For Dottie, in honour of your lovely new avatar

Smashing Pumpkins

"Snail"

All your seven dreams
Look close, son, and you'll believe
As your things come undone
See you are the only one

Flower, seize the hour I did
I wait Waiting, waiting for your wake
I'll wait

When you wake up you're all weak
Throwing your life away
Someday, sorry coming home
Sorry snail
What you wait for

Flower, the pain will wash away, away
When the sun shines
Climbs through your window into your bed

When you wake up you're all weak
Throwing your life away
Someday, sorry coming home
Sorry snail
Down in my heart

Flower save the hours
Flower away

What you wait for
Flower chase the sunshine
Flower chase the sunshine
Flower

I'm loving this band, can't wait to see them live.

Heavy Metal Drummer - Wilco

I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands
I used to go see on the landing in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love

Shiny, shiny pants and bleach-blond hair
A double kick drum by the river in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
Another and another
She fell in love

I miss the innocence I've known
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned

Unlock my body and move myself to dance
Moving warm liquid, flowing blowing glass
Classical music blasting masks the ringing in my ears

I sincerely miss those heavy metal bands
I used to go see on the landing in the summer
She fell in love with the drummer
She fell in love with another
She fell in love

I miss the innocence I've known
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned
I miss the innocence I've known
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned
Playing KISS covers, beautiful and stoned

CE, wow, Emiliana on the lyrics thread, I am shocked :) So my prattling wasn't wasted after all :D Another reccommendation is Beth Gibbons most recent album Out of Season, it is absolutely fantastic. Here are some lyrics

Mystery

God knows how I adore life
When the wind turns on the shores lies another day
I cannot ask for more

When the time bell blows my heart
And I have scored a better day
Well nobody made this war of mine

And the moments that I enjoy
A place of love and mystery
I'll be there anytime

Oh mysteries of love
Where war is no more
I'll be there anytime

When the time bell blows my heart
And I have scored a better day
Well nobody made this war of mine

And the moments that I enjoy
A place of love and mystery
I'll be there anytime

Mysteries of love
Where war is no more
I'll be there anytime
I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.

I was a little surprised to see you post lyrics to an 80's band. :D
Hey, the lyrics are good. Their delivery is typically 80's though...the cover rules. Yes, I have heard both. It's very different, but not by any means the most different cover ever - that has to belong to Tori Amos's version of Smells Like Teen Spirit :D

A truly great song that I think was covered amazingly (by the Foo Fighters this time), but whose original is fully worthy:

Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street

Winding your way down on Baker Street
Light in your head and dead on your feet
Well another crazy day, you’ll drink the night away
And forget about everything.

This city desert makes you feel so cold
It’s got so many people but it’s got no soul
And it’s taken you so long to find out you were wrong
When you thought it held everything.

You used to think that it was so easy,
You used to say that it was so easy
But you’re tryin’, you’re tryin’ now.
Another year and then you’d be happy
Just one more year and then you’d be happy
But you’re cryin’, you’re cryin’ now.

Way down the street there’s a light in his place
He opens the door, he’s got that look on his face
And he asks you where you’ve been, you tell him who you’ve seen
And you talk about anything.

He’s got this dream about buyin’ some land
He’s gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he’ll settle down, it’s a quiet little town
And forget about everything.

But you know he’ll always keep movin’
You know he’s never gonna stop movin’
Cause he’s rollin’, he’s the rollin’ stone.
And when you wake up it’s a new morning
The sun is shining, it’s a new morning
But you’re going, you’re going home.

*snurfle*
*goes off to listen again*

Cut Your Ribbon - Sparta

Wake Up
Can You Hear Me?
You're so clever
Did you find me?
In the backroom
In your closet
In your suitcase
There's no running
I will find you
Like the glacier
Cuts the seabed, leaving Canyons
In your cheekbones
Passing through you
In the shadows, scenes undo you

Cut Your Ribbon
As it follows you
Everything, Everything
How can you sleep at night
As it falls apart
Everything, everything
How can you sleep at night

Face it
Can you hear it?
Violation, You'll remember
It's all harmless
Incidental, disengaging
These thoughts break you
Concious, vicious
It has found you
Monovision, synapse fails you
Frequent syndrome
Stings and burns through
Monovision, then dillutes you

Cut Your Ribbon
As it follows you
Everything, Everything
How can you sleep at night
As it falls apart
Everything, everything
How can you sleep at night

Can you escape these motives
Can you escape these motives
Can you escape these motives

Cut Your Ribbon
As it follows you
Everything, Everything
How can you sleep at night
As it falls apart
Everything, everything
How can you sleep at night

No praise before the lovely Polly Jean that is for sure ;) Wilco are okay, but no Polly Jean Harvey.

Since my guitar playing is progressing fairly well, here is the first song I learned:

There is a house in New Orleans,
They call the Rising Sun
And It's been the ruin of many a poor boy
And God, I know, I'm one

My mother was a tailor
She sewed my new blue jeans
My father was a gambling man
Down in New Orleans

And the only things a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and a trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's all a-drunk

I've got one foot on the platform
The other foot on the train
I'm going back to New Orleans
To wear the ball and chain

So mothers, tell your children
Not to do what I have done
Spend your life in sin and misery
In the house of the Rising Sun

I haven't quite got it licked but I have at least got my foot in the door
I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.

At the moment I am only chosing songs which I actually like, so no Oasis songs will be strummed by me ;) Apparently they are very easy to learn though...I just have too many scruples!

I am currently trying to learn Otis Redding's Dock of the Bay, more lyrics

Dock of the Bay:

Sittin' in the mornin sun
I'll be sittin when the evenin' come
Watchin the ships roll in
Then I watch 'em roll away again

I'm sittin on the dock of the bay
watchin the time roll away
I'm just sittin on the dock of the bay

Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the Frisco Bay
Cause I had nothin to live for
And look Like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just goin to sit on the dock of the bay
Watchin the time roll away
I'm sittin on the dock the dock of the bay wastin time

Look pop nothin's goin to change
everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same

Yes

Sittin' here restin my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
2000 miles I roam
Just to make this dock my home

Now I'm jus' gon' sit at the dock of a bay
watchin the time roll away
Sittin On the dock of the bay wastin' time

Great! ;)

How do you think the Gallaghers do it? :p

Ooh, another excellent song. Love that one.

So as to not make this thread spam, I will now post the lyrics to the first ever song I learned on the cello.

Three blind mice,
Three blind mice,
See how they run!
See how they run!
They all ran after the farmer's wife,
Who cut off their tails with a carving knife.
Did ever you see such a thing in your life,
As three blind mice.

It is a classic, probably the best soul song of that generation.

Heh, same song I learned first on the cello too, what a strange coincidence.

Here are the lyrics to the Kinks song Everybody's Gonna be happy:

And I know, and I know,
And I know that ev'rybody,
And I know that ev'rybody be happy,
As happy as you and me.
'Cause I know, I know.

Come on baby let me tell you
All the things I wanna say
Come on baby let me tell you
All the things I wanna say, and

Ev'rybody's gonna be happy,
Which means you and me, my love
Ev'rybody's gonna be happy,
Which means you and me, my love

And I know, and I know,
And when I see ya walking down the street
Well it makes me happy to see you walkin'
It makes my life complete
'Cause I know, I know.

Come on baby let me tell you
All the things I wanna say
Come on baby let me tell you
All the things I wanna say, and

Ev'rybody's gonna be happy,
Which means you and me, my love
Ev'rybody's gonna be happy,
Which means you and me, my love

And I know, and I know,
And I know that you and me,
And I know that you and me be happy,
As happy as we can be.
'Cause I know, I know.

Come on baby let me tell you
All the things I wanna say
Come on baby let me tell you
All the things I wanna say, and

Ev'rybody's gonna be happy,
Which means you and me, my love
Ev'rybody's gonna be happy,
Which means you and me, my love

Ev'rybody's gonna be happy,
Which means you and me, my love
Ev'rybody's gonna be happy,
Which means you and me, my love

And I know, and I know,
And I know, and I know,
And I know...
I'd have to get drunk every night and talk about virility...And those Pink elephants I'd see.

I think it may well have been the last song I ever learned on the cello too...we don't have the best of relationships, me and musical talent. Anyway, it's a starter song because they don't trust you with a bow and you can pluck it. ;)

Heh, what other instruments have you tried? There is bound to be one for you

Well I was never that fantastic with the cello because I was kind of lazy, I am however much more behind my guitar for it is on my own time. I got grade one...but that was about it.

Yeah, right...my musical talent stops at singing, and depending on who you ask, maybe a bit before :D I'm sure if I worked really hard at it I could be not too shabby, but I'm way too lazy...motivation is not a strong point for me :p

Singing is in the ear of the beholder, who would have thought Liam Gallagher could craft a career? I guess the trick would be to find an instrument that inspires you and play that, you might also join a band; great inspriation apparently.

Kid, well I used to, I wasn't exactly very good, I got to grade 1 (as I said earlier) if I perhaps had applied myself then I would have done more but it came at an awkward part of my life so it kind of took a back burner.

Who's Tori Amos?

Get the Balance Right -Depeche Mode

There's more besides joyrides
Little house in the countryside
Understand, learn to demand,
Compromise, sometimes lie

Get the Balance right, get the balance right

Be responsible, respectable,
Stable but gullible
Concerned and caring, help the helpless
But always remain ultimately selfish

Get the balance right, get the balance right

You think you've got a hold of it all
You haven't got a hold at all
When you reach the top, get ready to drop
Prepare yourself for the fall, you're gonna fall
It's almost predictable

Don't take this way, don't take that way
Straight down the middle until next Thursday
Push to the left, back to the right
Twist and turn 'til you've got it right

Get the balance right
“Caw, Caw!” The call of the wild calls you. Are you listening? Do you dare challenge their power? Do you dare invade? Nature will always triumph in the end.

ONE FINE DAY - "The Offspring"

If I had a perfect day
I would have it start this way
Open up the fridge and have a tall boy
Yeah

Then I'd meet up with my friends
Head out to the game again
We don't even really care who wins
Now excitement seems to grow
When we're hangin' with the bro's
When we're chillin' and we pound a case of Stroh's
Now the game is cool to see
You can "High 5" on TV
Count the riot on the one two three
Operation is in sight
And the field is open wide
When you break it then you know you're still alive
If the cops don't make you pay
And you make your getaway
Then you know
That's one fine day

On that day before we're through
We could torch a car or two
Then have ourselves another tall boy
Yeah

Water hoses and batons
That's the real game that's on
I don't really give a s**t who wins
Now excitement seems to grow
When we're hangin' with the bro's
When we're chillin' and we pound a case of Stroh's
Now the game is cool to see
You can "High 5" on TV
Count the riot on the one two three
Operation is in sight
And the field is open wide
When you break it then you know you're still alive
If the cops don't make you pay
And you make your getaway
Then you know
That's one fine day

I believe it's my god-given right
To destroy everything in my sight
Cause it never gets dull, it never gets old
The only thing it gets is more bold
Drinkin', fightin', going to the game
In our world it's a way to stay sane
If you're asking me
To have it my way, I'd say that's
One fine day
"It's not whether you get knocked down, it's if you get back up."

Well you are progressive quite nicely aren't you. ;) Should learn a Beatles song, I bought a book with the all their songs, a bit expensive but worth it. Currently learning Yesterday, coming across nicely too

EDIT- Tori Amos web site

EDIT (yet again) - One for Sleep  :D

Fashion Rules! - Chicks On Speed

You fashion people in your camouflage wear
You think you're really quite up there
But the fashions you wear aren't so cool
You really should go back, you're old school

And martine hides behind our stripes
The t-shirts yeah! that's what she likes
Nicking off with logos at cartier
The grand mister d, or charly, some say

Fashion is for fashion people
It's hard to be cool if you don't follow these rules

Dress-up dummies for a little while
Crashed the crash party in real chicks style
Karl and his lens they like to watch
King of the thing, but we dont give ahhhhh...

Gucci's got the monopoly
Fifty handbags - thats victim's luxury
Voguefied in 01, enough of this fake, it's said and done

Fashion is for fashion people
It's hard to be cool if you don't follow these rules

Bless your dress, you're out of style
You're a brainwash victim for a while
Off with their heads is what we say
After Marie Antoinette it's the only way

You're a model and you walk the beat
They even told you what to eat
Bacteria inbred in fashion schools
Get out there now and break the rules

Fashion is for fashion people
It's hard to be cool if you don't follow these rules

" AM Radio " - Everclear

You can hear the music on the AM radio

The VCR and the DVD
There wasn't none of that crap back in 1970
We didn't know about a World Wide Web
It was a whole different game being played back when I was a kid

Wanna get down in a cool way
Picture yourself on a beautiful day
Big bell bottoms and groovy long hair
Just walkin' in style with a portable CD player
No, you would listen to the music on the AM radio
Yeah, you could hear the music on a AM radio

Flashback, '72
Another summer in the neighborhood
Hangin' out with nothing to do
Sometmes we'd go drivin' around
In my sister's Pinto
Cruisin' with the windows rolled down
We'd listen to the radio station
We were too damn cool to buy the eight track tapes
There wasn't any good time to want to be inside
My mama wanna watch that TV all goddamn night

I'd be in bed with the radio on
I would listen to it all night long
Just to hear my favorite song
You'd have to wait but you could hear it on the AM radio
Yeah, you could hear the music on a AM radio
I can still hear Mama say ?°Boy turn that radio down!?±

?°Aw, Mom. Not that show again! I don't wanna watch that show!
Can't we watch Good Times or Chico and the Man or something cool?
Turn it off!"

Things changed back in '75
We were all growing up on the in and the outside
We got in trouble with the police man
We got busted gettin' high in the back of my friend's van

I remember 1977
I started going to concerts and I saw the Led Zeppelin
I got a guitar on Christmas day
I dreamed that Jimmy Page would come from Santa Monica
and teach me to play
Teach me to play...

There isn't any place that I need to go
There isn't anything that I need to know
I did not learn from the radio

Yeah when things get stupid and I just don't know
Where to find my happy
I listen to my music on the AM radio
You can hear the music on a AM radio
You can hear the music on a AM radio

I like pop, I like soul, I like rock, but I never liked disco
I like pop, I like soul, I like rock, but I never liked disco
We like pop, we like soul, we like rock, but we never liked disco...

No I never liked disco...
