Torn between 2 melee, 1 archer, 2 cm, 1 nm.; or 3 melee, 1 archer, 1cm, 1 nm.
Still pretty new to ds2, but is 3 melee/1cm gonna be more viable than 2 melee/2cm? [Just having 1 archer(my main) and 1 nm(Taar-healer/ice)---and one of the other above.]
Opinions -any- please.. ty

Both are good combinations. At the end of the day when you reach the higher levels and tough guys it all boils down to armour and health, your combat mages will deal out a lot of damage but they will go down fast. My preferred setup to cream the opposition is:
- Melee - shield and single wielding tank to draw the hits
- Melee Dual Wield
- Melee Two Handed Weapon
- Ranger (Crossbow to keep at a distance but with heavy damage)
- Combat Mage (in autocast use summons+curse)
- Nature Mage (At start of attack in autocast use summons+heal, when the going gets tough use heal+buff) keep resurrect handy. In really ****ty situations fall back on the Invulnerability power and head for the hills if it's too tough!
Buff up all your characters so they can heal and/or augment resistance/attacks with wrath spells (make sure you alernate teleporter or conversion spells among you non mage characters to build them up) Take the same approach with Ressurection, it saves carrying scrolls..
Place summons spells in all characterss autocast slots to buikd up their magic levels.
To me this is the "soft" option. your other alternative will take a more subtle set of attack tactics - play how you feel best and what gives you the most pleasure:

my opinion...
hey guys, i like both ur decisions, im still playin on merc coz im playin sloooowly and realy tryin to njoy all aspects of the game ,
My custom guy is using shield mele/nm coz im planing to buff the stone of fist powers...this is the BEST tank EVER...
Deru is going 2 be assassin (REALY DESTRUCTIVE DMG) ...
TAAR is my healer ... completely built 2 be HEALERRR... and some ICE DMG spells n stuff...ill buff her NM and CM skills to take advantage from all skills that MAGIC offers sooo ... she need to stay away from battle when the game get tough...
I'm planin to have ATLEAST 3 meele and as im thinking now ... 3 meele 1 range 1 combat 1 healer is the BEST of the BEST strategy... my custom guy also have some healing powers (even though absolutely basic) sooo its pretty balanced party...
Later on in the game ill take EVA (2weapons) and this guy SPARTAN but i dont like him 2 be 2handed weapon... its better to reset his skills and to make him with SHIELD... with 2unbeatable tanks in the front + Eva ... the mages and Deru r realy well suported to do their thing ...

My choice
I would have 2 melee or 1 if nesersary
melww fighters don't tend to do much damage but they can take a lot of damage
archers have v good attack and not bad defence while mages have rubbish defence and good attack
i tend to use the melee people as a distraction while you blast the enemy with arrows and magic
Mephisto

Fortune favors the bold!!!

1 melee 2 assasins 2 CM 1 NM ... nooooo way for them to bring u down!!!! VERY STRONG powers provided by the assasins and the CMs ....even the melee can be dual wielder (NO SHIELD AT ALL)...
In matter im still merc now on BW, and DAAAAAAAAAAMN these monsters are too weak...not even pleasure to kill them, i can sit in he center of the fight (on wait mode) and doin nothing just checkin how long it takes for them bches to take me down ..... and these bstards shouting and kickin - NOTHING HAPPEND, they cant take even a quarter of my health (even on mages) well yeah, everybody have healing magic on autocast ... i was thinking...ok ill finish BW on merc and ill be maybe 60+lvl after i finish it, then by the rules i must start DS2 on vet..... these guys will be lvl 40.... whats the pleasure, im 20lvls OVER...helloooo i kill them with the sound of my fart only!... i hope it wont be like that but if u follow my thoughts...the game become senseless...ill reach level cap maybe somewhere in DS2 on ELITE....which mean on ELITE BW they have no chance to touch me and i just cut n slice through the jerks like butter ..... all i have now its meele + ranger + cm +nm(healer with lots of ice dmg) .... when i point at BOSS monster the last character dont even have a time to react (the NM coz his casting rate is lowest than the others) .... make no sense to play .. the Last Dark Wizard fell down for no more than 2 minutes....but Valdis... OMG that was the biggest joke in the game ..WAAAAY TOOO EASY TO KILL... no chance for him to touch me, very predictable attacks and all...too easy to avoid and too easy to fill his filthy body with arows and all!!!...im kinda dissapointed bout anything i saw after 1act! first act i was playing it for ... 3-4 days maybe... lol the rest for 8 hours was GONE, than of course 1 full day chasing all the quests
There is NO best...

Boss429 Party (Character Level 85)
...BUT, you want 'colorful' characters. Every character you build, has unique capabilities, exactly how you want to shape them. Basically what you are doing, is making your own recipe for DS2. A bit of this... a bit of that... and you get a unique charatcer...
At the end of the day, I haven't heard of any 'tool' you can use, to actually measure your party's performance. Eg. I want a 'number' at the top right of my screen, showing me my DPS.
Basically what you want, is a place where you can 'measure' your party, and 'see' all the hard work you put into them. Like an online TOP 10, where you can post your scores in different situations.
All I do now, is run my party through different tests, and see how they fare.
Here is a couple of my tests:
Test 1: Indestructibility
Result: After 2 hours of standing in a mob of 200, only 2 died.
Test 2: DPS
Result: The Boss429 Party wiped 60 monsters in 24 seconds, resulting in a DPS of 42 000.
Test 3: The Ganth
Result: The Ganth was beaten in about 2 minutes.
Test 4: Most Powerful
Result: The Dual-Wielder is the most powerful character in the game. In Test 2 the 6 member party cleared the room in 24 seconds, but the Dual-Wielder (using his hidden powers) cleared the room in 10 seconds, resulting in a DPS of about 100 000+ - no other character has come close, except the Archer with his hidden powers.
Those are the type of tests I put my characters in, because everyone always says that they have strong parties but theres no numbers to back anything up. A friend, Sacrosanct, beat the Dark Wizard in 10 seconds with the Dual-Wielder - that's impressive. No bugs, no cheats, because I tested it.
See, any party is powerful, but is every party unique and colorful?
Adios

- 1 x 2 Hander/Dual-Wielder
- 1 x Fire/Cursing Mage
- 1 x Death/Lightning Mage
- 1 x Embrace/Wrath/Healing Mage
- 1 x Ice/Healing Mage
- No Potions
- No Pausing
- No Summons

Here is a couple of my tests:
Test 1: Indestructibility
- Question: How long can they stand? Can I go and make myself a cup of coffee without worrying about them dying?
- Location: Zaramoths Horns.
- Goal: Round up as many monsters as possible, from the entrance where the Twin-Staircase start, to all the way up to the Final Ascent. Monster count - roughly 200 - takes about 2 hours just to round them up - and see how long your party can stand.
- Characters: 6 Member Party (2 x Melee, 2 x CM, 2 x NM)
- Offensive/Defensive: Defensive - no attacking.
Result: After 2 hours of standing in a mob of 200, only 2 died.
Test 2: DPS
- Question: What's the DPS of my party in a battle, if I unleash ALL my powers?
- Location: Lower Zaramoths Horns, Big room with eye-laser inside.
- Goal: Round up the monsters, count them (70 monsters - you'll round up only 60) and add up their HP (Health Points). Their HP is about 1,1 million combined. Round them up and blast them, using a stopwatch.
- Characters: 6 Member Party (2 x Melee, 2 x CM, 2 x NM)
- Offensive/Defensive: Heavy Offensive
Result: The Boss429 Party wiped 60 monsters in 24 seconds, resulting in a DPS of 42 000.
Test 3: The Ganth
- Question: Can my Solo Combat Mage beat the Ganth... without moving/dodging/running?
- Location: Water Chapel.
- Goal: Beat the Ganth by running up to him, and staying right there next to him, and see if you can beat him (with his gigantic Health Steal and all).
- Characters: ParaBellum, Solo Fire/Cursing Combat Mage, Level 85.
- Offensive/Defensive: Heavy Offensive
Result: The Ganth was beaten in about 2 minutes.
Test 4: Most Powerful
- Question: Which character in the game is the most powerful?
- Location: Lower Zaramoths Horns, Big room with eye-laser inside. (Same room as Test 2)
- Goal: Round up the monsters with a Solo Character, and see who is the most powerful.
- Characters: Sartan, Solo Dual-Wielder, Level 85.
- Offensive/Defensive: Heavy Offensive
Result: The Dual-Wielder is the most powerful character in the game. In Test 2 the 6 member party cleared the room in 24 seconds, but the Dual-Wielder (using his hidden powers) cleared the room in 10 seconds, resulting in a DPS of about 100 000+ - no other character has come close, except the Archer with his hidden powers.

But, does anyone else have trouble keeping mages alive? My nm has usually been healing/summon in auto, and icebolt as her off spell. My cm has a summon and a curse in auto. I have even taken off her curse, and totally had nm do no healing.. and they still both die alot..
My melees hardly ever die..ever.. i mean i realize they are tanks, and the mages are mages, but mine seem to die really alot.
im just wondering at this point, should i have 2 mages? or even any ?? lol
btw my main is ranged.. which while he doesn't die much..he doesn't seem to doing too well.. dmg is good with xbow, but is so slow
Suggestions welcome and appreciated

Health Steal
Hi,
Because most mages are fragile, I use the buff 'Health Steal' on my party. My party has 4 mages, so keeping them alive is very important. A 6% Health Steal, could make your Mage invulnerible in a battle. Try it.

Yup, Health steal certainly helps.
Work your other (not combat mage) players up in Nature magic by summoning teleporters or any other basic nature spell, that way you can add low level healing spells to their spell book (it's a virtuous circle coz they continue to develop their nature magic skills) you can also add low level summons to accelerate skill improvements..... By the time my melée and ranged characters got to level 90 they were also pretty good at healing

Party combination
AVE CAESAR, MORITVURI TE SALVTANT !
I would consider a 4 members party - 2 melee, 1 archer and 1 nature mage. I would discard the combat mage because in BW your archer will become a nice assassin with enough "combat mage" skills (as I already did it, I "fired" my Finala and replaced her with Ressa - much more powerful character, on Elite level of course).
You could finish the game even with 2 characters I think - see Hegi (please correct me if I'm wrong), he used 1 melee and 1 nature/combat (combination) and reached level 95 on Elite (better than me!).

Hi everyone. I've been playing for a few days and started the game over many times, just because I'm trying different combinations of partys. What I'm using now is a full mage party. No melee, no archers. I think the game is too easy with melee on your party. Unless you only go with a party of one or two that is.
So my party now looks like this:
First character is a curse/death magic mage. Lots of cursing power is great, especially to fight mobs if you don't have melee that can hack away in cose range to weak them. So you need to give your enemies weaknesses so that your spells kill them fast before they get too close.
Second character is NM. This one must master healing, buffing and icing. It will take some effort to develop all the needed skills, but it is working nice because I have no other party member to share exp except my first character, because of...
Last character: ...my pet. Yes, I use a pet. Since they don't take experience from battles they are excelent for this kind of play I think. And since i have no fighter nor archers in the party, i feed him everything belonging to those classes and he evolves vey quickly, since finding magical items in the game is quite easy. Especialy if you have a human and equipment that improves your chance to find magic equip.
The bigger problem I have is with bosses. I try to follow the no-potion rule, but with some bosses is just impossible with this kind of party, this early in the game.
Oh, but I kind of cheat and both my mages have summons to support. And that's it! Any tips on how to improve an all-mage party, please tell me.
I was thinking on building a party with no pets and all combat mages. One death, one lighting and one fire. But I had eventually to use healing magic right? I've read here that the best way is to use teleporters and summons to improve. Is that a fast way?
Sorry for the long post, I'm done.

More than 1 way to heal...
Don't look at the NM and think they're the only ones that can heal in your party. The other characters can look after themselves in different ways, which is just as efficient as the NMs Healing Magic.
Take my Solo Combat Mage for example - He's a 1 man army, and don't think because he has skills in other areas, that it affects his DPS. He can bring the Level 85 Ganth down himself, without running/moving, healing himself, in about 2 minutes.
Healing Options:
Also, why let a CM spesialize in a certain skill? I use all 4 routes; Death, Light, Fire and Curse - in the end of the day, DS2 gives you more than enough skill points. Theoretically the game only gives you 127 points (129 if you're human) but in practise it gives you alot more. My Level 85 Mage has 285 skill points with kit included, so he is geared for any spell, with a massive DPS (Each plasma ball deals 2200 damage), 6500+ Manapool (way too much anyway), 790 Armor (again, way too much), a Drown of about 300 per/sek, etc, etc, etc.
My opinion; Spesialize in all skills for CM, and if you want to build a party full of CMs, it means that they ALL can switch to whichever Damage Type is needed in any given situation, and that party is going to be very very powerful.
Let me give you an example. With Life Embrace + Drown/Infect, my Mage can stand in any huge mob, without lifting a finger, and not get hurt. When I say huge mob, I'm talking between 100 and 150 monsters. The bigger the mob, the more powerful the effect of Life Embrace + Drown/Infect.
Basically, my Mage is more vulnerable between 3 monsters, than 300.
Hope this helps, Zebedeus.

Healing Options:
- Nature Magic - Heal, Cascade, Rain, and the other 1 I forgot.
- Nature Magic - Life Embrace (My Solo CM runs on 6% - indestructible)
- Combat Magic - Vapirism
- Health Regeneration - Not my favorite, nor very effective in my opinion
- Nature Magic - Absorbtion (Mana problems solved)
- Mana Regenration - Not my favorite, nor very effective in my opinion.

So many diff ways to play this game for sure. I basically started over again..went thru merc and now at vet again. Only this time my main is cm, lother melee s/s, deru archer, tarr nm, and then ice elem and pack mule. Not using any summons at all, and the 4 humanoids all are healing and buffing. For me this is so much easier. (my other party was main-archer,3 melee,cm and nm--all with summons, and not much buffs)
so, so far my conclusions are that summons don't seem to be a big help, and 1 melee(maybe 2 at most) works best--archers i just dont know about either way. lol. And that buffs seem to make big diff.

"Hidden" powers...
The DS2 developers made a mistake. They didn't create a bug because it falls within the rules of the game, but unintentionally created a combo that beats anything in the game, and the lucky character that got it, is the Dual-Wielder. In BW it disappeared because the developers read the forums to make the game better, and fix unintentional bugs - that's why forums are there.
Power: Get your Dual-Wielder a couple of skill points in cursing, so that you can use either 'Drown' or 'Infect'. Now, run into a room and start cursing all the monsters. Once you're satisfied that enough monsters are cursed, hit 'Elemental Rage' and see what happens.
Enjoy...

Mer mode.
Mer mode. 4xCM (ALL Lightning-Static blast + power), Kill the Archmage "false dark wizard" in 10 seconds. (without boosted anything using Shrine).
After finish the game. 'IS DAM BORING' using all CM, or to be more specific, All lightning CM. All mob is like piece of cake. Mostly 2 short end them to pieces of junk.
Should go to multi-character classes type next time. I have restart a new party.

kinda booooooring...
Sirine, if you didn't notice the whoooole game is WAY TOO EASY no matter what kind of party you are using, just there is no ballance. It was kinda interesting only on merc difficulty in ACT1 .... thats it! AFTER that when u get some good items and build up some skills and some powers, maaaaan its just NOT a challenge, after merc difficulty act1 i just lost HOPE in this game. Compared to Diablo2 this DS2 its just nice graphics and few more details in the character built .... but the most important thing BALANCE is missing! If you are 5 levels + above the mobs ... they cant touch you, if you are under (only on merc) you cant cause any dmg to them. Another story is on 70+lvl, nobody can stop you no matter what lvl are they or what dmg you do, its just walk in the park, how about items....the game is designed only for characters untill lvl 80....AND THEEEEN ... its like the game finishes on lvl 80 coz there is NOOOO GOOD UNIQUE OR SET ITEMS for heroes ABOVE this lvl... its like GPG runout of ideas in the end....so instead looking for new party, better have a look for new game, coz this piece of JOKE ... its just not worthy!!!
