Have no idea what it represents, but I only noticed it after I started playing with headphones....I usually play with speakers and keep them fairly low, but recently had some company in the house and decided to play with headsets on to cut down on the volume level.....
That's when I noticed that the footsteps seemed louder than usual and started hearing the "clink", the first thing I did, was check inventory to see if I dropped anything, but everything was still there...IMO, it must just be some ambient sound of traveling, maybe. :)

LOL

I noticed this as well (when playing with headphones ;) ) and didn't notice anything missing. When I was on town I thought it meant I was pickpocketed or something, but no gold went missing.

I guess it's just a funny little ambient sound...

i think i know what it is

if you have armor on when you move it makes noise, if not it's just foot steps.

I get that sometimes. Usually when I change cells. There are no clinking armour sound effects.

Sometimes when you use enchanted items your inventory shifts and makes that sound.

I guess it has something to do with what you're wearing. I play characters that don't wear armor a lot and I get the changing-clothes-sound a lot, when I'm not changing clothes.

My experience mirrors that mentioned above: whenever an enchanted weapon or armor spell wears off my character, and I previously had another weapon drawn or piece of metallic armor worn in that same place, there's a metallic sound. It represents your character "automatically" replacing what has been removed.
