When to dual from a fighter > thief
When should you ideally be dualling a fighter over to a theif whilst being able to gain the most in terms of skill points, hit points, proficincies etc ?

Level 9 allows for the most Fighter Hit Die (1d10).
Level 13 is where the Fighter gains his most attacks (an extra 1/2 ApR).
If you have a kit, you may want to wait even longer (Kensai and Berserkers gain bonuses every 3 levels, while a Wizard Slayers bonus never really "tops out").
If you do not have ToB, I'd recommend level 9.

I'm currently playing through the entire BG saga as a Kensai/Assassin (I'm going to use Shadowkeeper to change thief to Assassin when I dual) and I've decided to wait until I get the max profficiency slot in single weapon fighting and short sword, but thats more of a roleplaying decision than anything else. At the very least I would wait til level 9 or 10 before even considering dualling to thief.

By comparison that seems a large improvement.
I'm noti going to pick a kit - I want to use everything even before that UAI HLA so that's out of the picture.
What concerns me is that gaining say Whirlwind Attack or Greater WA - how badly would it compromise my thieving abilities - cause I think somewhere it said that after level 20 fighters don't get better.

Fighter saving throws improve until level 17 and thac0 until level 21, so for dualed at level 21 you get extra +8 (+10) thac0 compared to dualed at level 13 (level 9).
Sounds impressing, but is nearly useless since even when you dual at level 9 you'll hit nearly every enemy unless you roll a natural 1 once you're properly equipped.
I wouldn't bother about whirlwind, it grants 10 attacks for only 1 round. Improved hasted with 13 fighter levels you have 5 attacks for 20 rounds, even 9 attacks per round if you're dualwielding with Belm or Kundane in your off-hand. And you can even use the assassination HLA during such fights.

Even with SK you can only have 1 kit.mr_sir wrote:I'm currently playing through the entire BG saga as a Kensai/Assassin (I'm going to use Shadowkeeper to change thief to Assassin when I dual) and I've decided to wait until I get the max profficiency slot in single weapon fighting and short sword, but thats more of a roleplaying decision than anything else. Really? I fiddled with it when I was bored and wanted to see if it would work and I managed to get a kensai 3/assassin 1
Edit: ok just checked and it ended up as a figher/assassin when i changed the kit lol. my mistake. I wonder if I could use SK to give my PC all the stats and abilities of the Kensaii at the level I dual it then change the kit to Assassin. Might give it a go as I've played the game loads and just fancy playing a Kensai/Assassin lol
