@ladyblack
Monks are initially hard to play. Their BAB is only the same as a Cleric or Rogue, they lack the ability to use good armour and they don't tend to do brilliantly in combat.

However, after about lvl 7 - 8 they really start getting good. Excellent saves (all saves are primary), resistances to all sorts of spell effects, good Feats gained automatically, fast movement, etc., etc.

If you are having trouble, use potions (as Zel suggests) as well be aware of the mobility of monks - they can move quite fast, and so can draw off one or two monsters to fight at once. Against some creatures you will need to wield magical weapons before your fists become powerful enough to drop them. Don't multi-class monks to something (such as wizard) unless you have a specific character build in mind. Oh, if you can't open some chests, go and grab Tomi to get them open. He can do them all in Chapter 1.

If you need specific help, maybe start a new thread?

@Noober
With my Monk/Wiz/Pale I only use the major touch attacks against the toughest opponents. And you can, if quick, set up a Touch Attck-Flurry combo which works wonders. :)

Hello

Thanks for replies, I will try and be patient with her. The guide for Monks kept repeating Unarmed combat, so I haven't been giving her any weapons. I already get a - on one of her abilities because she's wearing armour (only the one made for Monks, but it's still bringing something down) so I thought I might get even more -ves if I let her fight with weapons.

I have always wanted to Multi class a wizard, but as you've pointed out, they are usually fairly weak on the lower levels, so I thought I'd start Monk and swop later. I'm a bit puzzled by the "specific character" build? I don't want to get into a discussion about 'influences' one class has on another (I have found other threads with this discussion), I just wondered if Wizard/Monk worked better than Monk/Wizard. Really, I'm experimenting with everything at present, having finshed NWN 1, and having gotten a fair distance with HOTU.

OK. Will try again. I get my new computer on Saturday, so I will at last be able to play without a screen that jerks, and with areas that load up without me falling asleep on my keyboard! Will make game play SO much easier.

Heya ladyblack,

Which monk-specific armour is your PC wearing? I prefer the Robes of the Old Order to begin with (as most monsters in Chapter 1 & 2 are not wielding magical weaponry) and later switch in to Robes of the Shining Hand in HotU. Don't worry about the minuses, they are only to skills, and can easily be overcome by a single skill point.

"Specific Character build" is when you decide at character creation (or before) "Right, I'm going to make a character with 3 lvls of thief, 5 of druid and 14 of fighter. And it's going to be 1st - thief, 2nd - druid, 3rd - thief, 4th - fighter." etc., etc. Basically it is designing your character ahead of time.

As a monk it is worth carrying around a +1 or +2 weapon - or an elemental damage weapon - specifically for some monsters. I can't remember specifically off the top of my head when monk's unarmed becomes equivalant of +1 or +2 weapons, but I know it is relatively slowly. Kamas are good monk weapons. You won't get any penalties for fighting with weapons (you can flurry with monk weapons, too).

As for Monk/Wizard versus Wizard/Monk - it really depends what you want to do with the character. Again, it is good to have a specific build in mind before taking this path.

Good luck with the new PC! Have fun.
Cheers,
TGHO
