I agree with Random here, and I think none is surprised when I say I love debating and discussing serious things. It all depends on what function you want SYM to fill - I never came here to escape anything, or primarily to be entertained. I honestly don't think an internet message board can be very funny, (regardless of how many Waverly's there are around) and it's much more difficult to get a joke through in written form, especially for all us who aren't native English speakers. No, what I like with SYM is the opportunity to discuss things, serious and less serious, with people from different cultures and people who hold opinions, values and ideas that you would never encounter in your everyday life.

Bar threads where you can have social conversations are nice, I really like that although I seldom have time for it nowadays, but to me personally, all those "Oh we SYM:ers spam so much and we are so mad"-threads holds little interest.

In fact, sometimes I don't post because I think I am the only one online and don't wanna be caufght playing with myself  Most of the time, if I see no names or activity, I leave pretty quick.

I suspect this is very likely...

*note to self: lurk less on invisible, post more* ;) Actually... since starting to work, I can only really post during evenings and weekends (and Fridays when I work from home)

ROFL! :D
Perhaps we should loosen up those SYM morals even more... and make it *okay* to engage in self-amusment... That's right.. just let loose and let it all hang out ...

I still blame you partially on the grounds that you haven't belly danced enough in the past few months. It was one of SYM's truly more inspiring features ;) :D

SYM??!! Dead??!! I hope not!

Sadly I don't have as much time to hang out here as i used to, but it'd be a shame to the internet as a whole if we all just gave up on this place. SYM isn't a message board, it's people talking about whatever is on their minds. If we say SYM is dead isn't that a way of saying we have nothing left to talk about?

Maybe we need a really big party thread. Or a bar. Or a party in a bar!
There are 10 types of people in the world - those who understand binary and those who don't.
I think I think, therefore I might be.

But, it depends how much you want - if you are not that interested in SYM, there is no legal contract...but if you want some more out of it, you can put a bit more in.

When you start to make some new threads and get involved more, SYM looks your direction, and you will enjoy it more :)

This I agree with very much. Of course we all have a tendency to start threads about topics we find interesting or in a style we like. If people want to spam more, start more spam threads! If you want SYM to be more entertaining and funny, you have to start entertain and be funny yourself I suppose, and others will follow.

Personally, I think one of the problems with the entertainment aspect, is that people - IRL as well as here - often tend to create a jargoon quite quickly, where each person has its assigned role and jokes get more and more self-referential and internal. This makes the whole thing stagnate after a while, so new people are needed to keep the fun fresh. I don't think SYM is dying, I agree with T' that every community go though cycles - a workplace, a neighbourhood, a circle of friends - and SYM.

One of the things I have often appreciated about SYM is the mixture of serious topic and spam in the same thread.... So please... spam away :)

I am as guilty as anybody of putting up "no-spam" threads.. but I am thinking that maybe the free-for-all is part of what made SYM the place it was..

I was invisible for a long time, but then I started noticing just what you have pointed out, and am now 'visible'. But, unlike you, I am not afraid to play with myself....

Maybe it is sort of like the stigma attatched to drinking alone.... If you do it with other people it is somehow more responsible. :p
