Eh, the reason why I ask is because I have recently read several studies where peoples degree of religiousity or spiritualy were examined, but it difficult to compare these studies since different authors use different concepts. For instance, I'm just reading a recent study where they have checked what areas of the brain is activated during "religious experience" and earlier, I read a study about people getting "spiritual experiences" when electromagnetic currency is lead through their temporal lobes.

I guess if there was a standard definition, then your different authors would probably have used it. Do they explain what they mean by "religious" or "spiritual" experiences?

Of course! Us monks are a fascinating breed! If you ask me, religion is the opiate of the masses - mere nothing - pomp and circumstance - foolish at best, and dangerous at worst. BUT spirituality, well, now, THAT is something else entirely! I believe that we all have a spiritual side (not, mind you, some mystical "spirit"), and that the degree to which we are virtuous is the degree to which we embrace that spirituality.
Hows that?

The problem is that very often the authors refer to different scales they have used to measure the experiences, and I'm not familiar with those scales since I don't work with religious experience normally. The papers I read often talk about stuff like "feeling a presence of a greater power than man", "feeling united with a greater whole" etc. I don't know whether this is religious or spiritual experience, or both.

Yes, indeed, I think Georgi made an excellent point. Religion is something some group of people have agreed upon and has some structure or organization.
Your second question is answered by your last: what is the nature of sprituality: PHILOSOPHY! So, please, do not apologize for becoming philosophical: it is your only path to true spirituality!
