Ok to update the problem I'll post this:

1. ReD tried to install BGII but it was corrupted and only part of it was installed.
2. ReD had no way of uninstalling it so he just deleted the folder it was installed into.
3. ReD got a new good copy of BGII and tried to install it but the computer still thinks BGII is existant because there wasn't a good uninstall
4. ReD deletes all traces of registry keys he can find of BGII
5. ReD reboots yet it still does not work.

I'm no expert at these things, but how about using Configsafe? Just restore your system configurations to the last snapshot taken before you ever installed BG II (assuming you have a recent snapshot available and won't be erasing something important you've done in the meantime). Then you should be able to do a clean install.

Hope this helps,

That's only available in Win ME I thought. I've never heard of configsafe though, but ME has a similar feature available. If it's available for Win 98 where can you get it?

I'm running Windows 98 and ConfigSafe came preinstalled on my computer--I was thinking that our friend would have it as well (maybe he doesn't). It's a nice little program that bailed me out when I messed up my OS once. It just takes a snapshot of your system configuration every week or so (or as often as you like). So if I did something goofy to my OS, I can go to last week's snapshot and restore--I just lose whatever I've installed or downloaded since the last snapshot.

I'd recommend that, if he has the program, to take a snapshot of the current configuration before he restores to an older version. Just in case it doesn't work for him.

Like I said, I'm not much on the technical side, so if I'm not making any sense, let me know. They have a website, www.configsafe.com, that probably explains it a lot better than I can Image

I do not have Configsafe..and I am aware that that is a feature of Windows ME..however I have 98 SE. If I did have Configsafe I wouldn't have posted this thread Image

BTW that's a dead link.

Sorry, I added a comma there by mistake. The link is www.configsafe.com if anybody else is interested in the site.

Hope you get your problem worked out, in any event.

I'd try that configsafe thing; what could it hurt? I couldn't get my friend on the line, but I'm hunting through my system right now to see what I can find. BTW- my screen name for AIM is flinfman if you want to talk in real time about this.

in my registry these are the pathes I found:

HKEY_Current_User--Software--Interplay Entertainment Corp--Status--Baldur's Gate 2

HKEY_Local_Machine--Software--Bioware
HKEY_Local_Machine--Software--Bioware Corp
HKEY_Local_Machine--Software--Bioware Corp.
HKEY_Local_Machine--Software--Gamespy--Games

That's everything I could find in my registry for BG2. Hope that helps.

Then I'm at a loss my friend. For what it's worth I'm sorry. You might want to try Interplay's help number; not sure if it's charge or what. If anyone else has any ideas, feel free to chip in here.

Ya I'll keep this thread in my favorites and I'll check back frequently. I won't do a format just yet until I'm positive it's all I can do. I'll try the help number. Thanks everyone for your help, and if there's anybody that can help post away here.

Here's the problem for you newbs to this thread:

Red, did you have BG 1 installed ? (The BG2 without the patch looks also in registry under the BG1 entries)
Did the BG2 still appears in your control panel under the installed software section ?

In any case, the following should help:
please use regedit to locate everything named "Baldur's" in your registry and delete it (always the complete keyfolder named "Baldur's..." ). Search for keys and values. If you have BG 1 installed look carefully to avoid deleteing BG 1 entries.

I dont't know which version or language pack you have, but the following should always apply :
There must be an entry in the registry under

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\{SomeKey}\

SomeKey can be a 'name' or a strange combination of Digits and Caplital letters. This key folder has a key in it
"DisplayName" with a string value "Baldur's Gate ..."
and at least two more keys "LogFile" and another
"UninstallString" [ value like "rundll32 <path_to_the_install_information> ]
Delete this section (left pane in the regedit, click on the {SomeKey} and do a right mouse click and select "delete". Use with care, dont't delete any other key folders !!!
That is the path where the system look for the install/uninstall program. And if the installation program adds that entry but does not copy all files, you will have the same sort of problems you described.
Hope that helps and you can start your game .
