You are welcome to talk about any sport in this thread, and discuss any news around the world regarding sports.
I have created this thread in light of today's action-packed F-1 race at Australia and the coming of a new baseball season, along with the upcoming NHL playoffs, March Madness, and NBA playoffs and a little later, the NFL draft.
I will kick off the thread with news of today's F-1 race at Australia.
Rubens Barrichello had started the race with a soar back, and wrecking early (lap 6) did not help the cause, he finished 20th. CART champion, Chistiano De Matta faired no better, spinning and finishing in 18th.
The middle part of the race featured a great duel between Schumacher and Kimi Raikkonen. Until pit stops, it continued. Raikkonen was caught speeding on pit road, and Schumacher assumed the lead, but when they were fighting, Schumacher let a curb get the better of him, and a piece of body work flew off, so he had to pit again. Juan Puablo Montoya then assumed the lead, until he spun by himself on lap 48.
David Coulthard assumed the lead and won! Also on the podium was Montoya and Raikkonen. Schumacher finished 4th, his first absence from the podium in 19 races.
Next up: The Malaysian Grand Prix
Now onto another racing event: NASCAR's MBNA 500 from Atlanta
The race started very clean, and after 100 some laps of caution-free racing, many teams were relagated to 1 lap down. Green flag pitstops and loose handling cars was a catalyst for many teams finding themselves 1 or more laps down in the first 1/3 of the race.
But the high speeds of Atlanta (193 mph-310 km/h) took its toll on many engines. By the end of the race, there were 33 of 43 cars running, 8 of which were out because of engine problems. Jerry Nadeau and Brett Bodine both crashed in the race.
By race's end there were only 9 cars on the lead lap, and the dominant Bobby Labonte found himself behind Jeff Gordon with 15 laps to go in the 352 lap race. Bobby Labonte, on the frontstretch ran into the back of Gordon, turning him sideways enough so that Bobby could go above him, and pass. This was the race for the win, and it ended that way.
Bobby Labonte led Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt Jr, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, Elliott Sadler, Jimmy Spencer, Dave Blaney, Joe Nemechek and Ryan Newman to the line.
The top 5 in standings are:
#17-Matt Kenseth 618
#20-Tony Stewart 569
#15-Michael Waltrip 543
#48-Jimmie Johnson 519
#18-Bobby Labonte 510
Next up: Darlington 500
Photos for both races pending.
So you are now free to discuss either of the events I have posted or discuss any sport that interests you and the news around it.
I will update this thread with mostly Racing stuff from F-1, NASCAR, World Rally Cup, or CART, but I will also be interested in talking about Hockey playoffs, Baseball news, Football news, and I am also up to date on Basketball news, so during the week I may write about those things.
I feel a sports bar is very useable here, because I constantly see threads pop up based on different sports, so may aswell have a bar to talk about all the worlds of sports.
