mind shield with 23 wisdom

mind shield with 23 wisdom
I've got a dwarven fighter/cleric who I've taken through BG1, BG2, and most of ToB. When I got to the machine of Lum the Mad, his wisdom went up to 23 and at that time, he acquired a 'mind shield'. No items or spells giving pro charm or confusion, he just got mind shield. Wondering if anyone else has gotten this and tested exactly what you're protected from.

didn't think this was implemented in the game...
that's something new... i think i remember reading either from the baldur's gate manual or ad&d book that high wisdom score gives you protection from certain spells but i didn't think it was implemented in baldur's gate 2. i don't remember exactly what immunities are offered but it SHOULD be along the illusion spell line up, and specific mind affecting spells (feeblemind, confusion, fear, etc.) if it was correctly implemented, your character should be able to see through or dispel at least lvl 2 illusion spells (invisibility comes to mind in particular) with a score of 23. hope this helps.

thanks for the reply. it helps a bit. I haven't played much with that group since his wisdom score jumped to 23. Yeah, I'm thinking along the same lines: illusion, confusion, feeblemind, charm perhaps. If it is a permanent universal defense against enchantment/charm, that's quite the powerful ability bonus!

I wonder: if reaching Wisdom 23 gives u sort of a mental shield, and by reaching 20 (or something more) Con gives u Regeneration, are there other "special" properties for reaching very high values for the other stats?

Well, high constitution is being chatted about in another thread here on page 1. I think the other four abilities are straightforward. Strength doesn't seem likely to have extra other worldly bonuses because a high strength is easy to obtain (belts). Intelligence is the same way (potions of genius). Charisma is easy to get to 25 so special bonuses seem unlikely. Might find some special bonus with dex, as draw upon holy might is the only way I know of to get a dex over 22. Perhaps wisdom carries such a nice bonus because it is difficult to get the ability score to 23.

Well, perhaps in BG II it's easy to get 25 Strenght, but not in a normal PnP game or in some other D&D based game. I was wondering if there are these special "feats" (abusing of 3rd ed. language) in the rules. Perhaps they're really implemented.

I don't know if it's just the Potion of Genious, but I remember Dynaheir in BG1 getting Rigid Thinking by drinking one of those (not cursed, IOW) and having 22 Int.

19+ will give you 95-99% of success at writing spells, as well as an infinite amount of spells that you can write in your spellbook.
Oh, and high wisdom does not render you immune to illusions, only enchantment/charm spells.
Hmm... I just looked it all up in the AD&D 2nd ed PH, and it seems that INTELLIGENCE offers immunity to illusions.

it actually lowers your resistance to psi blast, dominate, etc...it also disappears after one day, or a week, can't remember which...
yep, its a booby prize.
wisdom is used for only 2 purposes...better choices for lim wish and wish, and extra spell slots for cleric/druids.

regarding the illusion immunity: i must have got it mixed up then. anyways i'm fairly certain that it (immunity) scales up with the ability score (so for example, int of 20 will protect you from lvl 1 illusions, 21 from lvl 2, and so on) still, it's too bad that high intelligence score won't protect you from illusion in baldur's gate 2.

I think User is right. Flanders, did you notice the mind shield appeared when your wisdom went up? I think you probably got it from the deck of many things battle of the previous level. One of the "prizes" is a mind shield. It should wear off in a week. As User states the Mindshield is actually detrimental.

Now, regarding the mind shield, I must say I haven't played with the f/c much since receiving that bonus but I can say it didn't come from the deck of many things. It came from raising my widsom 1 with the machine of Lum the Mad, which is essentially the same thing as star from DoMT. I wasn't aware there was a 'mind shield' bonus from a card in the deck.
Either way, it hasn't been tested much. Perhaps I'll CLUA in some alu fiends and mind flayers just to see what happens.
