Moreover, anti-smoking efforts aimed at youth have been remarkably effective by building on a campaign to erode the social acceptability of tobacco. Should we undermine those efforts by promoting smoked marijuana as though it were a medicine?
As Ode has stated, regular cigarettes are far more damaging than pot. Furthermore, marijuana
has medicinal use, so the use of the author of the phrase "as though" is really out of place. E.g. morfine is much stronger a painkiller than marijuana and has to be administered in stronger dosages in the long run, which can shorten a patient's life span. If scientists can find a way to replace it with marijuana, I say: by all means, let them.
Giving marijuana dealers a free pass is a terrible idea. In fact, thanks in part to excellent reporting in The Post, District residents are increasingly aware that marijuana dealers are dangerous criminals. The recent life-without-parole convictions of leaders of Washington's K Street Crew are only the latest evidence of this.
So the K Street Crew is one example. It's not because criminals have dealt marijuana (and I'm sure they have dealt far more dangerous stuff too, not just marijuana), that all marijuana dealers are criminals. It's not because a serious hash addict used to smoke pot, that all potheads become hash addicts.
The THC in marijuana attaches itself to receptors in the hippocampal region of the brain, weakening short-term memory and interfering with the mechanisms that form long-term memory
Alcohol kills brain cells. I'm sure an argument like "alcohol is just as
bad and it's legal" is no real positive contribution to the pro-cannabis lobbying, but still... America is a democracy. Why allow people to buy booze and not marijuana? As with all things, too much can never be good, but why not let people make up their own minds about it?
