Haha, fooling Arkanis Gath! (spoilers)

Post by Veaman »

When I returned to the city after completing the Underdark, I went to the Thieves Guild in order to try to get Renal's BoS. Having tried it before, I knew that if you attack Renal, Arkanis Gath, a super-fast invincible assassin, shows up and kills you with one blow. I browsed the forum to see if anyone actually knew of a way to bypass this, but I didn't find anything. There IS a way though! Here's what I did:

1) I let Aerie cast "Finger of death" on Renal while my character (Wolf, half-orc, fighter-thief, BoS) stood next to him. The other two members of my party waited by the door.
2) When Renal was killed, I paused, picked up Renals loot with my PC, and ran for the door with my entire party. Arkanis showed up and followed us.
3) Once outside the door (the door leading out to the Docks, not the ground-floor of the Thieves Guild that is) two of my partymembers were killed, and Arkanis went after my PC. I the used Ring of Gaxx to hasten myself and so the chase began. I ran down the stairs passing the Sea's Bounty to Mae-Var's Guildhall and the up the wooden stairs and into the room where you met Edwin. When I entered Edwins room I had lost Arkanis, but when I went down the stairs into the room with all the doors, he showed up there. I then sped down the second flight of stairs into the ground floor of Mae-Var's Guildhall, and out onto the Docks, and what do you know? Arkanis never exited the Guildhall. I saved just to enter the Guildhall again and see that he was still there (I didn't want him popping up whenever I entered the Docks District), and yup, he was still there. Man it feels good to finally beat that guy! :D

I don't know if this strategy worked because of some bug, or if I was just plain lucky, but try it and post your result here (I'm curious)!

I hate that guy. He is basically the designers' way of saying "no, you can't do that." No IRL gamemaster worth anything would ever say something like that. At least he'd not get to say it to me twice...

Yes - although it's been discussed many times, stat draining him will kill him. (shapechange: mindflayer, one of many weapons that drain strength, wisdom, levels, etc)

Arkanis Gath is a rouge wich is hastened and kills with one blow. He will appear if you try to kill Aran Linvail or if you somehow get past the doors to Mae'vars guild without doing that quest (that's the two places I know of).

BioWare doesn't think that you should be able, or rather, allowed to kill Aran, god knows why, and that's the reason Arkanis is there. Anyway, now you can at last roleplay that part too. Hehe, Amn's criminal throne is now mine for the taking. :mischief: Thanks Veaman.

I don't think they are saying: "no you can't do that", I think they are saying: "Can you think laterally enough (be devious enough) to solve this?".
Veaman obiously can. There are several similar situations that I can think of.
Tazok walking off before you can kill him in the Bandit's camp in TOSC. The Demon Knight teleporting out in the same game. Pinching your equipment at the beginning of SoA. I'm sure that there are several others. I just haven't solved them yet, but I will. I will.

I disagree. You give the developers way too much credit if you think they knew about some of the really cheesy things that you have to use to kill that guy. If the developers had known about the bunny nuke or the trick with multiple illithid copies all capable of attacking those things would not be in the game.

Killing Aran Linvail at the wrong time would break the story and that's why they auto-kill you if you try. It's just a really clumsy solution if you ask me.

Pointless argument anyway since, presumably, none of us can read minds.
