When to Rest?
I know this sounds fairly weird - but how much rest should one have? I mean, I tend to rest as little as possible (when everyone's HPs are v.low and spells near to fully used) because I always got the impression that time was important in BGII. But now I'm not too sure. It seems that you can rest excessively and delay as much you want and still maintain all of your quests and such.
Also, where can you not rest? and are there any rest-enhancing items - e.g. Sleeping Bag of Sweet Dreaming or Pillow of Night?

Well first off for most of the game take your time there is no rush. The place with a strict time limit is (Spoiler The Drow city Urst ? in the Underdark. )
I mostly rest when my tanks get tired. I have yet to run out of spells. I use mage heavy parties.
There are no items to enhance rest, but there are spells which can help. SpoilerLimited Wish can give back some spells and Wish need TOB can rest the party.

Even those quests with timelimits generally have very generous (like 3 days game time to do one small dungeon) ones so there is plenty of time to rest if you wanted. On the other hand I think not resting makes for better roleplay and more fun. Most of the time it just seems silly that in the middle of a dungeon or during some quest you'd lie down and have a nap. I generally rest when all my characters are fatigued from lack of sleep. Hey its a hard life =).
There are very few time sensitive quests - when you get one you will be warned.

If you don't like reloading, it might be best to rest as much as you want. Personally, I'd rather camp out after every battle than reload once because my character got killed. As everyone's said, you can rest whenever you want for the most part. Despite what most of the quest-givers and NPCs say, you're usually in no rush to get things done; so, I wouldn't worry about it.
You may want to rest as you wish in the first time through the game, then go for a more challenging and fun game and do as

Resting is part of real life, so from a role playing point of view you should rest at least once every two days (you are not going to fight well in real life if you don't sleep!).
I usually sleep in the Inns, in the open ground and sometimes (if my group is fatigued) in the dungeons, but only if I cleared it (before going to another level or separate part) and/or if there are rooms you can close yourself in (remember the LoR in Moria!).

Fatigue
I was always resting when fatigued ... or when I really had a long day and was planning on a major entry into some fight ... and needed spells of a specific kind.
So in the beginning I was packing in like real long hours .. now suddenly .. like since spellhold ... My characters have lost all there stamina ... they are fatigued and whiny after every small fight .. it's eeeky to try sleeping in the Spellhold dungeon ... I had to find safe places where I could close the doors to sleep .. BOY did they need to sleep off!!!! And then in the Illithid tunnel .. can you imagine my team wanted to sleep after every fight!!! Eeesh .. what's up team?? You wanna be brainwashed for life??
But there was no way way out ... My first time around in Illithid tunnel Phaera had the guts to walk in and tell me I was exposed - I was sleeping to recoup (once too many I think)!!!
Boy that girl has steel to enter the tunnel of the very same that I saved her from a while ago!!
So next time I attempted only when Mother Ardulace gave me permission to hunt out the brain/blood/eye-stalk .. BTW I had to note I did not find the Illithid brain or blood!! I found the other two tho' .. I was mainly doing this flayer tunnel for treasure and xps.
In Ust Natha I ignored my battered party and dragged them around many a times .. They are really getting too cushy!!
Does anybody know what factors affect how fast the team fatigues??
- weight they carry around?
- how many potions they drink and overperform?
- how much hasting there is?
There is no way out from not carrying all my stuff around ... I wish they would have another bag of Holding!! I hate leaving stuff and having to come back for it - and you can't even do that in Ust natha.

The spell (lesser) restoration will fatigue the caster or if you 'buy' it at a temple it will fatigue the recipient.
Don't know if encumberance plays a part in fatigue but constitution does; the lower any character's CON, the more likely they are to flake out. Third level mage spell haste can be cast on a character once in a day without any ill effects...any more though and its bed time. Note you can haste on any summons as many times as you like as long as you're careful and step back just after casting in order for the caster to miss being hasted - the spell has quite a low range. Ok, thanks for the replies, Glod, smass, Littiz and others. I agree that it is more RPG-like if you rest (at the most) once each day and not in cold, dank dungeons but in inns. I guess if you have a good supply of magical power (like healing potions), then you don't really need to rest a lot.
I remember my first adventure as a DM in D&D First Edition (we used little figurines on top of grids with squares - this was very hack n slash style of play), and the party rested before entering every room. Now, however, they fear rest in dungeons like the plague because they know my 'pets' are well capable of sneaking past their one-man guard and in Lehtinan-speak '*uhmmm* doing things to them'.
So, yeah, next time Viconia starts complaining about rest, I'll slap her.

Thanks island007, that's what I thought. I haven't gotten it once in ToB and I imported my character from BG1 to SoA to ToB and my wisdom is plenty high. Silly maunuals. I don't think wisdom affects your options just the outcome.
@archeron: fatigue reduces several things like two-hit-role, ac and there is something else. It's the same as the after effects of Berserk, look in the manual to make sure. In BG 1 you eventually pass out. I don't see why that wouldn't happen here.

.in the spellhold dungeon there's a device that can haste the party, leaving all fatigue when haste expires.
Using it over and over, I noticed that the penalties were stacking...
I had something like -10 to thac0 and so
