To cheat or not to cheat, that is my question.

3rd Edition (and 4th)

Icewind Dale 2 used the third edition D&D rules (I know that there was an effort to rewrite BG2 using those same rules, but I don't know how much progress was made).

Anyway, my point is, in ID2, you could take a dwarven fighter to 4th level, then "dual class" switch him/her to cleric.

You can simulate this by modifying your character using Shadowkeeper.
Is that cheating?

I can't wait to see what 4th edition D&D looks like...

Well, effectively both 2e and 3e are entirely different rule sets and effectively, unless the entire environment, the game world, the changed as a whole, I would lean to saying "yes, it's cheating" (Although far less so than making a clone war saga and like exploits) even if the lean is by a mere faction to this side.

Reason for my opinion: In 3e, you will be facing fighter/wizard dwarves as well as various other potent class combinations since they are legal and every character is "expected" (to a certain degree) to do so. In 2e, this was never intended. You're breaking the core rules of the game's universe. You want a dual class? Play a human.

Arguably, editing NPCs so that they are a different class/multi-class not cheating. But then, you're breaking the character.

It's not something that I would do, but it is your game, and so long as you are finding it a challenge, I wouldn't worry too much.
I find that the longer I play a game, the more I put self-imposed restrictions on myself. Thus in TOSC I am put more restrictions on myself than the game does, but in SoA, so long as the game itself allows me to do something, I don't worry too much.

I do that all the time and has never considered it cheating. Just like changing portraits and sound sets, I change the appearence of my characters, and race. I like to make my characters characteristic, so I use the werewolf, drow, bodhi and similar skins quite often. I also often change race and play multiclassed humans because frankly, the difference is so small it's not worth mentioning. And the human model looks SO much better than any elf/dwarf/whatever model there is.

The only thing about it that could be considered cheating is if I use the Vampire model or something, because it's hardcoded to move faster than normal. I don't have a problem with it though, since with BoS it only takes fragments of a round to move to wherever you want to be anyway. And I don't abuse it for hit-and-run characters. :P

So anyway, this is like most other minor cheeses that doesn't really affect the gameplay and is up to each and every one of us to decide. Moving slightly faster won't make any noticable difference in major fights, as cloning and abusing Pro-Magi scrolls would.

Whilst I agree with most of your post that is totally wrong IMO. The difference is massive, and definitely 'worth mentioning'. For one example, dual classed Fighter/X don't get fighter HLA's unless they DC so late in the game that they never get to use them again!
