Agreed. The characteristics of VTMB you describe are also the reason why Morrowind has been collecting dust since the first night I played VTMB. I haven't had enough yet, and I'm beginning to wonder if I ever will. I play two games a week still and never get tired of it. I listen to the song with the final credits, park the saved games, and start a new game in the same ten minutes. It is regrettable that Troika went out of business, because I definitely would have been first in line to buy the sequel to this.

I like cheating. LOL. However, I did run my first time through the game (which I prefer not to talk about, because it was horrible) as a female Toreador, w/o cheating. *shudders* Anyway...

Actually, I've got a question there. My current character, a female Malk, is a viscious fighter (she can put six punches into a head-runner in the time it takes the thing to pounce), but going through the Nosferatu warrens in my cop armor, it was just 'way too easy. I was set upon by one of those razor-clawed fat things and didn't take a point of damage. That got me curious and just to check I hit god-mode and it turned *OFF*. I don't recall ever turning it on. Has anybody ever had god-mode turn on spontaneously, or just *be* on for no obvious reason, Malkavian or not?

I never had it turn on spontaneously, but I had it turn OFF once spontaneously... And I got mauled... lol. I got careless thinking I was invincible... Piece of advice, ,never think you're invincible when facing a werewolf.

Excellent. That means I'm looking at a bug, not that I'm insane. This is always good.

It's not impossible, if not highly likely.

Relax. I went insane 25 years ago. I just need periodic independent verification of reality. In Real Life, I can get it from the person next to me. In a game, I need to get it from other gamers. Que sera sera

Ah, but insanity is nothing but a good thing... :D It could be that we are imagining the same thing! Lol. But not likely.

Oh, I suppose it wouldn't hurt to answer the original question, would it? I have made it all the way through VTMB 4 times without any form of cheating.

Having said that, I almost never go through a game without cheating anymore, but I cheat in a very specific place. I god-mode myself past the Werewolf. I turn on god mode when I reach the top of the tram, and turn it off before I descend.

My reason for that is that the only thing that playing that segment straight will do is waste a bunch of my time. I cannot defeat it, I cannot fight it off, and can only barely out-run it, so my sole desire is to get through that segment and on to playing the game in the least amount of time possible. The werewolf has sufficient shock value that even in god mode it gives me the willies.

Having said that, I typically do not cheat in any other part of the game unless I'm trying to find out something specific.

Please, let's keep the Noel Coward-type wit for the SYM (Speak Your Mind) forum, and stay on topic, all. Thanks.

Bugs (I think) that get me through the game

My first time through the game, I wouldn't have made it through Grout's house without the walkthrough because I never saw the switch under the fireplace. Other than that, I didn't have to cheat.

I do, however, think that I lucked out with what I think are bugs.

It only works sometimes, but I found that I could wait out the werewolf by crouching by the turnstile next to the cable car. He just kept going in and out the door. Last time, I found I could jump up on the telescope and he couldn't seem to find me. Other times, I would just keep running through the building until the cable car arrived.

Another bug (I think) is that the gargoyle gets his head caught in the top of a door. You can just whale away at him, preferably with the big mallet. Lately, I just talk him into joining up with the anarch, so I don't make use
of that bug.

Still another bug (I think) is that, if you go to the far side of the tower and find the right spot, Bat Boy stays in one place (more or less) so you can shoot him until he burns up.

I usually beat Ming by cutting off her tentacles and then getting behind one of the big cauldrons and using a machine gun on her. It doesn't always work, and I have to use some store-bought blood and almost all my ammunition.
This isn't taking advantage of a bug, but one time she got into a position and
wouldn't move.

My favorite is Brother kanker (or whatever his name is). If you go to the
corner of the room, next to the pipes, he can't follow you and he just stands
there and lets himself get shot. I use blood strike when i have it because the blood comes back to me, and I don't waste any bullets.

Someone already mentioned the Tmische (sp). Standing on the table at King's Way is the simple way and crouching in the corner seems to work most of the time. Also, the flame thrower finishes him off quickly.

Another surprise was how easy it is to get past those big mommas in the warrens. Instead of killing them, I just run past them most of the time.
This isn't a bug either, but it's interesting.

Oh, and Ming's agents, the Chang brothers -- I stay at the end of the hall so they can't surround me and I can take them on one at a time. If i'm nearly dead, I can take a breather up near the entrance. They never come up there,
so I think that's kind of unnatural.

The power of sneaking: you can get through most of the end-game without
swinging a blade or firing a shot if your sneak skill is high. I think it's
unnatural that you can wipe out a room full of people without anyone
noticing.

In summary, I don't cheat with cheats, but I do take advantage of bugs or deficiencies in the program. if they weren't there, I don't think I could make
it.

strategy is NOT cheating

modes and console use IS cheating and detracts from the game.
once you can cheat, the urge to do so whenever the game gets difficult can be overpowering : "just this bit" then "this bit too" until the player semi-automatically uses a mode whenever there is trouble.

I thought about using the console when I encountered a bug, but patched instead.

It now only takes me a few sessions to complete. I must admit that the end-game feels like autopilot because it is so linear. despite that, playing a character who I had Protean'ed up was a change. personally, I didn't like turning into a loping dog-like creature, but it was an experience. I liked the Protean night-vision, but the other aspects were not that superior - I prefer the T-blade to claws - it did more damage quicker (with melee 5).

each clan has a slightly different game - and the balance we choose each time makes the game sublty different each time. still, I would really enjoy a follow up, which seems unlikely.

Well, I've been following the advice and so far I've not had to cheat yet. I'm using a Malk (hilarious experience) this time around and am just about to start the Society of Leopold quest :)
