wow! big response needs a big answer:
relax Rail, maybe I should have said a slight waste for I prefer soloing or little parties. In P&P our thief was really cool (a joker anyway) but in BG they're kind of lacking something. A normal thief could try to backstab a monster but if he fails or the monster survives the first strike he gets his butt kicked really hard. They can't wear helmets, shields or heavy armor even if they want to, have limited weapons mostly without spezialization (not all), can't use scrolls (like in P&P) etc. Thus they advance really quick in levels, but what for? You have a level 38 thief, all abilities 200 about. A fine thief but no killer, must be the power gamer in me
. Simply wipe out all the disadvantages with a fighter or a mage attached. It's like more effiency with less people.
About the choice of weapons, I read the rules and o.k. I was wrong: In fact you could use MOST 1-h weapons to backstab. Only was confused since our GM in P&P forbade us to backstab with a weapon bigger than shortsword. mea culpa.
Gruntboy you're right about Daggers, Short- and Longswords...for plain thieves. Multi-/dualclassed thieves could use a bigger variety of weapons.
plz, don't get me wrong, I still think thieves are great and actually like them. I have 3 characters in my party here in BG2 and two of them are thieves.
dual Berzerk->Thief backstabs with Celestial Fury (and Crom Faeyr hehe)
multi Cleric/Thief backstabs with Staff Mace (1-handed quarterstaff...really cool, and Flail Of The Ages)

Definitely halflings. Their race just screams "thief!" All those bonuses to their thieving abilities, and of couse the extra dexterity. Their nature is also very suited to thieving. Elves can make good thieves, but halflings are simply born thieves.

In BGII I tried to have Jan backstab with a longsword and was told (by the game) that I could not do so. May only be possible with a Fighter/Thief combination? is it a weapon proficency thing..? - Curdis

Hey, I think Thieves are less powerful than most classes. I just think they are a blast to play! All that sneaking around, then the quickstrike backstab that draws all the attention to you, so you run off and hide in shadows as you round your first corner, all as they run into the trap you left for them at the very same corner. I find it very interesting. However, they may be fun, but they certainly aren't powerful in melee. Soloing with an assassin is far more difficult than I thought it would be. And I thought it would be pretty hard.
A must for a thief:
Boots of Speed (to get away after backstabbing)
Items with invis. power (ring of invis., ring of Gaxx, etc.)
Cloak of Non-Detection
Shadow Dragon Armor (helps, but there are great leathers in the game as well)
Mask of Strom III (does this seem to protect anyone else from crit. hits?)

i dont htink the mask of strohm III does anything for you, except it lets you see the invisible guardian (fire elemental) in Firkraag's dungeon.A must for a thief:

I agree on the spell check.
The mask of strohm III seemed to protest my characters from crit hits. I don't know why. While I was wearing it, I never got crit hits on my thief. Go figure. Has anyone else noticed this?

Yeah, I had H'D with the mask of S and he never got a crit no matter how long he was in the front line. Ugly SOB though. And then there's the mask..
