Query about BoTB + website

Post by Xandax »

Firstly.

If it has smelt like burning, it is because I've been thinking :

I think we need to protect some information on our site with passwords, and am currently messing around with a java-appelt password checker (no, I've not programmed it myself (yet :) )).
The reason is so ei. a rivial guild can't see our member stats etc.
My question is, how much (if any) information needs to be protected.

I myself have the idea of starting out with memberlist data wich would include the "wing" lists and the total membershiplist.
If these are protected nobody can see our names and stats. What do you guys say?

If people are interested in how it might look: Password
the password is guest and guest :)

Gurading these information would also go better in terms of our "secret guild idea"

Secondly:
Seeing as our numbers have increased to 46 at present, I think we maybe need to set a (temporary?) limit on number of members we can hold.
I know this goes somewhat against the idea behind the blades, but if we grow to big, we might not be able to game in another world, ei. Argyle.
But seeing as we actually don't know how many are "serious" roleplayers and how many are idle, it will be hard to enforce a limit at this time, I just think we need to adress this before size becomes a problem.

Otherwise we should make the guild in a way where everybody plays where they want, and then mark characters with where they are.
(ei. official vault character, no world; Argyle character; other world character)

I'd personally like the last - but don't think it will work decently, so I'm at this point leaning mostly towards a limit of numbers - ei. 50 members)

Gimme feedback :)

As you know from our e-mail discussions I like the idea. :) I agree that a limit is not like us but can we really expect Argyle to let 1/4 of the members in one guild? I think that possibly might be a problem, I hope more people join that are other guilds or whatever. I imagine that Sin and The Unholies (together) would be similar sized to us so it might be fair. :)

Why should it be fair?
And why don't we ask them?

OMG! Craig!

Not only is that a flawless post in grammatical sense, it also makes an excellent point with which I totally agree!

Password is a good idea, and a limit may not exactly be necessary, as I doubt all 46 members will be on at the same time.

However at the start it could be enforced, as TAT will be focused on building the large cities first. And having 25+ BotB members in a city and 5-6 non BotB members isn't really fun for us or fair on them.

Well it seems that I've just contradicted myself. I shall therefore remain neutral on the subject of setting a limit.

This is one of my main concers.
We currently have an acceptance from TAT, but they don't know how many players each city, server, dm can support, and of course they don't know how many wants to play on Argyle.
Currently it is hard coded that a server can hold 64 people, and even though we are not online all of us at the same time, I can easily see this guild reach 100+ members before NwN even hits the stores - and then I think we are becoming to big to ensure that we can play together.

Here's a possible solution

Why not have factions in different regions. It will spread our numbers out, and keep our headquarters(guild house)located in a major city.

However it doesn't solve the problem of BotB becoming too large for Argyle.

Nope it doesn't.
Argyle currently have 150 members registred at their boards. Let's say all our members have registred (I don't think they have) then we are 1/3 of that number.
We are getting to the point where we IMO is becoming to big for Argyle.

Of course this could change as we get further down the road towards release.

Well then, as much as I am disappointed by the fact that a limit may be placed.

Realistically there doesn't seem to be any other alternative. And the longer it takes NWN to be released, the larger BotB will become.

I don't really see the problem... So what if we're bigger than all the other player guilds together? It's not as if we'll make up the better part of Argyle's population. There are still NPCs.

It's not as if we're supposed to start PvP-ing the moment Argyle "airs". I doubt very much we'll come into contact with other PC guilds before we've officially established the Blades (at level 6 or so).

I don't understand this "fairness" concept either. Argyle is a realistic place, and there's no such concept in a "real" PnP world either. If you're in a lesser guild, you better walk softly or make powerful friends.

You don't have the "right" to mess with the Blades simply because you're in a different PC guild. You have to earn that "right" by gathering enough power to take on the Blades' superior numbers.

If we take up 1/3 of the population which may seem possible. Imagine every party you come across is a part of BotB. This is where the "fairness" thing may apply.

As Xandax pointed out, Argyle currently has around 150 members, and 46 of those are BotB members.

Well i agree if we make 1/3 of the population already we should try to hook up with other sites as well.
Say other worlds that are being built.
Then you have say a group for Argyle or the Harbor, and some for the other worlds.
And when someone wants to switch worlds well err... i don't know! :D

The good thing about our guild is that we don't have a specific agenda so that having a large guild won't become a problem in terms of game balance. We don't have a specific alignment and we're not looking to fight wars with other guilds. Having a large guild like ours should be good for Argyle because it ensures that it won't be all PvP. I mean what's wrong with having a majority of the population being on good terms with each other? :D

We're not "1/3 of the population", we're 1/3 of the player-run population. There should be NPCs out there, I hope. ;)

There should also be NPC adventuring parties out there... I hope.

I expect that the number of Argyle members will grow rapidly after the game launches, while the Blades won't get too many more people even now.

And what happens when other Argyllians realize that the Blades is just the place to be if you're not in a guild already? I mean, who doesn't want to belong to a cool guild like ours? :D

Will we allow outsiders to join after Argyle starts?

Firstly: agree :)

Secondly: agree :D

it would be a good idea to let members log in. it will also give us (mostly you Xan since you are the one running the web-show :) ) the possibility to show info or updates on the net instead of sending 46 posts. and of course hideing vital info from our "foes".

putting a limit is also gonna be a good idea. 46 is a lot but I am sure that not all will be active when we come to the BIG DAY. You could change the "submit character" to "become a member" or "apply for membership" this way we could see that there are some that wants to become a member and we could then see or discuss if there was enough space.
Just IMHO

Keep up the good work Xan ;)

Regarding password:
I've added it to the site as I'd though it might look.
Check out the website, and see that the initial navigating page has no acces to any member data - only through the log-in does this become avaiable.
It was the most simple way to do it presently.

Check it out
Password is still guest, guest.

EDIT: I've also tried a new font on 2 pages (welcome, and one about us) - check it out to see if you like it (if you can view it :D ) and if so, how much you think should/could be in this new font.

I don't really think there needs to be a cap on the numbers of players we accept. I mean, how many people are actively participating here on the forum on a regular basis. We'll probably have a number of people who contribute in a limited manner and many players who are regulars and contribute more. No problem.

Also, on that same note, I still don't think it matters if BotB is such a high percentage of players. If you've ever played PnP, your party is 100% of the player population. It's still a blast! Just cuz we make up a higher percentage of the population doesn't mean we'll have no villans in the world. They'll be DM run stories and DM controlled NPCs and villans. That's fine by me. I doubt our adventures will have many other players in them. It's still a big world and there's plenty for us to do. Just IMHO. :)

yes it would be fun to adventure in a party of fighters
and not detect traps
and having to wait for a mage's protection spells to wear off
and what about the healing
and if one of us gets killed where's the cleric
and if they all use long swords and they find a blackrazor +20

we could have "pre-made partys" (like me,xyx, nippy, thorin) and each got 2-3 days a week to play.

the "pre-made parys" should:
1) be in the same timezone.
2) have at least members from 4 wings

Did I detect a little irony, necro?

I think that there is no need to split it up it will all come naturally.
