damage done, a mystery

Post by Emnelion »

Ok, I know this has been taken up earlier but I couldn't find the ansers I wanted among the other threads; so if I'm uppsetting someone by asking again, I apology.

But I have to ask. How do the damage done work? I had a human 9lvl berserker dualed over to a 20lvl cleric. He had 18/00 strength, 2 points in quarterstaff proficency and held the Staff of Rynn +4.
I started bashing my unequipped fighter just to check my damage. And WOAH I was suprised. I did 40 damage, and not just once, all the time around 40.
How does that happen? The staff does 1d6+4 dmg, a max of 10 dmg; my proficency gives me +2 dmg, and my strength +6. That would be a total max damage of 18. Where does that extra 22 dmg come from???

The remaining damage is due to your strength. A character with 18/00 strength is always going to be able to do more damage than a character with say 12 strength, and this is reflected through a bonus to the damage caused by that character. I'm not sure of the exact figures but this is why he does 40 damage instead of 18. In a proper fight in the game though you will probably not do this damage as the target's ac and any damage reduction will come into account in a fight, thus reducing the damage done by quite a lot.

Could it be that you play on insane difficulty?

1d10+4 (Staff of Rhynn+4)
+6 (STR 18/00)
+2 specialised in Staff
+4 damage bonus vs. unarmed

= 17 to 26 damage

x2 (insane difficulty) All party members receive double damage.

= 34 to 52 damage

That would be the range of damage you describe.

Best regards,
Lark.

Nope - insane means that your opponants deal double damage to you and your party, not that you do double damage to your opponants.

Does the lowest skill level do that?

He was hitting his own partymember. Are you sure, all damage is not amplified on Insane?

Oh. Well, yeah. I do play on insane (Staff of Rynn only deals 1d6 though) and you know what? I'm quite sure that ALL damage done TO any of your party members, either from friend or foe is doubled; cause the extra 15hp you get from the berserker rage is taken away double on insane (30), so that must be why.
And I didn't think of that +4 dmg vs unarmed neither.

But mr_sir, about that strength, does strength gives you greater bonuses then those listed in the manual?? 'Cause I had counted those bonuses in.

Exactly.

The manual is correct (exceptionally) about the damage bonus due to strength.

Sorry, I missed that part of your post when I read it. My mistake as I see now you had already counted that.
