Amoen replaces Imoen untill you rescue her, and returns to the party when there are no NPC quests left. Nalia is a back up when Jaheira leaves for the first part of the harper quest.
Minsc, Korgan, Jan Jansen and Haerdalis might be useful, but are so bloody anoying...
BTW Franke, it is no problem to keep Keldorn in the party and still be a nice guy. Check his quest info at this site
