here's a rather nice track from a band with a disconcerting name, but an ungodly amount of musicalityness.

A Prince in a Paupper's Grave
by Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine

In a bar Johnny drinks
Johnny drinks Johnnie Walker
Till he runs up a bill he can't pay
He's drinking to the memory
Of a prince in a pauper's grave

And it's go Johnny go
Where the bruises don't show
In the church yard where the nervous get wrecked
And turn off your wireless
For two minutes of silence
Cough up and pay your respects

And go to the park
Where vicars and tarts
Prey for their tormented souls
By the American graffiti
From Elephant and Castle
In Ford Capri Orange
And Volkswagen yellow and gold

Johnny drinks, Johnny drinks,
Johnny drinks Johnnie Walker
Till he runs up a bill
The Pope couldn't pay
c0ckles his muscles alive alive 'o
Smashes his bottles of unholy water
And it's go Johnny, go Johnny go, go, go

Back to the churchyard
Where day out and day in
Those original sinners
Are religiously praying
And where there was muck
There's a brass band that's playing
Playing to the memory
Of a prince in a pauper's grave
Here where the flattering and mendacious swarm
Of lying epitaths their secrets keep,
At last incapable of further harm
The lewd forefathers of the village sleep.

I've been meaning to get a couple of Joe Strummer songs in here since he passed away, but never got around to it until now. "Silver and Gold" is an appropriate song in light of his early death:

I'm gonna go out dancin' every night
I'm gonna see all the city lights
I'll do everything silver and gold
I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna take a trip around the world
I'm gonna kiss all the pretty girls
I'll do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

Oh I do a lotta things I know is wrong
Hope I'm forgiven before I'm gone
It'll take a lotta prayers to save my soul
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna take a trip around the world
Gonna kiss all the pretty girls
Who do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I'm gonna go out dancin' every night
I'm gonna see all your city lights
I'm gonna do everything silver and gold
And I got to hurry up before I grow too old

I also looked all over for the full lyrics to "Long Shadow," from the same album, but couldn't find them. The intro, though, I know by heart:

Well I'll tell you one thing that I know
You don't face your demons down
You gotta grapple 'em, Jack,
and pin 'em to the ground

The devil may care, maybe God even won't
Better make sure you check on the do's and the don'ts
Crawl up the mountain, to reach where the eagles fly
Sure you can glimpse from the mountaintop,
Where the soul of the muse might ride

And you put it all together
You won't have to look around
You know you cast
a long shadow on the ground.

Rest in peace, Joe.
A is A . . . but Siouxsie defies definition.

Because I'm a damned tree-hugging hippy.

Working Class Hero
As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
Till the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be
They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
Till you're so ****ing crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still ****ing peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me
Vicsun, I certainly agree with your assertion that you are an unpleasant person. ~Chanak

My all time favorite song

Best song I've ever heard, and the only song of which I know every line...

L'Amour Toujours

I still believe in your eyes;
I just don't care what you have done in your life.
Baby I'll always be here by your side;
Don't leave me waiting too long, please come by!
I, only I still believe in your eyes;
There is no choice, I belong to your life.
Because I, I live to love you someday;
You'll be my baby and we'll fly away...

Every day and every night,
I always dream that you are by my side.
Oh, baby, every day and every night,
Well I said everything's gonna be alright...

And I'll fly with you,
I'll fly with you,
I'll fly with you!!!

Dream of me!
I still believe in your eyes;
I just don't care what you've done in your life.
Baby I'll always be here by your side;
Don't leave me waiting too long, please come by!
I, only I still believe in your eyes;
There is no choice, I belong to your life.
Because I will live to love you some day;
You'll be my baby and we'll fly away...

Every day and every night,
I always dream that You are by my side.
Oh, baby, every day and every night,
Well I said everything's gonna be alright...

And I'll fly with you,
I'll fly with you,
I'll fly with you!!!

First song I could think of, it's from Rage Against The Machine

Testify

The movie ran through me
The glamour subdue me
The tabloid untie me
I'm empty please fill me
Mister anchor assure me
That Baghdad is burning
Your voice it is so soothing
That cunning mantra of killing
I need you my witness
To dress this up so bloodless
To numb me and purge me now
Of thoughts of blaming you
Yes the car is our wheelchair
My witness your coughing
Oily silence mocks the legless
Now traveling in coffins
But on the corner
The jury's sleepless
We found your weakness
And it's right outside our door

Now testify

With precision you feed me
My witness I'm hungry
Your temple it calms me
So I can carry on
My slaving sweating the skin right off my bones
On a bed of fire I'm choking on the smoke that fills my home
The wrecking ball rushing
My witness your blushing
The pipeline is gushing
While here we lie in tombs
While on the corner
The jury's sleepless
We found your weakness
And it's right outside your door

Now testify

Mass graves for the pump and the price is set

Who controls the past now controls the future
Who controls the present now controls the past
Who controls the past now controls the future
Who controls the present now?

Now testify

Red Right Hand
by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Take a litle walk to the edge of town
Go across the tracks
Where the viaduct looms,
like a bird of doom
As it shifts and cracks
Where secrets lie in the border fires,
in the humming wires
Hey man, you know
you're never coming back
Past the square, past the bridge,
past the mills, past the stacks
On a gathering storm comes
a tall handsome man
In a dusty black coat with
a red right hand

He'll wrap you in his arms,
tell you that you've been a good boy
He'll rekindle all the dreams
it took you a lifetime to destroy
He'll reach deep into the hole,
heal your shrinking soul
Hey buddy, you know you're
never ever coming back
He's a god, he's a man,
he's a ghost, he's a guru
They're whispering his name
through this disappearing land
But hidden in his coat
is a red right hand

You ain't got no money?
He'll get you some
You ain't got no car? He'll get you one
You ain't got no self-respect,
you feel like an insect
Well don't you worry buddy,
cause here he comes
Through the ghettos and the barrio
and the bowery and the slum
A shadow is cast wherever he stands
Stacks of green paper in his
red right hand

You'll see him in your nightmares,
you'll see him in your dreams
He'll appear out of nowhere but
he ain't what he seems
You'll see him in your head,
on the TV screen
And hey buddy, I'm warning
you to turn it off
He's a ghost, he's a god,
he's a man, he's a guru
You're one microscopic cog
in his catastrophic plan
Designed and directed by
his red right hand
Here where the flattering and mendacious swarm
Of lying epitaths their secrets keep,
At last incapable of further harm
The lewd forefathers of the village sleep.

Kings of Leon

Holy Roller Novacaine

My darling you look lovely
I've come to lay you down
Uncover your head and submit to me
We'll make a joyful sound
I don't care if you're by yourself
Or you're all alone when you need my help
Keep that smile on your pretty face
Cause you don't have much I can't take away

Chorus:
Don't you worry baby
You won't feel a thing
Close your eyes
Holy Roller Novocaine

Lord's gonna get us back (x4)
I know, I know
Lord's gonna get us back (x4)
I know, I know

You'll be hearin' me comin'
But I can't come inside
I'll be out back in my white Cadillac
Won't you join me for a ride
Let me take you up to the mountain top
There I'll show all the goods I got
Don't look back keep your eyes ahead
This could be the night that the moon goes red

Repeat Chorus

All the world is moanin'
And baby so am I
I'm just givin' you warning
And I'm telling you why

Lord's gonna get us back (x4)
I know, I know
Lord's gonna get us back (x4)
I know, I know
Lord's gonna get us back (x4)
I know, I know
Lord's gonna get us back (x4)
I know, I know

Nick Cave? The one who wrote "Loverman"? (My favorite band, Metallica, covered that song.)

a quick search on google says yes. I must admit that, although I'm an occasional litener, it's my sister who's more of the fan. when she was round mine last she brought the album with red right hand on, and I fell in love with it.

Stray
Wolf's Rain Opening Song

Vocals: Steve Conte
Lyrics: Tim Jenson
Music and Arrangement: Yoko Kanno

Stray! Stray!

In the cold breeze that I walk along
The memories of generations burn within me
Been forever since I cried the pain and sorrow
I live and die, proud of my people gaining

I'm here standing at the edge
Starin up at where the moon should be

Stray!
No regrets 'cause I got nothin to lose
Ever stray!
So I'm gonna live my life as I choose
Until I fall..

Stray! Stray!
Stray! Stray!

In the white freeze, I never spoke of tears
Or opened up to anyone including myself
I would like to find a way to open to you
Been awhile, don't know if I remember how to

I'm here waiting on the edge
Would I be alright showing myself to you?
It's always been so hard to do..

Stray!
No regrets 'cause I got nothin to lose
Ever stray!
So I'm gonna live my life as I choose
Until I fall...

Stray! Stray!
Stray! Stray!
Stray! Stray!

Is there a place left there for me
Somewhere that I belong
Or will I always live this way... ?
Always stray

No regrets 'cause I got nothin to lose
Ever stray!
So I'm gonna live my life as I choose
Cause all things fall

Stray! Stray!
Stray! Stray!
Stray! Stray!

Stray...
I'm not dead yet :D :p

One of the most talented popular music artists that were around. The lyrics are as apt now as when it was written.

Bobby Brown - Frank Zappa

Hey there, people, I'm Bobby Brown
They say I'm the cutest boy in town
My car is fast, my teeth is shiney
I tell all the girls they can kiss my heinie
Here I am at a famous school
I'm dressin' sharp 'n' I'm
actin' cool
I got a cheerleader here wants to help with my paper
Let her do all the work 'n' maybe later I'll rape her

Oh God I am the American dream
I do not think I'm too extreme
An' I'm a handsome sonofa*****
I'm gonna get a good job 'n' be real rich
get a good
get a good
get a good
get a good job

Women's Liberation
Came creepin' across the nation
I tell you people I was not ready
When I ****ed this dyke by the name of Freddie
She made a little speech then,
Aw, she tried to make me say "when"
She had my balls in a vice, but she left the ****
I guess it's still hooked on, but now it shoots too quick

Oh God I am the American dream
But now I smell like Vaseline
An' I'm a miserable sonofa*****
Am I a boy or a lady...I don't know which
I wonder wonder
wonder wonder

So I went out 'n' bought me a leisure suit
I jingle my change, but I'm still kinda cute
Got a job doin' radio promo
An' none of the jocks can even tell I'm a homo
Eventually me 'n' a friend
Sorta drifted along into S&M
I can take about an hour on the tower of power
'Long as I gets a little golden shower

Oh God I am the American dream
With a spindle up my butt till it makes me scream
An' I'll do anything to get ahead
I lay awake nights sayin', "Thank you, Fred!"
Oh God, oh God, I'm so fantastic!
Thanks to Freddie, I'm a sexual spastic
And my name is Bobby Brown
Watch me now, I'm goin down,
And my name is Bobby Brown
Watch me now, I'm goin down

Sigh, I don't understand the crazy American rules for censorship - why censor a mild slang word for male reproductive organ but not "rape"?

it seems to me this is the kind of lyrics i always wanted to write

sting - Inside

Inside the doors are sealed to love
Inside my heart is sleeping
Inside the fingers of my glove
Inside the bones of my right hand
Inside it's colder than the stars
Inside the dogs are weeping
Inside the circus of the wind
Inside the clocks are filled with sand
Inside she'll never hurt me
Inside the winter's creeping
Inside the compass of the night
Inside the folding of the land

Outside the stars are turning
Outside the world's still burning

Inside my head's a box of stars I never dared to open
Inside the wounded hide their scars, inside this lonesome sparrow's fall
Inside the songs of our defeat, they sing of treaties broken
Inside this army's in retreat, we hide beneath the thunder's call

Outside the rain keeps falling
Outside the drums are calling
Outside the flood won't wait
Outside they're hammering down the gate

Love is the child of an endless war
Love is an open wound still raw
Love is a shameless banner unfurled
Love's an explosion,
Love is the fire of the world
Love is a violent star
A tide of destruction
Love is an angry scar
A violation, a mutilation, capitulation, love is annihilation.

Inside the failures of the light, the night is wrapped around me
Inside my eyes deny their sight, you'd never find me in this place
Inside we're hidden from the moonlight, we shift between the shadows
Inside the compass of the night, inside the memory of your face

Outside the walls are shaking
Inside the dogs are waking
Outside the hurricane won't wait
Inside they're howling down the gate

Love is the child of an endless war
Love is an open wound still raw
Love is a shameless banner unfurled
Love's an explosion,
Love is the fire at the end of the world
Love is a violent star
A tide of destruction
Love is an angry scar
The pain of instruction
Love is a violation, a mutilation, capitulation,
Love is annihilation.

I climb this tower inside my head
A spiral stair above my bed
I dream the stairs don't ask me why,
I throw myself into the sky

Love me like a baby, love me like an only child
Love me like an ocean; love me like a mother mild
Love me like a father, love me like a prodigal son
Love me like a sister, love me like the world has just begun
Love me like a prodigy, love me like an idiot boy,
Love me like an innocent, love me like your favorite toy
Love me like a virgin, love me like a courtesan,
Love me like a sinner, love me like a dying man.

Annihilate me, infiltrate me, incinerate me, accelerate me, mutilate me, inundate me, violate me, implicate me, vindicate me, devastate me

Love me like a parasite, love me like a dying sun
Love me like a criminal, love me like a man on the run

Radiate me, subjugate me, incubate me, recreate me, demarcate me, educate me, punctuate me, evaluate me, conjugate me, impregnate me, designate me, humiliate me, segregate me, opiate me, calibrate me, replicate me
Finding the world in the smallnes of the grain of sand
And holding infinities in the palm of your hand
And Heaven's realms in the seedling of this tiny flower
And eternities in the space of a single hour.

Time

Time here all but means nothing just shadows that move cross the wall
They keep me company but they don't ask of me they don't say nothin at all

I need just a little more silence, i need just a little more time

You send your thieves to me silently stalking me dragging me into your war
would you give me no choice i know you cant resist trying to reopen a sore

so leave me be, i dont want to argue i just get confused and i come undone
if i agree well its just to appease you 'cause i dont remember what we're fighting for

you see love a tight thorny thread that you spin in a circle of gold
to have me to hold me a token for all to see captured to be yours alone

i need just a little more silence, yeah i need just a little more time

for courage to pull away there will be hell to pay deeper you cut the bone

Time here all but means nothing just shadows that move cross the wall
They keep me company but they don't ask of me they don't say nothin at all

I post up this song's lyrics because it's so representative of what I am feeling right now.

Hey Jude - The Beatles

Hey, Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

Hey, Jude, don't be afraid
You were made to go out and get her
The minute you let her under your skin
Then you begin to make it better.

And any time you feel the pain, hey, Jude, refrain
Don't carry the world upon your shoulders
Well don't you know that its a fool who plays it cool
By making his world a little colder

Hey, Jude! Don't let her down
You have found her, now go and get her
Remember, to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better.

So let it out and let it in, hey, Jude, begin
You're waiting for someone to perform with
And don't you know that it's just you, hey, Jude,
You'll do, the movement you need is on your shoulder

Hey, Jude, don't make it bad
Take a sad song and make it better
Remember to let her into your heart
Then you can start to make it better

AFGHAN*
Just like the children's sandpit
Just like the wild wild west
At random choose a target
It's not enough to be second best

So now you wanna fight them
The weaker one is always wrong
Yeah now you wanna fight them
A real man's gotta show the world he's strong

Stuck up, abuse of powers
It's a part of a leader's role
”We only take what's ours”
A slick line to stay in control
Hate breeds more hate it's easy to understand
To retaliate and to be a true macho man
goes hand in hand

So show the world you're strong
The weaker one is wrong
And I know it won't take long
Until they're dead and gone

--- Depressive moments give me a feeling of Millencolin... ---
Flesh to stone ain't permanent, it seems.

As I went home on Monday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a horse outside the door where my old horse should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that horse outside the door where my old horse should be?

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a lovely sow that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But a saddle on a sow sure I never saw before

And as I went home on Tuesday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a coat behind the door where my old coat should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that coat behind the door where my old coat should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a woollen blanket that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But buttons in a blanket sure I never saw before

And as I went home on Wednesday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a pipe up on the chair where my old pipe should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that pipe up on the chair where my old pipe should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a lovely tin whistle that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But tobacco in a tin whistle sure I never saw before

And as I went home on Thursday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw two boots beneath the bed where my old boots should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns them boots beneath the bed where my old boots should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
They're two lovely Geranium pots me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But laces in Geranium pots I never saw before

And as I went home on Friday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a head upon the bed where my old head should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that head upon the bed where my old head should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a baby boy that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But a baby boy with his whiskers on sure I never saw before

And as I went home on Saturday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw two hands upon her breasts where my old hands should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns them hands upon your breasts where my old hands should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a lovely night gown that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But fingers in a night gown sure I never saw before

As I went home on Sunday night as drunk as drunk could be
I saw a thing in her thing where my old thing should be
Well, I called me wife and I said to her: Will you kindly tell to me
Who owns that thing in your thing where my old thing should be

Ah, you're drunk,
you're drunk you silly old fool,
still you can not see
That's a lovely tin whistle that me mother sent to me
Well, it's many a day I've travelled a hundred miles or more
But hair on a tin whistle sure I never saw before

Ah gotta love this song :D

Ah if I could only find their best lyric/song (still speaking of the dubliners off course), I can't recall the name and since you say that you listened to music like this I figured you might know it, it goes something like this:

Once there was a jolly ??........................... as jolly could be
It's not much, I know, but it's just so annoying not
remembering :(

There's like seven verses if I'm right..

Minneapolis

I've been waiting for you to come back
Since you left Minneapolis
Snow covers the streetlamps and the windowsills
The buildings and the brittle crooked trees
Dead leaves of December
Thin skinned and splintered
Never gotten used to this bitter winter

I've been wasted, angry and sad
Since you left Minneapolis
I wish my thoughts were pure like the driven snow
Like the heavens and the spring's virgin buds
But they strangle me with their sin
Fill me up with poison
Black clouds have covered up the sun again

I can always trace it back
To that night in Minneapolis
Here on the seventh floor in a room I can't call mine
Deadbolt on the door, do not disturb sign
Shaking and trembling
On the clean white linen
Slivers of starlight across the ceiling

A dozen yellow roses
All that's left in Minneapolis
I wish I'd never seen your face or heard your voice
You're a bad pain in my gut
I wanna spit you out
Open up this wound again
Let my blood flow red and thin
Into the glistening
Into the whiteness
Into the melting snow of Minneapolis

Lucinda Williams

@KoreeGahn, it rings a bell.. but I can't quite place my finger on it, maybe I'lll try a net search at some point and see if something comes up

Are you sure it is not Waltzing Matilda? The Dubliners performed that one too, and it is a song about a Jolly Swagman...
