I would like to ask you a question: do you have good definition of spirituality or spiritual experience? What's the difference between spirituality and religion and spiritual experience/religious experience?
Short answer: no :D You should ask Fable, he has an answer for everything ;) But to give it a try, I would say that religion is a system of worship, whereas spirituality doesn't necessarily involve worship or belief in a coherent system. Or ummm, something  ;) Why do you ask?

Perhaps fable turns up, after all he is a Mod so he should read this :D

Eh, the reason why I ask is because I have recently read several studies where peoples degree of religiousity or spiritualy were examined, but it difficult to compare these studies since different authors use different concepts. For instance, I'm just reading a recent study where they have checked what areas of the brain is activated during "religious experience" and earlier, I read a study about people getting "spiritual experiences" when electromagnetic currency is lead through their temporal lobes.

Take a look - page 342: "If der Moench bumps a long-neglected bar thread, he shall have exclusive rights to a barrel of his choice." See, right there in black and white.

@CE: ah! talking religion, eh? Perhaps you should ask a monk! ;)

Hmmm, but Fable doesn't turn up every time you mention his name... unlike T'lainya... :D

I guess if there was a standard definition, then your different authors would probably have used it. Do they explain what they mean by "religious" or "spiritual" experiences?

Yes it has, but not in the way you might think :p

How is our local sheep tonight?

@Monk: Great! A monk! Help me out with the definitions, will you? I actually had a real monk as a patient once, when I worked as a clinician. A fascinating man :)

Of course! Us monks are a fascinating breed! ;) If you ask me, religion is the opiate of the masses - mere nothing - pomp and circumstance - foolish at best, and dangerous at worst. BUT spirituality, well, now, THAT is something else entirely! I believe that we all have a spiritual side (not, mind you, some mystical "spirit"), and that the degree to which we are virtuous is the degree to which we embrace that spirituality.

Hows that?

Ah, Georgi - only a pint? I'll be needing another, this one appears to be empty. :(

LOL :D It's great when people turn up as soon as you just say their name :D

The problem is that very often the authors refer to different scales they have used to measure the experiences, and I'm not familiar with those scales since I don't work with religious experience normally. The papers I read often talk about stuff like "feeling a presence of a greater power than man", "feeling united with a greater whole" etc. I don't know whether this is religious or spiritual experience, or both.

That's great! :) But what, IYO, is the difference between the two? Is religion the structured, organised form that Georgi indicates above, whereas spirituality is something more "personal"?

What is the nature of our spiritual side if it's not mystical?

Sorry for getting philosophical ;)

*Lighting his pipe, and starting in one his second pint*
Yes, indeed, I think Georgi made an excellent point. Religion is something some group of people have agreed upon and has some structure or organization.

Your second question is answered by your last: what is the nature of sprituality: PHILOSOPHY! So, please, do not apologize for becoming philosophical: it is your only path to true spirituality! :)

You did Högskoleprovet? (Translation for all you non Swedish speakers: it's a test you take to get admittance to university studies.) What education have you applied to and how high result do you need?

Watch out Dottie, and cover your behind - here comes Sleepy :D ;)
