Can anybody explain to me what BBY means after the date? is that a prevalent term in star wars that I just...missed?

Complete guess but I would imagine it means something along the lines of "Before the Battle of Yavin" - [EDIT] which was of course a pretty significant event in the empire's downfall.

Yeah, Before Battle of Yavin is my guess, too. That's interesting, that the story sort of puts a Christ-like spin on Luke as the savior of the galaxy who brought back the followers of the Force. Just one of the many philisophical elements GL put into creating the concepts for Star Wars.

Very true. Perhaps it also interesting then to note there is no real dating system in SW, at least not a consistent one. Even inside the key eras of the SW universe there is no particular central calendar. Of course it depends on the world, but you would have thought the Republic would have a center (Coruscant probably) around which all times and dates were based, yet the only way of dating things is based around key events in history.

Kind of saves continuity problems caused by settings in stone specific dates, but I guess it gives it that sense of being in that story at that point in a history (even a completely made-up one), without being tied to a concept of old and new, past and present.

The standard Star Warsverse dating system, at least the one used to tell the real life public of dates, is indeed based around Yavin. Buy a new Star Wars book, and things will be listed around that date, which makes sense, as it's the original date that most people are familiar with.

Yes, but I mean that within the actual stories, especially before the Battle of Yavin, there is more or less nothing. Just before or after another major battle or incident.

Well, in KOTOR the Ancient Empire uses revolutions of the entire Galaxy don't they? of course, it's not exactly precise...it's probably give or take a few hundred years (I am having so much trouble typing tongiht, just to let everybody know)
