Dreams are what I think about doing during the day manifested into a semi-"real" world designed just for me, where whatever I want to do I can do. Dreams may not be real, but they are what they are and that is just our own special way of coming up with a way for our thoughts to become reality.

I like to dream of a pretty white horse, and want to become friends with everybody... even that stupid art teacher... :D :D :D (this was directed towards Sailor Saturn)

Like Der' I dream in vivid color and touch/taste/sound. I tend to dream every day, perhaps because I get eight to nine hours of sleep a night ;)

I think dreams tell you something. We can say it is a mystical connection to another world..but I think it just plain tells you about yourself, what you fear and what your subconscious thinks of yourself...

I always dream I am the same person, different manifestations of me. I always have powers, can fly, can fight, can survive anywhere (don't get me started on my underwater adventures) ;) and have a psychic 'connection' with the world around me. Why? I don't know. Nor do I know why I'm always on different manifestations of the same quest, usually to save the world from 'the others' and to protect people. That is always big in my dreams. I know *I* can take it, but others I must lead to safe and hidden locations and protect.
Then there are of course 'the others', the 'people' who are sent to 'capture' me for scientific or other foul purposes. I flee, fly away, fight or seduce my way out of their clutches night after night.

Sometimes in my dreams I find others like me, others who have that connection, and then things get fun :)

Well, those are the constants of my dreams :) Sometimes I'm not protecting people, sometimes kittens or bunnies ;) Those are the hardest, picking up hundreds of baby bunnies and carrying them into the house so hawks don't get them is a tedious project...

Maybe this means I'm crazy :)

I dreamt once I was at work, working. Then I woke up and I had to go to work! It feels like you just worked 2 days in a row...

rob-hin,

I usually call in the next morning when that happens. OMG, it is the worst night of sleep you can imagine. I'll wake up and resume work once i get back to sleep. Anyway, after nights like those, the next day is a national holiday for me. Sucks when it happens on a friday or saturday night though. D'oh! I worked on the weekend.

I've always thought of dreams as the brain coming to life while the body is shut down. A lack of conscious thought allows the meddlesome brain to do whatever the hell it wants which is kind of cool because anything's possible.

Most nights, I don't know if I dream and if I do, I don't remember them. Some nights, I know I dreamt, but as soon as I wake up, poof it's gone like a twisted Samuel Taylor Coleridge Kubla Khan type thing. For the first few seconds I'm awake, I know I dreamt hard, but as soon as brush my teeth I can't remember a thing.

And then, there are the nights I dream very hard and remember the works. Now, that's cool.

One topic it doesn't seem like has been covered here are recurring dreams. A lot of people will say that recurring dreams are a load of dung. Speaking from experience and having been through the process, it can happen. What the consensus around here on recurring dreams?

I've never bought the idea that dreams are just random nerve firings, with no meaning. Does our Ego always have to run the show? It is, perhaps, the only time when other less verbal areas of our brains get to communicate with the conscious part of our brains. When I was working on my last novel, I would often dream about the characters--it felt as though my subconscious was subliminally working out dilemmas that my conscious brain had no time for. I have heard that from other writers, too. I've also heard of scientists coming up with the solution for a problem in a dream. Didn't Watson or Crick's discovery that DNA was a double helix come from an image of a double helix presented to one of them in a dream?

Last night, I dreamed about this Beatle's song (after falling asleep watching a show on the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle), but in a way, this song really describes what dreams do:

Fixing A Hole
(John Lennon, Paul McCartney)

I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in
And stops my mind from wandering
Where will it go?

I'm filling the cracks that ran through the door
And kept my mind from wandering
Where will it go?

And it really doesn't matter if
I'm wrong I'm right
Where I belong I'm right
Where I belong
See the people standing there who disagree and never win
And wonder why they don't get in my door

I'm painting my room in the colourful way
And when my mind is wandering
There I will go

Hey, hey, hey, hey

And it really doesn't matter if
I'm wrong I'm right
Where I belong I'm right
Where I belong
Silly people run around they worry me
And never ask me why they don't get past my door

I'm taking the time for a number of things
That weren't important yesterday
And I still go

I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in
And stops my mind from wandering
Where it will go?
Where it will go?

I'm fixing a hole where the rain gets in
And stops my mind from wandering (fade out)

I had to recent dreams that REALLY freaked me.
1) I am on a train with a leach on my left hand as the train goes on it gets larger untill we are chased down the outside of the train(we as in a group and an old person who told me not to try and take of the leach). some one throws a rag and (as the train is like 200Mph)it Zooms(as it seems) alon the train and crashes into the C0ckpit of the train, then we "Arrive"(or appear) at a farm and i have a deja vu typ feeling i've been here b4 but i don't know if i have, and then when i look at my right hand there is a maggot in my skin and the old man says it is good, and as i scratch it it get larger. :(
2)Im in this football pitch(english and not large) i proform a Backflip with the foot ball between my feet, then im in a hall i go out side and on a digger is Jesus (: eek: )and i complain to him that the people aren't alowed to Play foot ball and he accepts, then im walking down a path and some Racing cars come along the (foot)path and then i find a wallet and then im in my bed withe wallet and take out The harry potter book 5 (: eek:  ) and i read bit but it's sandwich between the pages of a history bookAnd also there is to Credit(or the other "Kind") cards in the Notes section.

Those are the dreams

We'll see about the consensus here at SYM, the consensus in psychology/sleep research is that recurrent dreams are quite common.

wow sleep!!! not to go off subject but you're on the brink of 8k posts. not many can make that claim.

I was not aware of M21 as a motorway, which translates to highway and/or interstate, in my area, I'm guessing.

I guess I should now post some of my own personal dream experiences.

I don't know about most other people, but my dreams are always affected by what I want to see and what I want others to see. Thus, at times, I have been able to have the same dream in the same night with two other people. I have also had dreams where I have seen friends whom I had not met until recently (and could not possibly have met... I have a friend who just came down here from Maine and I had never seen him in my life, but about a year ago I found in an old 'Dream-Journal' entry that I had had a dream about this person, with the same name and statistics, however looking a bit younger.) I have also found that my dreams are easily influenced by music. For example, if I let the Uranus and Neptune Henshin theme play on my computer, I will probably see somebody transform into a Sailor Senshi in my dream. I was karaoke-ing Ai wa Ryuusei a few nights ago in my dream. Finally, sometimes the song plays itself out in front of me: In one dream Alchemy of Love was played out in front of me, as a very cool representation of two hands in one shaping pure alchemy shaped like a heart. (It was a gold heart.) Very strange indeed.

In fact, one time I left a Weird Al song playing on my computer, fell asleep, and Santa blew up the north pole... Yipe!

Anyways, sometimes if I play songs in foreign languages, I will end up speaking the lyrics of that song in the native language to somebody else. I also will know all the lyrics to them, despite their ethnicity (Who else can sing Hungarian, Danish, Cantonese, Japanese, Spanish, Korean, English, and German without some outside influence?). Dreams have a mysterious effect on my mind, too. By selecting a certain pattern of songs and putting it into a looping playlist on my computer, I can arrange the events in my dreams (Like the one where time was messed up, the song playing had to do with time). And lastly, the songs I play overnight do not get stuck in my head during the day, but I get the same satisfaction of listening to the song overnight as I do while doing my homework. I also learn the lyrics faster.

Music is a very interesting factor to determine my dream. If I play a Sailor Venus song, most likely somewhere along the line in my dream I will see Sailor Venus. (A few nights ago, she was singing Route Venus, even though it wasn't on the playlist. However, Setsunakute Ii was, and that is a Venus song) I can also be whoever I want to be. I have been able to put myself into positions where I was a member of a musical group, or an anime character (Usually Tenchi). I guess the funniest one was when I was in my dream going to the bathroom, walked out onto this stage, and then sang Tokyo Girl in front of millions of people, but it wasn't my voice, but it was coming out of my mouth.

Also, if I do a BGM-related playlist, I can have whole movie sequences, such as one where a bomb exploded in a nearby city and I had to go beat up some terrorists (I sound like corny action star now!) or the one where I got shot in the head, a Hotaru-related BGM played and then Hotaru appeared and healed it. Qutie strange.

OK I've typed quite enough now. Later all :D

You're on the right track, M21 is an open cluster, Andromeda is M31, I believe. Perhaps I should change it, Andromeda sounds nicer :D

I definitely ought to change it - is there a motorway called M31? If so, from where does it go, where?

Hi, CE, nice to see you around.

Just wondered- does what you do when dreaming have any significance? I have been told that I talk a lot, and kick like a football player. My flatmate has woken up screaming from her dreams, and found herself running across the room trying to get out- not the most reassuring thing for me to hear in the early hours!

Any takes on either of these?

Hi vixen, very nice to see you around too :) Hope you collected heaps of great experiences on your journey and that your studying is going well :)

I don't think that talking, walking or moving a lot in your sleep has any significance, there are individual differences but they don't seem have any functional meaning as far as we know. As long as you at your flatmate don't hurt yourselfs or others in your sleep, it's probably only an amusement ;) One of my friends once knocked down a large piedestal with a flower pot ot, because he dreamt he was hunted by a large snake :D
