Repairing: Excellent concept, flawed execution
Can't remember if there was any other armor that can be used to repair that one, but all the NPCs who can repair should be able to repair that one too. Though keep in mind that the result condition is dependable of your repair skill...

I agree with the OP. The repair system is flawed and the rate at which weapons degrade is extremely unrealistic. The biggest problem is the cost of repair and the fact that you never have a good weapon. I'm still early in the game and Moira is the best repair person I've run into. She took all of my caps to upgrade my assault rifle to 54% and after a few fireants the things is useless. I'm out of caps and am running low on ammo for my hunting rifle.
I hate using cheats but I think I'm going to have to at give myself a decent rifle or I'll never get through the game.

I had a similar problem with Hunting/Assault rifles, but never truly had the problem with Ammo for the 10mm, and with the Weapon Mod Kits mod (PC only), I have a really good weapon (Laser Sight, Silencer, Extended clip, auto-fire.....).
One of the perks does increase the chance of finding Caps, and another for ammo.

If you follow the Main Quest or otherwise fight against Super Mutants you will have an endless supply of (chinese) assault rifles, hunting rifles and miniguns. There's absolutely no reason at all to waste caps on repairing these incredibly common weapons. I usually don't even pick them up since i've got dozens of them in my Megaton locker already. Another easy way to get lots of similar weapons are the Raiders respawning next to the Springvale school. There will usually be a melee, hunting rifle and shotgun dude. I only let NPCs repair unique items that cannot normally be repaired.

Fallout3 is an amazing game, an absolute catastrophe for social life, for as long as you start playing there isn't any time for such trivial things...
I mean, it's Fallout, man!! Super Mutants, PipBoy, Big Guns...
...mmm Guns you say, and we all know that for guns to work as it should in games such as this they have to be in top notch condition and to do that you have to ...REPAIR them! Marvelous! Brilliant!! You could do that in Oblivion, in System Shock 2, even in Deus Ex (i think) and it was an essential part of the game world, giving it depth and credibility. Why not in this game, too? Well...
Ok, let's just say it straight out. Repairing as it is in Fallout 3 sucks. Big time.
I was unpleasantly surprised and extremely irritated to learn that in order to repair a minigun, for example - which in the game weighs, what, 20kg?- you need not a repairing kit or/and some scrap metal, but... another 20kg minigun!!! I mean, are they serious??? For crying out loud, what have they been thinking??
Why didn't they use repairing kits as in System Shock 2, so that in order to repair your gun/armor it is your skill that counts, not the availability of the singular weapon/armor you're looking to repair or your strength/carrying capacity?!? Oh, and, you know, your baseball hat (+1 perception) cannot be repaired with another simple hat (also +1 perception!!) 'cause, well, errr... they are... different?? :speech: WTF???
Now, let me say that I'm thrilled with this game. Really. But this repairing issue ruins my game experience. Especially in advanced levels, if you are not a melee fighter and so strength is not your priority (in my case is set to 6) then half the time you have to go back to your stash in order to patch things up. Simply unacceptable for a game this magnitude and class.
Any comments?
i think i have an idea that would fix ur problem they could make a tool bench where u could repair weapons and armour but u would have to have the right tool and some scrap metal say a hammer and 1 scrap metal repairs assault rifle too ur max based on repair skill.
And later on, some of the raiders start packing major heat. AR's, Missile Launchers, CSG's, 10mm SMG's. Some later Super Mutants will also pack ML's. On a rare occasion, I'll see a raider with a sniper rifle too.anarchistica wrote:If you follow the Main Quest or otherwise fight against Super Mutants you will have an endless supply of (chinese) assault rifles, hunting rifles and miniguns. There's also a few places with Chinese Remnant forces that you can sweep up to get some Chinese AR's, Chinese pistols (Good for repairing the Zhu-Rong Chinese pistol) and the occasional sniper rifle.
[Potential Spoiler]
And if you're desperate, you could always raid the National Guard center. In the range, there's about a dozen AR's and a few 10mm SMG's, as well as a sniper rifle. Just watch out for the bots.
