"Killing dragons is sort of like learning how to whistle; it seems impossible until you finally get a knack for it, and then it's the easiest thing in the world."
I disagree. When leaving an area it could be very useful. Although with taverns it does get a bit annoying.
It's potentially useful as a backup save, provided you don't already keep your own secondary save slot. Which, of course, I do. Cutting out AutoSaves would shave off more than half the time it takes to load party-required areas--load times are quite speedy on my 'puter, but the save games take four or five seconds a piece, particularly later in the game when it stores more and more information. I'd really like to be rid of them.

Some of us, present company included, have been playing BG2 for over a year now and, barring the occasional computer crash, revert to the autosaved game only after sudden death or petrification. I'm with with Trinal on this - the game should kick in an autosave every 45 minutes or so. I getting tired of staring at that flaming skull.
I think I'll mosey on down to the Black Isle and Bioware boards and find out what Dave Gaider and Kevin D. have to say about this.
