I use some of the standard "built-in" scripts, primarily Ranged attack and standard attack for your gibberlings/trolls/standard monsters. For more strategic fights I frequently turn off AI and control my character "by hand", as these scripts keep my cleric from turning undead, etc., and have even interrupted spellcasting during a particularly slow spell.

I tried to use customized scripts which I downloaded from somehwere with BG1 and found that my game crashed alot. The crashes were less frequent when I unloaded the custom scripts, so I have been reluctant to try any with BG2. Since I would rather spend my time playing than figuring out how to write custom scripts, I'll probably never be inclined to write my own ;)

I do not as a general rule use Scripts, i prefer to pause the game and make a tactical and strategic attack.

I tried to use the script, but i enjoy the game much more pausing the game and giving commands to all my party members.

I don't use scripts either, I prefer pausing and re-thinking. :)

Same as the other guys, at first in BG1 I used "standard AI" scripts for NPCs, but these are too limited (always do the same actions...), so I gave up and give orders myself.
I had a try at doing scripts but it's quite complicated and hopeless with spellcasters.

I always use assign scripts to all in my party. But the AI is usually turned off, but sometimes it's nice to just turn it on and get a cup of coffee :D
But I never assign ANY spell casting scripts, the computer uses them too poorly for my liking.

I want to use scripts more than I do but since those offered are too limited for my taste and I don't write my own scripts I usually pause and give orders myself.

Scripts are pretty much useless except for fighters, I don't mind them attacking as soon as they see an enemy. Thief hide in shadows script would be better if you didn't have to hear "I Am Hidden" 400 times an hour.

I always have the AI turned off. I much prefer to control the characters myself.

Amen, Skeelo, and is it just me, or do you find your thief stopping in their tracks to hide? I would get all the way over to the other side of the map just to find out my thief had stopped way back at the beginning. Forget that, no more thief scripts for me :)

I always use the scripts (only the standard ones - I haven't downloaded any) with the AI always on.

For fun, all of my party members are on their most aggressive class script. Berserker where necessary! lol!

On occasions I may change them to a passive script, ie if I am scouting and do not want them to attack. But AI is always on and they have their script returned asap.

Berserker wizards are difficult though, you have to be wary of the offensive spells memorized as I have had quite a few party injuries.. :D

My tanks in melee suddenly getting caught in icestorm or death cloud...

The only aggressive one I do not use is thief. All that "hide in shadows succeeded" taking up the dialogue box  I give my thieves a standard fighter attack...

Scripts are no good! especailly in dungeons with lots of traps! They are likely to get you blown up. Individual control is better it allow you to get your players killed how you want to!

Evil Beware! Minsc and Boo don't need no stinking scripts! We already do stupid things!

Seriously, however ... wait, this is a game. I never get serious. What Minsc said.

Boo is getting tired

Scripts are OK, if you get the right ones. The scripts that come with the game are slightly below par...

Scripts can automate some of the more tedious things, such as bashing low level monsters and healing the party. Scripts will not play the game for you. The scripting engine has severe limitations that make very smart scripts impossible.

If you would like to try what is arguably the best set of AI scripts in the world (the gSeries, not made by me!), click the "these" in my sig.

Are there any scripts that do all the normal party buffing stuff before battle? Like casting available blurrs, stoneskin, defensive harmony.... I guess you would have to have the AI off until buff time and then turn it on to buff. And maybe change scripts once everybody is buffed. I find the fight prep stuff to be pretty tedious sometimes. Though changing scripts would often would probably be even more tedious.

I always play with the A.I. turned off. It doesn't take long to assign actions to 6 characters.

The guy that does the gSeries said he'd put that in the very next upload (on the press of a hotkey). He'd also implement switching between spellcasting and attacking to do make maximum use of time (which is possible but very hard to time for players).

I'll let you know when he uploads.

I use "standard" script for Keldorn in Tob. Also had Saverok on "standard" script for a while but took that off Saverok after awhile because I wanted him to attack certain specific foes such as mages instead of just whoever attacks him first. I left the script on Keldorn because he had good protection with 50% magic resistance from the holy avenger sword and also wears the clock or mirroring. I don't use scripts for my magic users because generally I want to pick my spells in combat instead of having the computer pick the spells or send those classes into battle.
I might consider using scripts more if I could script certain spells like how a contingency spell would work before a battle comes up. Such as if my character is damaged 50% then automaticly have him drink a healing potion, or cast breach and magic missle on first magic user that my mage see who starts casting a spell etc.. or have cleric cast neutralize poison on another party member automaticly who becomes poisoned.

Would it be at all possible to set up macros for BG2? That way, you could enter in your "three rounds of buffing" macro and just call up that function when you want to use it. I think that that would result in me using more spells.
