The US has a *huge* percentage of population with Irish ancestry. They imported their church, their customs, their names, etc...all as the result of a potatoe blight. Or perhaps, even more accurately, all because of British oppression.

I'm part Irish too. What I meant was, those who really need to immigrate to America, where exploited by the own. Lot of the rich, move here. Why???

Yes, I suppose once you assume that the fact the blight could have such effect was really because the lower classes were under the oppressive heal of the British and high ranking British sympathizers of Irish decent. Really, if a crop failed in any other western country, no one would starve to death...

Right, you can look at the same way the British, and what they tried to do to Scotland, lets breed em until they are British. (No offence to anyone.)

Yea, they pretty much pulled the same stunt with the Scottish...I am not sure you could say they ended up better or worse than the Irish. [btw I am part English..no flames please]

Actually, I think that the Scots. faired better than the Irish. You look at Ireland now. The British still control Northern Ireland, commonwealth like Canada.

You think that's bad. (Scot., Irish, and Italian on one side German, Austrian/Hungarian(depended after which war), and Dutch on the other.)

This was in a newspaper the Nation on 7 March 1846 and I found in a book The Famine Decade.

It is easier to understand the situation than read the whole book about the Famine, really...

I don't have enough knowledge to give any opinion for this, I'm afraid. And Northern Ireland is not a subject I take lightly and I feel in need to know about the region before say something.

In Japan, we don't learn much about Ireland, both north and south of the boarder. For some reason, though, Northern Ireland touched my heart since I came to this country. I spent all night watching the negotiation going through to reach the Good Friday agreement. One of my ambition is to write a book about the Northern Ireland and the Troubles for Japanese people.

Good essay on the famine if you are interested. Northern Ireland is a touchy subject. More oppression...but the use of such indescrimant violence can't be excused.

BTW My ancestors were from the south, and emmigrated before the famine.
