Enlighten me...What does the fine print say? Will I be subject to the tortures of SYM? ;) :(

This (is SYM "dying?") is actually something I have thought a lot about. I have very ambivalent feelings, but I'll try to get them down for the record ...

Gwalchmai actually said in the farewell to Gruntboy thread that Gruntboy (and his antics) were one of the things that first made him post. I understand that completely, and agree completely. Before I joined, I lurked here for some time (a few weeks or a couple months maybe). At that time, let's see, we had people like Vehemence, Brink, Darkpoet, Georgi, Gruntboy, Weasel, Waverly, Alienbob ... and many others, I am sure. The point is: it was just an entirely different group. It was a different style to SYM altogether that drew me into it. I'm not saying "better," or "worse" - just different. I used to read those posts and just laugh my ass off! :) Some of the stuff was just so damn crazy that I was really - I don't know how to express it - I wanted to join, and join in that kinda crazy, funny, fun, stuff. But I realized, after I posted a bit, that it really isn't something you can "join" unless you have that certain sense of humor already. I don't. ;)

So, for me at least, I have always looked to SYM as someplace I could actually tune into every once and a while, and be entertained. And, yeah, it has changed. It's gotten political, and, as much as I hate to say it, from my perspective, it has gotten a bit stale. But what I think is important is that people understand that they will get out of it what they put into it. If people want politics, then post it and enjoy the level of intellectualism that SYM has to offer (it is quite extraordinary). But for my part, I will always sorta wish that I had been able to be one of those people that could always come up with something entirely clever and unique - people like Waverly and Weasel and Vehemence and those others. But you can't just conjure that back up - well, I can't anyway. ;)

I dunno. Just rambling now. :o ;)

Other people have mentioned MSN and ICQ instant messaging. Never done it myself. I have an MSN account, but only my girlfriend is on my list. ;) And, anyway, I think you can accomplish almost the exact same thing with PMs or e-mails, so I don't know that it IMing would have a unique impact ...

Anyhoo! I guess I don't have any answers, and this post is really more just about my personal and unique experience and viewpoint ... but overall I would say: you can't "kill" SYM. People come and people go - that is just the nature of the system. Post what you feel you would want to see posted, and don't fret about some impact it may have on the course of SYM. SYM will exist long after we're all gone, I'm sure. ;)

Peace.

As sad as it may be, but all things must change - otherwise it will stagnate and wither away.

I've been here for almost 3 years and see many things come and go, and it does seem like SYM have slowed down, including my own posting - but then again - I've never posted here much and mostly been the "posting lurker".
It might be the "cliques" of people have started to communicate in other means and have started to communicate more via "real life" and while it might be "slowing" on the community of SYM I can't help but feel happy for these people, that they found such friends via a board like this :)

As for the newcommers - I'm sure will try to keep SYM alive in some form, it might not be the carefree spammingdays of early SYM, but I think it will exsist for as long as The Almigthy Buck sees fit to run this world
Besides - I doubt most of us thought we would hang around here for up to 3 years anyway :) goes to show what one common interest can do with people.

You rang...

In terms of my prescription, I think you need to be a whole lot more serious and political, and you need to start writing everything in blue pinstripe. :)
