The Sports Bar
The Sports Bar
Yes, seemingly the topic I am most into: Sports.
You are welcome to talk about any sport in this thread, and discuss any news around the world regarding sports.
I have created this thread in light of today's action-packed F-1 race at Australia and the coming of a new baseball season, along with the upcoming NHL playoffs, March Madness, and NBA playoffs and a little later, the NFL draft.
I will kick off the thread with news of today's F-1 race at Australia.
Rubens Barrichello had started the race with a soar back, and wrecking early (lap 6) did not help the cause, he finished 20th. CART champion, Chistiano De Matta faired no better, spinning and finishing in 18th.
The middle part of the race featured a great duel between Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen. Until pit stops, it continued. Raikkonen was caught speeding on pit road, and Schumacher assumed the lead, but when they were fighting, Schumacher let a curb get the better of him, and a piece of body work flew off, so he had to pit again. Juan Puablo Montoya then assumed the lead, until he spun by himself on lap 48.
David Coulthard assumed the lead and won! Also on the podium was Montoya and Raikkonen. Schumacher finished 4th, his first absence from the podium in 19 races.
Next up: The Malaysian Grand Prix
Now onto another racing event: NASCAR's MBNA 500 from Atlanta
The race started very clean, and after 100 some laps of caution-free racing, many teams were relagated to 1 lap down. Green flag pitstops and loose handling cars was a catalyst for many teams finding themselves 1 or more laps down in the first 1/3 of the race.
But the high speeds of Atlanta (193 mph-310 km/h) took its toll on many engines. By the end of the race, there were 33 of 43 cars running, 8 of which were out because of engine problems. Jerry Nadeau and Brett Bodine both crashed in the race.
By race's end there were only 9 cars on the lead lap, and the dominant Bobby Labonte found himself behind Jeff Gordon with 15 laps to go in the 352 lap race. Bobby Labonte, on the frontstretch ran into the back of Gordon, turning him sideways enough so that Bobby could go above him, and pass. This was the race for the win, and it ended that way.
Bobby Labonte led Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, Elliott Sadler, Jimmy Spencer, Dave Blaney, Joe Nemechek and Ryan Newman to the line.
The top 5 in standings are:
#17-Matt Kenseth 618
#20-Tony Stewart 569
#15-Michael Waltrip 543
#48-Jimmie Johnson 519
#18-Bobby Labonte 510
Next up: Darlington 500
Photos for both races pending.
So you are now free to discuss either of the events I have posted or discuss any sport that interests you and the news around it.
I will update this thread with mostly Racing stuff from F-1, NASCAR, World Rally Cup, or CART, but I will also be interested in talking about Hockey playoffs, Baseball news, Football news, and I am also up to date on Basketball news, so during the week I may write about those things.
I feel a sports bar is very useable here, because I constantly see threads pop up based on different sports, so may aswell have a bar to talk about all the worlds of sports.

Simeon Rice re-signs with Buccs

TRADE OF THE DAY:
Going to Colorado: Brian Marchment, one of the dirtiest players in the league
Going to San Jose: A third-round and fifth-round pick in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft
NOTEWORTHY: Ron Francis now has the distinction of scoring 20 or more goals in a season 20 times in his career.

Dallas beat San Jose 3-0, which gives them 93 pts.
Ottawa beat Pittsburgh 4-2 (94 pts.)
It also should be noted that Colorado has a game in hand on Vancouver and Detroit has a game in hand over St. Louis. And Tampa Bay can catch Washington easily (two games in hand I think and only a win behind).

Anyone think that the Rangers will make the playoffs? They've been making a run at them as of late and still have a shot. They're only 4 points behind the Islanders but the Isle have one game in hand over the Rangers. So do they have a chance?

Broncos will look stupid for signing Plummer by the end of the season
Wash already looks stupid for losing Davis *Spurrier hates RB's, remember what happened to Emmitt when he came to Florida?* Candidate has speed, talent, and the knack for coughing up the football.
All in all, the Skins will make roster moves that will excite me, and mean nothing next season

I doubt it. NYI who are eighth have two games in hand on NYR and a four point lead to boot. In percent I'd say that NYR has maybe a 13% to make it. It depends on who NYI plays in the coming weeks and how well they play. If NYR plays close to potential and NYI sputters than look out.
But they have a better chance to make it than Nashville (West Conference 9th).

NYR and NYI schedules are equally tough,
The Islanders schedule includes games against (most notably): Vancouver, Ottawa, Jersey and one game against the Rangers.
Full schedule here:http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/main.asp?hu ... -islanders
The Ranges schedule includes (most notably): Jersey, Ottawa and Philly as well as one against NYI.

I'd like to see Minnesota get past the 1st round

Ah good...duscussion has taken off!
For the record: I hate NYR, MTL, and COL
Go BOSTON!
Davis is a very popular RB in the market right now, theres a reason for that. Davis is good. Lets hope Trung puts up the numbers we know hes capable of and doesnt shut down now that hes got the starting role.
Well Spurrier is one reason why WAS might not succeed this coming season...he didnt really pan out to a good coach the first season. But maybe Im judging him too much after one season...maybe when all is said and done he'll be good.
I hate the Rangers, and by being a pessimist, I think they will make it.Originally posted by Annatar

Really? I thought it was a relatively good move except for the amount of money he got...thats a big blow in the bank of DEN. Sometimes when a player gets transferred from a bad team to a good team, it really picks them up, and they show talent they havent shown before. And this kid is good when it comes to clutch time. This team is very young, and I think theyll grow together. They are a team to watch, IMO.Originally posted by Bloodstalker

@Ty....Marchment is known for going for knee to knee collisions. He's injured quite a few people. Not to mention that he faked being unconscious when a Canuck hit him. When a penalty was assessed he got up and skated just fine. That's just plain dirty.

I dont like the Lakers mainly because I still want the Celtics to have the record for most Championships!
But the Lakers are rebounding after a miserable start. You got to hand it to them. Kobe has been lighting up the scoreboard, and of course Shaq is Shaq.
But Id really like to see the Celtics return to power. Last year the Celtic Pride came back...now lets see what we can do for an encore.
EDIT-@Z Yeah...some players will go to a number of lengths to just win the game, dirty or not, aslong as its not against the rules. It happens...

I'd like to see Minnesota get past the 1st round
I'd say the Islanders have a much tougher schedule. They have to play quite a few Western teams (Can't gain points on their rivals and the western teams they play are pretty damn good). So I'd say the Rangers have a fair chance to catch the Isles..
In the first round of the West expect a lot of tough competition since the teams are so tightly packed. Only team that I think definitely won't get past the 1st round in the west is Edmonton.

Shaq Daddy Rules!
...the Lakers will get that no.10 for Phil "The Lord of the Rings" Jackson.
Speaking of Celtics, Red Auerbach's record of nine bling-blings is tied with The Guru.
There hasn't been a great dynamic duo since Jordan and Pippen. Enter Shaq and Kobe.
The Boy Wonder has carried the Lakers out of the funk and now it's Shaq's turn to steamroll LA to the playoffs.
