Montaillou/Barcelona English Invasion
I'm into the second half of the game and wondering WHY the english attack in swarms and WHY are they nearly impossible to fight one on one without help. My character is a human templar knight with high stats, high one handed, two handed melee skills, (no traits) and no matter what type of weapon I use it will not hit 75% of the time. The only effective way to even kill English ememies is to use excercisim skill and this requires a ton of spirit elixers to even get past the town and to get to the portal. I have tried several different strategies and always seems I run out of potions, elixers and get killed no matter what I try.
Anyone have any info to help me get better hit rate with weapons. What kind of Swords, Hammers or one hand wepons work best and what type of skills and perk are needed to make sure weapons hit more than 20% of the time??
Ready to give this game up cause the second part of this game SUCKS!!!

Oh, I had the exact same problem when I first played through the game, I suspect you don't have a high enough skill in your main weapon skill, though something may work on both the undead and hujark from before you have to remember that the game was designed in such a way that either of those could be tackled first, so when you do reach the English, they're going to be harder taking into account the kind of level you're supposed to have reached by that point.
I used Weaken Enemies and Smite a lot, I think and I saved an Inquisitor or two, who cast damaging spells at them. Of course, if you have a good weapon of fleshseeking providing a bonus to hit or something like the Everlasting that provides a bonus to your weapon skill, that would help a lot too. Piling points into your highest weapon skill would help a LOT.
Most items in the game are randomly placed though, so it's difficult to recommend a specific weapon, I think they had a relatively equal resistance to all weapon types.
I probably gave up that first time though, I was at too much of a disadvantage.

Rav,
You'd think a two handed melee skill of 104 would be enough to go toe to toe with one english enemy but without using one of the other templars or an inqisitor it's suicide. By the time I reached this part of the game my character level was 29. I had a few weapons that did have +11, +15 and +20 to hit but it was like swatting at flies in the air using them to fight. Your right these weapons did work well in the Crypt and Nostradamus quests. As far as armor goes, I was able to get Hauberk Mail armor that healed me 1 to 5 points everytime I took damage as a reward for killing Lucius the Rock Titan and this was still not enough.
As a RPG game Lionheart lacks and leaves much to be desired. The game is supposed to adjust to the level of your charater and it does not do that. The game is very unbalanced favoring the ememy characters. I've been playing RPG games for over 20 years and Lionheart is probably one of the saddest games I've played in awhile. This game should have been better tested before Black Isle released it and also should have had a few more patches to balance it.
Oh well, Least I have Final Fantasy 12 to look forward too.

I suppose the game designers expected you to have more than that level of points in a weapon skill by then. I also had it at 100 and received all those problems, the weapon skills don't really give you enough feedback on the kind of bonuses you get for putting points into the skill. If you couldn't tell through the difficulty of hitting enemies, as far as you could tell it'd only be wotrth putting in 50 points just so you can use the weapon that requires that many points.
In the end it's just a number with little way of being able to tell whether it's going to be enough in the end, so the best way is just to put in a few points eac level, even if ytou could get a better spell or something else in exchange.
It does have a fair amount of balancing, if you choose to go to the Crypts over the Caverns first, then you face weaker enemies (Greater Skeletons rather than Revanants in many cases or Brimstone Soul Reavers instead of Mana Reavers). I think the same applies for the Caverns too.
When you get up to the battle at Montaillou, you'll have reached a certain level that Black Isle have determined though, which can be a problem as you've discovered.
Unfortunately Black Isle are long gone now, so getting any patches for it (especially those that modify the power of enemies) is pretty unlikely.
Enjoy Final Fantasy...

rav,
you need to put your attack speed at calculated, that is the only way i got rid of the English people and killed the head druid. it gets harder all through the game and that was the only way i could kill them. oh and when you get to Barcelona, get as many bombs as possible from weng choi, trust me you will need them.

Hehe. I always buy as many of the 'bombs' as possible. Those are great. They only weigh something like 3lbs however many you get and when they explode they do no damage to you. Completely unrealistic, but great all the same.
The best way isn't to go Calculated though, it's certainly one way, but the best way is just to put more points in tye weapon skill, then you don't need to change the attack speed at all.
The more points in the skill, the easier you'll find it to hit enemies, as a guideline, I had 200+ points in a weapon skill by the end of the game, without that I would have found it very difficult to hit the enemies.
Anyway, as I said, it only caught me unprepared the first time. Ideally there should have been some kind of better feedback system so you know the kind of points required in a weapon skill to hit an enemy.

*shrugs* I just gradually increased it. You get a LOT of experience once you start killing off the English which definitely helps, so you'll be able to increase it quite a bit. 200 is just a good target for the end of the game. If you're able to hit the soldiers on Calculated now, I doubt you're that far off hitting them in Normal attack.
I suppose I didn't put that many points into magic skills at the same time too.

It's fine anyway, without importing overpowered characters.
Yes, the English are tough. But not impossible; not at all. You just need to be a bit sneaky. Get close enough for ONE soldier to see you, then back off, drawing him to follow you. When you have him alone, nicely away from his mates, lay into him and finish him off. Repeat as necessary. Sometimes you may have to take on more than one, but you can deal with as many as 3 at a time if have to. More, even. AND you don't have to be a tank to do it, either.
I have to say one thing, though: this is not a game to just run through hacking and slashing. You will fail if you try to play it that way unless you ARE a tank - and even then it may not be all that easy!
You need careful planning in ADVANCE of any fight.
Which means (a) being very sure of what Stats you give your char.
Which means (b) being careful about the Perks you choose.
Which means (c) stockpiling healing/mana potions. It is better to WAIT and let health/mana replenish on their own whenever possible.
Which means (d) buying and stockpiling those fire kegs Ravager mentioned, for use in emergencies.
Which means (e) using the very best weapons and armour you can obtain! ALWAYS replace current armour/weapons with better stuff as you find it - even if you have to buy it. But it's a LOT cheaper to FIND stuff!
