you 'turn in your resignation' to UNATCO there is a little dialogue between Manderley and Simons about the former losing his job. It triggers when you run into the room and get too close.
Just stand in the doorway and kill Manderley before that cutscene starts. JC will have a few things to say to Simons.
This game never ceases to amaze me.

Game spoilers are below, so you've been warned.
The thing that really shocked me the first time I played was when Anna tries to kill Lebedev before your dialogue with him finishes. She succeeded, and instinctively in a fit of rage I instantly started shooting her and killed her without thinking. I then thought...damn...I guess I've broken the game...only to have your radio pal come on and say: "Damn, you killed Anna! I'll erase that from the logs, and she was way out of line, but seriously..."
It was at that point that I really understood that Deus Ex is an incredible game.

If nothing we do matters, then all that matters is what we do.
I know! I at one point booby-trapped the door she comes through and kept him alive. I don't remember how the dialogue was different though. Lebedev didn't reappear later in the game like some of the other characters do.

I think the friend or foe thing may have been a glitch. But when they talk about the shootout that's a different thing that happened elsewhere with your brother, Paul.Tricky wrote:"Don't worry about what the guys are saying about Hell's Kitchen."
