Hm.... I saw a computer with a price tag of $ 17 000 on it. It was supposed to be the ULTIMATE GAMING EXPERIENCE!!!1one and so on

OK, *that* is pretty amazing!Lady Dragonfly wrote:This one:

Unless you really hate Microsoft.
I'm not sure how I feel about the rather staggering implications of being able to turn basically any surface area into a computer... but still... Wow!
You know the irony though, considering the topic of this thread..
When I tried clicking on your link with *my* old P3 Firefox froze and I had to reboot I had to watch it by using my SO's iMac G4
You know, at that price I *really* hope it is the ultimate gaming machine. Hell, forget gaming, at 17 K it had better be able to do the dishes and provide Shiatsu Massage on command as wellFiberfar wrote:Hm.... I saw a computer with a price tag of $ 17 000 on it. If I want a 5-digit price computer, I'd more likely opt for some supercomputer than a high-end gaming computer.

The problem is that the people with the most ridiculous ideas are always the people who are most certain of them.

If it was all about appearance it would be this computer bit-tech.net | Cold Fusion by SleepStreamer
But if it had to be about performance it should have about 6 Ghz, 4+ Gb DDR3 ram, a Creative X-fi soundcard, ATI Radeon HD2900XT and at least one terabyte of harddisk space.

I don't recall coming across a computer with that CPU clock speed before. The fastest processors are the Core 2 Duo line of processors as far as I know.riotfellow wrote: But if it had to be about performance it should have about 6 Ghz, 4+ Gb DDR3 ram, a Creative X-fi soundcard, ATI Radeon HD2900XT and at least one terabyte of harddisk space.

a slight update here and I guess a thread deviation.
I have very definitely decided that when I'm able (*crosses fingers*) I want to get a Mac Pro.. Although they are more expensive by a minimum of about $500, it makes a lot more sense because they are eminently upgradeable, and... ultimately they can be fitted with the NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500... which is hardly a shabby graphics card...
But, a slight change of subject here, although closely related. Basically, just where will it end?
I have been eying up LOTR Online, and I took a gander at the screen shots... They look incredible. Of course, almost photo realistic graphics (for better or worse) are starting to become the norm, so LOTRO is not alone here... But what is next, a holodeck?

Well... given that Oblivion and similar games are so based on graphics (and sadly not much else from what I understand), I can certainly see how they would shine on that kind of a set up.
Yes... a holodeck.. Can you just imagine? That leads to some interesting moral and ethical questions though..... *the mind wanders....everywhere...*

Ha, interesting question. The graphics have been proving so much over the past few years because technology wise it has been the easiest area to advance, to the point that it has dictated general computer architecture. I think things have only just begun to change. The difference between AGP and PCI is fading and now we're seeing the emergence of the first physics cards. Who knows what is next. Dynamic speech hardware. Artificial intelligence.
The advantage is that we now know how to make our micro transistors pretty much as small as they can get without burning up once we activate them. So whatever type of hardware we invent next won't have catch up on another ten years of development. Ultimately though there'll be some kind of breakthrough in super conduction quantum computers or whatever and everything we've worked with for the last decade will seem about as powerful as a pocket calculator.
To be honest, I'm waiting for computers to be gone. They annoy me. They restrict me to a single place. And they make so much noise! GRRR! I've already vowed that my next PC (or mac) will have no moving parts. Most likely I'll make it myself though. I have plans for a house-server that will pretty much regulate everything from workstations to television. No more pesky computers.

Was looking a bit into that and found an Intel Xeon with a clock rate of 3,5 Ghz having two of these (one as a master and one as a slave)would give you a clock rate of 7 Ghz. Also IBM has announced their Power6 processor which clocks at about 5 Ghz which is the highest clock speed for a single processor it the moment.DesR85 wrote:I don't recall coming across a computer with that CPU clock speed before. Another option is to overclock some high-end processor, although you would probably need some heavy duty water cooling to keep it from frying instantly.
I see. I rarely consider using those figures for the latest processors, since it looks like the manufacturers (Intel and AMD) are dropping out of the 'Gigahertz' race altogether and opting for multiple cores instead.

This is so ironic. Just yesterday the third fan gave out. So far I've 'only' had to replace a case fan and the fan on my Radeon. Now the fan on the power supply is giving the ghost. Yesterday had my first heat related crash in six months, while playing some Stalker. I was just almost getting past a really buggy point in the game too, one that already cost me a dozen reloads and one software crash.
I don't care if my next computer will be less powerful for it, there will be no fans or otherwise moving parts in it. That.. may be a problem for the harddisk, but I'm going to try finding another solution for that anyway. Damn I'm pissed. I'll probably need to spend half my Saturday rooting around in my computer now. That CPU fan had better outlive its warranty.

An opportunity to brag! Excellent!
I ordered my new laptop a few days ago:
IFL90-HR126 VBI
- Processor : Intel Core 2 Duo T7700 (2.4Ghz;8
- Hard disk : 160GB S-ATA 7200RPM
- Memory : 2048MB DDR2 667Mhz (1 x 2048)
- Video Card : nVidia GeForce 8600M GT 512MB
- Wireless network : Intel 4965AG-N
- Turbo Memory/ TV Tuner : No Intel Turbo Memory and TV Tu
- Bluetooth : Internal Bluetooth Module
- Screen : 15.4 WXGA+ (1440 x 900)
- Keyboard : US Qwerty keyboard
- Battery : 9-cells 7200mAh
Cost me quite a dime, but this is just the ultimate laptop for me!
No big screen, but 15" is really good enough for me, besides big screens only eat your power faster and add to your laptop weight a lot.
