Answers to "What happened, GB?"

In the thread "What happened, GB" several of us really old members appeared. The thread is of course focused on GB and not us as individuals, but seeing the likes of Kiddo, Weasel, Minerva, my countryman Karembeu made me curious to find out what actually happened to you all.

What happened to me? Back in 2001 when I joined this forum, I was a PhD student in neuroscience and although I worked quite a lot, I had far more time to spend on entertainment than I have now. Back then I only had to focus on my own research - now I'm a bloody ass. Professor and have to deal with teaching, making courses, collaborating with lots of other groups spread all over the world and supervise my students. I've spent a large part of this year creating a 5-year plan for a project that's going to be performed all over Europe.

In my private life, I'm the mother of a very active and talkative 4-year old but I'm divorced from her father. After having worked as a guest researcher in the US for 2 years and in Japan for a couple of months, we are back in Sweden. Living in the US was a terrible experience for me and although I was offered a very good position I just could not live there, particularly not with a child. I just can't accept that kind of society, so I was happy to return to my old university.

As for why I don't hang our here anymore; I have no time to play computer games, so the connection here is lost while I stay in touch with some of the old members I used to interact with via Facebook and occational e-mails. And I still think I am the GB member who has met most other GB members IRL :p

Ah yes, the advantages of living and/or travelling in Europe ;)

My story is similar to yours CE. Joined up as a cocky kid in his final years of high school. Somewhere along the lines I got married, had a child, moved almost 3,000km's interstate, got divorced and now coming full circle I'm back to studying again. I start my B.Sc next month

I'm enjoying life, I game oh maybe once a week if I'm lucky but otherwise I've gone back to my first passion which is music and try to attend as many gigs as possible when I'm not looking after my little boy who is also 4!

Oh, I thought this thread was about what happened to GB? GB used to be full of energy and now it's almost dead. :eek:

Interesting how the passage of time bends one's memories?

Here's how Gruntboy viewed the Icewind Dale Board during January 2001:

Is this forum small 'cos IWD is too easy?

Thought I'd liven up the IWD board - what about some of them thar fights eh?

Sure there's some tough parts to it (some people might disagree with fighting Behlifet at the end - i think he's pretty mean). Overall its simplistic (but fun!) - so you don't get as much discussion as for BG2.

So no "wah-wah, I prefer BG2" people please. Yes, I like BG2 and I know you can do it multiplayer , but I'd like to hear about people picking their party line-ups for IWD.

And these are over 3 different threads during this game's peak period of interest, between the release of the main game and the expectation of the expansion.

Reading through those early threads I can honestly say, for the IWD board at least, I've had some steaming discussions with kmonster, gawainBS, Wise Grimwald and the like over the past couple of years which poor old Gruntboy could only dream about.

But anyway...

Back to the 'what happened to all the BG2 fans?' discussion ;)

Only BG2 fans? No KOTOR, Fallout or even Witcher fans (to name a few)? Long time member here as well but I joined because of KOTOR. :p

Same here. I had played rpgs before, but KOTOR introduced me to D&D. Through the Banshee, Baldur's Gate became my next stop along the road, followed by PST, NWN and.. I don't remember.

I confess a more than passing interest about whatever happened to some of the main presences here on the GB forums. Fable in particular, whatever happened to him? Surely someone knows.

For myself, I suspect it is a common story. I joined for a love of BG2 and quickly was captivated by the exciting SYM thread. I was a pretty standard high school kid who used this forum as an anonymous venue to talk about things teenage boys are afraid to talk about. That trend continued and I can truly say that the best relationship advice ever comes from SYMians.

Over the last 11 years I think I've grown up a bit. Finished a BSc in Physiology, a Master's in public policy, served in the Canadian army as a medic and as an infantry officer and gone through many a relationship during the interim.

Now I'm living in the UK with a lovely, beautiful and brilliant young lawyer who keeps me about as a kept man while I do some graduate work at the London School of Economics.
The waves came crashing in like blindness.
So I just stood and listened.

Nearly the same case here except that I started playing Fallout after the KOTOR series. :p
