just got a very belated birthday present in the form of a bloody amazing saul williams CD. and so, without further ado, I give you...

OM NIA MERICAN - SAUL WILLIAMS

om nia merican born of beats and blood
the concert of the sun unplugged, i'm the
om nia merican born of beats and blood
the concert of the sun unplugged

o say can you - 20,000 negro leagues beneath
the sea foamed clouds laced with ink that stains
when rains. makes books of trees at once
upon a dawn's early light, pawn bishop knight
children of night, may queens take kinds
hereafter, thereafter the trickling sands
demand that our decisions be timeless i'm the

om nia merican born of beats and blood
the concert of the sun unplugged, i'm the
om nia merican born of beats and blood
the concert of the sun unplugged, i'm the

offspring of spring reborn, pledged, and
sworn - the risen ash of a flag burned and
torn, i'm the blood of the womb, the risen
tide of the moon, the dark side that the
sun cannot hide, i'm the pages of history
read between the lines, the shining truth
behind your symbols and signs, i'm the son
of a minister, love a teacher, my mother
taught me well so i rebel, i'm the bell retolled
yet a story untold, the hidden force behind
a rock that was rolled. i'm the om nia
merican born of beats and blood, the concert
of the sun, unplugged, i'm the om nia
merican born of beats and blood the concert
of the sun unplugged

lift every voice and sing
til earth and heaven ring
Here where the flattering and mendacious swarm
Of lying epitaths their secrets keep,
At last incapable of further harm
The lewd forefathers of the village sleep.

Digging in the vault, as usual. Here's a great song from seventy five years ago:

Anything Goes (Cole Porter)

Times have changed;
And we've ofter rewound the clock,
Since the Puritans got a shock,
When they landed on Plymouth Rock...
If today, any shock they might try to stem,
'Stead of landing of Plymouth Rock---
Plymouth Rock would land on them...!

In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking
But now, God knows,
Anything Goes!

Good authors, too,
Who once knew better words
Now only use four letter words,
Writing prose,
Anyhting Goes!

If driving fast cars you like,
If low bars you like,
If old hymns you like,
If bare limbs you like,
If Mae West you like,
Or me undressed you like,
Why, nobody will oppose!

When every night
The set thats smart
Is intruding on nudist parties
In studios,
Anything Goes!

The world has gone mad today,
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And days night today,
And that gent today,
You gave a cent today,
Once owned several Chateaus...

When Sam Goldwyn
Can with great conviction
Instruct Anna Sten in diction
Than Anna shows,
Anything Goes!

(Anna Sten was a rival to Garbo, and once as popular. She had to make the transition to speaking when sound took over in films in the late 1920s, but she only spoke a few Eastern European languages. Samuel Goldwyn, of the "G" in MGM, offered to teach her English; and Goldwyn out a heavily Russo-Jewish accent. So poor Sten was laughed off the screen, when she started mouthing the most romantic lines in Goldwyn's accent.)

(Incidentally, I was going to post some Fugs lyrics instead--they were the original protest band, before that became cool in the late 60s--but every line would have had a word bleeped out. :( )
To the Righteous belong the fruits of violent victory. The rest of us will have to settle for warm friends, warm lovers, and a wink from a quietly supportive universe.

For all you monday working punks like me...

Artist: Alan Jackson & Jimmy Buffett
Song: It's 5 O'clock Somwhere

Lyrics:

The sun is hot and that old clock is movin' slow
And so am I
The workday passes like molasses in wintertime
But it's July

I'm gettin' paid by the hour and older by the minute
My boss just pushed me over the limit
I'd like to call it somethin'
I think I'll just call it a day

Chorus
Pour me somethin' tall and strong
Make it a hurricane before I go insane
It's only half past twelve but I don't care
It's 5 O'clock somewhere

This lunch break is gonna take all afternoon
half the night
Tomorrow morning I know they'll be hell to pay
Hey, but that's alright

I ain't had a day off now in over a year
My Jamican vacation's gonna start right here
Get the phones for me
You can tell 'em I just sailed away

Chorus
Pour me somethin' tall and strong
Make it a hurricane before I go insane
It's only half past twelve but I don't care
It's 5 O'clock somewhere

I could pay off my tab
Pour myself in a cab
And be back to work before 2

At a moment like this
I can't help but wonder
What would Jimmy Buffet do?

Jimmy Buffet
Funny you should ask that
I'd say
Pour me somethin' tall and strong
Make it a hurricane before I go insane
It's only half past twelve but I don't care

Jimmy buffett and Alan Jackson together
Pour me somethin' tall and strong
Make it a hurricane before I go insane
It's only half past twelve but I don't care
Alan Jackson: He don't care... I don't care
It's five o'clock somewhere

Jimmy Buffett
What time zone am I on?
What country am I in?

Alan Jackson
It doesn't matter, it's five o'clock somewhere

Jimmy Buffett
It's always on 5 in margarittaville come to think of it

Alan Jackson
I heard that

Jimmy Buffett
You've been to there haven't ya?

Alan Jackson
Yes sir.

Jimmy Buffett
I seen your boat there

Alan Jackson
I've been to margarittaville a few times

Jimmy Buffett
Alright, well that's good.

Alan Jackson
I'm on my way back.

Jimmy Buffett
Well alright, I just wanna make sure you can keep it between the navigational beacon.
Alright, well it's five o'clock, let's go somewhere.

Alan Jackson
I'm ready, crank it up.

Jimmy Buffett
Let's get outta here

Alan Jackson
I'm gone

Jimmy Buffett
Let's get outta here.

In a nostalgic moment here ... it happens ... so an "oldie" but not wellknown from the 80s band Gorky Park:

"Sometimes at night"
It's been a long time since I was a boy
Things are never gonna be the same
(And) I was taught to tell what's right from wrong
To be fair how to play the game
I forgot this rule cause the game's so cruel
My body's aching but I'm running fast
Cause I have to keep the pace
I know I can't win but I have to
Try to survive this human race
This crazy game called life

Sometimes at night
I feel like running in the other direction
Sometimes at night
I see so clearly the world's imperfections
The game called life

But in the morning
When the dreams are gone
And I join the race again
I try to be strong to forget the pain
But I know it's all in vain
Things stay the same
In the game called life
The game called life

Sometimes at night
I feel like running in the other direction
Sometimes at night
I see so clearly the world's imperfection
Sometimes at night
I close my eyes and see a shattered reflection
Sometimes at night
I see so clearly the world's imperfection
The game called life

Sometimes at night
I feel like running in the other direction
Sometimes at night
I see so clearly the world's imperfection
Sometimes at night
I close my eyes and see a shattered reflection
Sometimes at night
I see so clearly the world's imperfection

It is one of the rare songs I can identify with :)

Where The Wild Roses Grow - Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

From the first day I saw her I knew she was the one
She stared in my eyes and smiled
For her lips were the colour of the roses
That grew down the river, all bloody and wild

When he knocked on my door and entered the room
My trembling subsided in his sure embrace
He would be my first man, and with a careful hand
He wiped at the tears that ran down my face

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

On the second day I brought her a flower
She was more beautiful than any woman I'd seen
I said, "Do you know where the wild roses grow
So sweet and scarlet and free?"

On the second day he came with a single red rose
Said: "Will you give me your loss and your sorrow"
I nodded my head, as I lay on the bed
He said, "If I show you the roses, will you follow?"

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

On the third day he took me to the river
He showed me the roses and we kissed
And the last thing I heard was a muttered word
As he knelt (stood smiling) above me with a rock in his fist

On the last day I took her where the wild roses grow
And she lay on the bank, the wind light as a thief
And I kissed her goodbye, said, "All beauty must die"
And lent down and planted a rose between her teeth

They call me The Wild Rose
But my name was Elisa Day
Why they call me it I do not know
For my name was Elisa Day

A very haunting song...

@Tammy that is a cool song  This is my favourite Nick Cave song though...

Into My Arms

I don't believe in an interventionist god
But I know darling that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
Leave you as you are
If he felt he had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms

Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord

And I don't believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you, I wonder if that's true
And if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk like Christ in grace and love
And guide you into my arms

Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord

But I believe in love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
So keep your candles burning
Make a journey bright and pure
That you'll keep returning
Always and evermore

Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord
Into my arms, oh lord
Who, me?!?

Evanescence - Imaginary

I linger in the doorway
Of alarmclock screaming
Monsters calling my name
Let me stay
Where the wind will whisper to me
Where the raindrops
As their falling tell a story

In my field of paper flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me

Don't say I'm out of touch
With this rampant chaos, your reality
I know well what lies beyond my sleeping refuge
The nightmare I built my own world to escape

In my field of purple flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me

Swallowed up in the sound of my screaming
Cannot cease for the fear of silent nights
Oh how I long for the deep sleep dreaming
The goddess of imaginary light

In my field of purple flowers
And candy clouds of lullaby
I lie inside myself for hours
And watch my purple sky fly over me
If I asked, would you answer? Its your problem. Its a deep, deep problem. I have no way to ask about that... I have no elegant way of stepping into your heart without tracking in filth. So I will wait. Someday, when you want to tell me, tell me then. -Bleach

@Georgi and Tamerlane: I used to be very keen on Nick Cave, though these days I don't listen to him much. His lyrics are superb and his compositional style is fantastic - I just find his subject matter ... well, either disturbing  or depressing. :( But here is one tune that I think shows that brilliant lyrical ability of his: Sad Waters, from his album Your Funeral ... My Trial.

Down the road I look and there runs Mary
Hair of gold and lips like cherries
We go down to the river where the willows weep
Take a naked root for a lovers seat
That rose out of the bitten soil
But sound to the ground by creeping ivy coils
O Mary you have seduced my soul
And I don't know right from wrong
Forever a hostage of your child's world

And then I ran my tin-cup heart along
The prison of her ribs
And with a toss of her curls
That little girl goes wading in
Rollin her dress up past her knee
Turning these waters into wine
Then she platted all the willow vines

Mary in the shallows laughing
Over where the carp dart
Spooked by the new shadows that she cast
Across these sad waters and across my heart

Peace.

I just now finished watching "Wings of Desire" (or, "Der Himmel ueber Berlin," in the original), a film by Wim Wenders. Excellent film, with a great soundtrack. Among other items is this song from Nick Cave which, I think, shows the genious of his lyric-writing. I don't know much about verse or poetry or whatnot, but I think just reading throuh this one puts me in mind of Shakespeare - just something about the way the words flow. Beautiful. :)

And no-one saw the carny go
And the weeks flew by
Until they moved on the show
Leaving his caravan behind
It was parked out on the south east ridge
And as the company crossed the bridge
With the first rain filling the bone-dry river bed
It shone, just so, upon the edge

Dog-boy, Atlas, Half-man, the geeks, the hired hands
There was not one among them that did not cast an eye behind
In the hope that the carny would return to his own kind

And the carny had a horse, all skin and bone
A bow-backed nag, that he named "Sorrow"
Now it is buried in a shallow grave
In the then parched meadow

And the dwarves were given the task of digging the ditch
And laying the nag's carcass in the ground
And boss Bellini, waving his smoking pistol around
saying "The nag is dead meat"
"We can't afford to carry dead weight"
The whole company standing about
Not making a sound
And turning to dwarves perched on the enclosure gate
The boss says "Bury this lump of crow bait"

And then the rain came
Everybody running for their wagons
Tying all the canvas flaps down
The mangy cats growling in ther cages
The Bird-girl flapping and squawking around
The whole valley reeking of wet beast
Wet beast and rotten hay
Freak and brute creation
Packed up and on their way

The three dwarves peering from their wagon's hind
Moses says to Noah "We shoulda dugga deepa one"
Their grizzled faces like dying moons
Still dirty from the digging done

And as the company passed from the valley
Into a higher ground
The rain beat on the ridge and on the meadow
And on the mound

Until nothing was left, nothing at all
Except the body of Sorrow
That rose in time
To float upon the surface of the eaten soil

And a murder of crows did circle round
First one, then the others flapping blackly down

And the carny's van still sat upon the edge
Tilting slowly as the firm ground turned to sludge
And the rain it hammered down

And no-one saw the carny go
I say it's funny how things go

I just love that horse named Sorrow bit!

Peace.

Excellent excellent @Tam & Der Moench.

But hows about this

TV Set - The Cramps

Oh baby I see you on my TV set
Yeah baby I see you on my TV set
I cut your head off
And put it in my TV set
I use your eyeballs as dials on my TV set
I watch TV
I watch TV
Since I put you in my TV set
Oh baby I hear you on my radio
You know I flip flip flip on my radio
I hear you drip drip drip on my radio
AM radio
PM radio
Since I tuned you in my radio
Oh baby I see you in my fridgedaire
Yes baby I see you in my fridgedaire
Next to the mayonaise
On the rack
I'll see you tonight for a midnight snack
Although its cold
You wont grow old
You'll be well preserved in my fridgedaire
Oh you look so good in my crib at night
I could give you a million hugs
You look so good covered up in bugs
I missed some there
Under your chair, that's alright!
I'll sweep you under the rug nwahahahah
Oh baby I see you on my TV set
I see you on my TV set
Since I cut your head off and put it in my TV set
I use your eyeballs as dials on my TV set
I need TV
I need TV
Since I see you getting
So upset.

We Gotta Get Out Of This Place

In this dirty old part of the city
Where the sun refused to shine
People tell me there ain't no use in tryin'

Now my girl you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true
You'll be dead before your time is due, I know

Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'
Watched his hair been turnin' grey
He's been workin' and slavin' his life away
Oh yes I know it

(Yeah!) He's been workin' so hard
(Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby
(Yeah!) Every night and day
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
'cause girl, there's a better life for me and you

Now my girl you're so young and pretty
And one thing I know is true, yeah
You'll be dead before your time is due, I know it

Watch my daddy in bed a-dyin'
Watched his hair been turnin' grey, yeah
He's been workin' and slavin' his life away
I know he's been workin' so hard

(Yeah!) I've been workin' too, baby
(Yeah!) Every day baby
(Yeah!) Whoa!
(Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!)

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
Girl, there's a better life for me and you
Somewhere baby, somehow I know it

We gotta get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta get out of this place
Girl, there's a better life for me and you
Believe me baby
I know it baby
You know it too

Fortunate Son
Creedence Clearwater Revival

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, they're red, white and blue.
And when the band plays "hail to the chief",
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, lord,

It ain't me, it ain't me, i ain't no senator's son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; i ain't no fortunate one, no,

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, don't they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It ain't me, it ain't me, i ain't no millionaire's son, no.
It ain't me, it ain't me; i ain't no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, lord,
And when you ask them, "how much should we give?"
Ooh, they only answer more! more! more! yoh,

It ain't me, it ain't me, i ain't no military son, son.
It ain't me, it ain't me; i ain't no fortunate one, one.

It ain't me, it ain't me, i ain't no fortunate one, no no no,
It ain't me, it ain't me, i ain't no fortunate son, no no no,

Yep...all of'em :D

Chronicle Vol 1&2 cover the band really well. Vol 1 has the major hits you hear on the radio, while Vol 2 has a lot of the songs you never hear that much anymore.

Outside the collections, Cosmos Factory, Green River and Willie& the Poor Boys are what I'd consider the must have CD's they released. Pendulum was good, but it had a bit of a different feel to a few of the songs. Mardi Gras was the only album they put out I didn't like. At that point, the rest of the band was fed up with Fogerty domitaing the creative side of the band, and as a result, they produced an album where they all shared those duties equally. As a result, the songs were not anywhere near what the earlier stuff had been.

Songwise, I liked a lot of the less played stuff like Tombstone Shadow, Sinister Purpose, Bootleg, and the like.

I just am one of those people who thinks Fogerty can do no wrong, I own'em all, including his solo offerings

I don't like CCR on principle... because in the pub I worked at in WA, the locals insisted on putting their cover of I Heard It Through The Grapevine on the jukebox, and didn't actually seem to be aware of the existence of the (vastly superior) original version. Blasphemy I say.  :p

First We Take Manhattan - Leonard Cohen

They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom
For trying to change the system from within
I’m coming now, I’m coming to reward them
First we take manhattan, then we take berlin.

I’m guided by a signal in the heavens
I’m guided by this birthmark on my skin
I’m guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take manhattan, then we take berlin.

I’d really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those.

Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you’re worried that I just might win
You know the way to stop me, but you don’t have the discipline
How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin
First we take manhattan, then we take berlin.

I don’t like your fashion business mister
And I don’t like these drugs that keep you thin
I don’t like what happened to my sister
First we take manhattan, then we take berlin

I’d really like to live beside you, baby
I love your body and your spirit and your clothes
But you see that line there moving through the station?
I told you, I told you, told you, I was one of those.

And I thank you for those items that you sent me
The monkey and the plywood violin
I practiced every night, now I’m ready
First we take manhattan, then we take berlin

I’m guided by a signal in the heavens
I’m guided by this birthmark on my skin
I’m guided by the beauty of our weapons
First we take manhattan, then we take berlin.

Remember me, I used to live for music
Remember me, I brought your groceries in
Well it’s father’s day and everybody’s wounded
First we take manhattan, then we take berlin!

The original version of this is by Tears for Fears  but far superior is the version on the Donnie Darko soundtrack, by Gary Jules...

Mad World

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
And their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad world

Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying
Are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
'Cos I find it hard to take
When people run in circles
It's a very, very
Mad world
Who, me?!?
Locked
