Dungeon Lords Overhaul - Gameplay Modification by File Read Error
Are you bored with the Collectors Edition? Would you like to encounter a much bigger variety of monsters, including all-new monsters that you didn't ever see before? Would you like to be able to get more different items (including spells, weapons and armor) from chests? Would you like to see enemies use many more different types of weapons and drop a greater mix of items? Then this modification is for you! It's the Collectors Edition Overhaul created by me, adding a lot of new monsters, unused items and features, improving treasure lists and drops, and more!
This link will lead you directly to the download! It's a zip file that contains everything you need, and it's not even hard to install it - just copy the files to the respective Dungeon Lords folders, overwriting the existing files, and there you go!
Some things to keep in mind:
- Read the readme file contained in the zip archive. It includes instructions on how to install it properly and such.
- Don't forget to backup your old files. If you have an external hard drive, it might be a good idea to just copy all the contents of your Dungeon Lords folder there so you can go back to the old version if anything goes wrong.
- Post any and all bug reports here in this thread. And of course, post anything else you want to report about this mod here, too!
- The zip archive contains a wide array of optional stuff, it's described in the readme file. Those files aren't necessary for the mod to run but they can be nice additions. I'd recommend using all of them as well. All the .dat files in the main folder are essential, though.
- !This mod works with the Collectors Edition only!
Some features of this mod (far too many to list them all, I'll just list a few):
- The most annoying type of enemy in the whole game, Killer Bees, can finally drop items now!
- Especially in areas like Vale of Ruin or Draedoth temple, you can find a lot of interesting new enemies! Some of them you may have encountered at certain fixed places already (like Gazers, Cacodemons or Templars) but some others are all-new monsters you certainly didn't ever see before (like Flame Spirits or Snake Womans)!
- Some monster types can now spawn in bigger-sized packs! This will make for more interesting battles, especially in high-level areas like the Vale of Ruin!
- All working spells are now findable, both from chests and enemies! If you were always annoyed that chests can't drop Soften, Summon Evil, Cataclysm or Divine Intervention, now it's time to start being happy because some high-level chests can actually produce these spells now! Some enemy types can drop them as well!
Optional features (you can decide whether you want them or not):
- The urgoth won't get stuck on the tower of Lake Lohr anymore!
- The automap in the left hand corner has a much better readability now!
- If you want, you can remove the annoying resource-eating grass textures from the game now, making the game run much faster (especially on slower machines)!
- Some human/elf attack animations have been replaced by others that look much better (imho)!
And now, have fun with this modification!
PS: Can a moderator please fix the typo in this thread's title? I can't seem to do it!

Maybe I can have two versions of DL on my computer? In different folders?? I'll have to check that out.
Thank you for your upload!

This should work, I have both a 1.4 and a 1.5 version on my PC and both of them work. But it gets even better, because:Maybe I can have two versions of DL on my computer? In different folders?? I'll have to check that out.
If you want, you can just load the saved game of this character with my mod activated and enjoy the new stuff! Don't have to start from the beginning again.Downloaded. No crash and burn, yet..
I'm only in the 'training area', but I have noticed three things different.
1. What are those tall.. posts? Jutting rocks/trees that were not there before? I can't seem to climb them--are they there for a purpose?
2. My female elf kicks and uses her right arm as she never did before.. I don't necessarily mind, but I'm not sure..why.. she is doing that. She doesn't have ninjutsu(sp) (fighting with hands and fists).
3. I did put in your adjustment for the map, but I prefer the beige to that stark black so returned the files to their previous contents.
..and that's about it, for now...

That's okay. I'll just go kill MORE danged spiders and snakes.........lol
No biggie. I've started a new female elf, getting her dex, agility and strength up, then will concentrate on intelligence until I get really bored and will add a few skills as I go along, just to take away penalties, etc.. You can't stop me from adding honor, though! LOL

??? Tall posts? Don't know what you mean... the trees have been there before already, but with much more leaf textures and stuff, now some of them look just like a tree stump, this has been done to improve visibility (the leaves of trees have been obscuring my view for too long) and game speed (the leaf graphics are pretty intense, causing the game to slow down, that's another reason why I removed them). They cannot be climbed, they just stand around and work like an obstacle.1. What are those tall.. posts? Jutting rocks/trees that were not there before? I can't seem to climb them--are they there for a purpose?
Well, actually this is because I wanted the human/elf enemies to be able to throw a kick and the elf character uses the same animation. For some reason I just find it more fun if the enemies can throw a kick instead of always using the same old sword swing animation.2. My female elf kicks and uses her right arm as she never did before.. I don't necessarily mind, but I'm not sure..why.. she is doing that. Okay. For me the beige was annoying because often map parts have almost the same color, making it very hard for me to see which parts of the map are explored already, that's why I made the black background. By the way, you can keep the "NPC Marker" bmp file activated if you like: it changes the color of NPC markers on the map from purple to green because the purple looked too similar to the red "enemy" marker.3. I did put in your adjustment for the map, but I prefer the beige to that stark black so returned the files to their previous contents.
Sorry about that. I thought that was clear, otherwise I would have told you earlier...Now he tells me.

I wish I knew how to take the pictures........? I could show you what I mean. I'll figure out how to do that. ITM, they aren't in the way or anything. They're just..different. Maybe I'll show the difference as both versions of DL work for me, now.. I can play either whenever I want!

You could use Fraps, it's free. It's the tool that I use for taking screen shots. By the way, does my mod work now? Did you encounter slimes already and did they drop Ophelia Worts?I wish I knew how to take the pictures........?
Maybe I'll soon add some more enemies to the game, but unfortunately I cannot give them new spells... if I could find out how to do so, the game would be much more interesting!Thank you! and more please!

I go out of town for a weekend, and come back to find the mod uploaded and its topic made sticky.
The new quarter for school begins today, and I'm almost done with the assignments that are due this week. Once I get next week's assignments done (Thursday?), I'll make time to play for a little while, and see if I can get two dungeons (probably Draedoth and Souls) finished. That would leave two more until the end sequence.
I'm looking forward to the next restart with this mod!

They have a PURPOSE! lol Danged slimes! But they do give Ophelia Wort now and I am very happy about THAT! Now I'm really looking forward to travelling to Arindale! Oh! But sometimes you get Ochre Pollen in the sewers! Yeah!! Very happy!
GTS is now what you've called your Giant Spiders, and they give more experience--good. I like that. Scorpions are called "Secret Car"?? lol What's up with that, eh? More experience for them, as well.. and more experience for snakes. Yeah.
I'm still in the training area, I don't leave there usually until I'm level 8 or 9.. It's helping to have the spiders give more experience. I'm struggling hard not to put points into bargain though..........."Please, Sir? May I?" LOL

Let me guess, you already have some Poisonous Clouds now, am I right? They have a PURPOSE! lol Danged slimes! But they do give Ophelia Wort now and I am very happy about THAT! Now I'm really looking forward to travelling to Arindale! Oh! But sometimes you get Ochre Pollen in the sewers! Yeah!! Very happy!
"GTS" actually means "Giant Trapdoor Spider". The term "secret car" is just for fun. Yes, they give more EXP because of their annoying poison - I thought that the more annoying an enemy is, the more experience it should give. It made no sense that a Dire Wolf could give more EXP than a Black Widow! So this has been changed. Several other types of enemies also give a little bit more experience, and by all means, kill the Elven Wizard in the last Trial of the Elders if you get there, he will give 1.5 million experience points (but depending on your character it can easily take a few hours to whittle him down)!GTS is now what you've called your Giant Spiders, and they give more experience--good. I like that. Scorpions are called "Secret Car"?? lol What's up with that, eh? More experience for them, as well.. and more experience for snakes. Yeah.
Just wait a little more time until you have a good feeling for how the game plays without that skill .I'm struggling hard not to put points into bargain though..........."Please, Sir? May I?" LOL
By the way, I started a new character some days ago, and for the added challenge I decided to play multiplayer mode. Of course there is nobody who I could play with, so I'm playing alone, but without the "inventory cheat" the game is much harder. My urgoth died twice already (and it's not a Minimum Urgoth ), the first time happened in the Catacombs where two Headless Brutes cornered me and chopped my head off (with inventory cheat they would have been a snap) and the second time was in Talendor where Captain Durreck and several dozen Grim soldiers, mages, goblins, goblin mages and helos all attacked me at once, they once again cornered and killed me.
Maybe from now on I will always play in multiplayer mode to make the game harder ! Cause now the game will not pause if I go into my inventory - strictly speaking, every time one enters inventory in single player mode is cheating because the player will continue to regenerate health and spells and no new monsters will spawn, this is also something that will not work in multiplayer. And of course the dreaded Cursed Spirits are a huge pain in the posterior now because I cannot wait out the freeze effect by going into inventory. They nearly killed me several times already. Now that I have a Ward of Ice crystal with lots of charges they aren't as problematic any longer but in the Catacombs I didn't have the crystal yet and had to fling fireballs and magic missiles at them while trying valiantly not to get hit or I would be slain without hope. If there is more than one cursed spirit attacking me at the same time and I do not have the crystal active, it's GAME OVER!
However, I did not die again after the Talendor incident. Now I'm past Ulm already and my Urgoth is Fighter/Mage/Knight/Sorcerer, the third tier class will be the cheesy wizard (when I started this character I figured I'd need as much spell power as I could get, so I can stand a chance against the enemies even if I don't have an ability to wait out negative effects in inventory mode). And I also found out that Nether Magic (especially summoning spells) is way more useful in multiplayer mode as I can summon rats/skeletons/borloths who will stand guard while I'm opening chests and such (the game will never pause now, even if I'm in conversation with an NPC). And this brings me to the worst problem that I encountered in multiplayer mode so far: The placing of Feros Duul in Skuldoon. Arrrrrrgh! Whenever I try to trade with him now, the game will spawn some annoying monsters close by which will continue to breath fire/locust swarm/whatever through the wall or walk around the hut and corner me in there while I'm trying to buy some nether magic from Duul! Because this is so endlessly annoying I tried to buy one of everything, sell all of them to Mundruff and then buy as many as I want from him, avoiding the random spawns, but Mundruff is one greedy as hell ******* who charges me almost double the price! And no, I'm not going to put a point into bargain.
Well, at least Rianna is in an area where random spawns are less annoying and she also sells nether/arcane magic. In the swamp the random encounters are often fish who never ever come after me while I'm standing at Rianna and buying stuff from her. The fish can go on land but only if I'm in the water, and even if they somehow managed to get inside the shop, they wouldn't be too annoying because the piranhas don't deal no damage anyway and the bloodgills are easy targets if they are on land.
Of course I absolutely owned all the Elders in the Ancients Trial. Kyusho was pushed out of his corner by my skeletons, falling down on the ground, then I locked him up with Poisonous Cloud and my Kama of Flame and he never landed a blow. The banshee was a pushover and the "Master Elder" almost put me to sleep. Of course the last remaining *******, the wizard, was harder to beat because I didn't have any flying summons (no summon haunt, no fiend, and certainly no divine intervention) so I emptied all my arcane magic on him, taking off about one third of his health. Then I tried locust swarm and poisonous cloud but it didn't work right, the locusts needed way too long to fly up to the wizard's platform and didn't do any meaningful damage while the poison cloud never flew up far enough and didn't do any damage at all. So I pinged away with shuriken and every so often I fired off more arcane magic until he finally died.
Ulm was very easy. The only oops moment was when battling Myrus Fathien, my borloth had him locked up and I was also trying to keep the sweet bladewitches at bay by summoning rats. Myrus died too far away and I did not get the key, so I was SOL and had to load my game. But everything else was no problem. Thanks to the blast nova spellbooks I let whole squads of Poison Slimes go up in smoke, greatly increasing my supply of Ophelia Worts thanks to a level 6 alchemy skill. When I was finished with Ulm two fire drakes spawned at the same time on the road back to Arindale, and I was crazy enough to attack them in melee with a dwarfen axe of fire. Hmm, I just noticed that there can be only 10 smilies in one post... that's annoying! But anyway, I ran out of ward of fire charges before I could finish one of the drakes so I stood back and fired zap, magic missile and fire burst. Of course I didn't bother with summoning. But after firing off all my arcane magic both drakes were still alive, and a squad of Drey Elves had spawned. I nova'ed them to Oblivion and decided to be insane: I went toe to toe with the first drake, without crystal ward of fire, and I KILLED THE DAMNED THING! WOOHOO! So now there was only one left, but a squad of Carrion Worms had spawned so I cast a few novas again. Now the other drake was very low on health and I used my axe again and hacked him to pieces. Hahahahahahaha!

To me the 'cheat' aspect of trading isn't using bargain to make more money, money is so plentiful anyway it doesn't matter. The real 'cheat' is selling a shopkeeper one of an item and then buying back infinite amounts. Want 1,000 Blast Novas? Easy sell one to a shopkeeper who instantly manufactures as many as you want!

First question.
what's with the gold ring on the ground near where a new character spawns? I can see it, but all it does is act as an obstacle.
Update:
Just finished the theatre, and so far so good. Ophelia Wort doesn't seem an appropriate drop for slimes though, maybe something that could be the undigested remains of the last meal; Putrid Flesh, Raven's Claw or Vulture Beak perhaps?
Any chance of increasing the time it takes for drops to disappear, I find it rather frustrating that items just dissolve in front of your eyes all the time?
On this run through I've got the settings on Easy/less by the way; it's my intention to re-play the game with this character, and by increasing the difficulty each time it may make for a slightly different feel each time. I'm already noticing a difference, this time when I exited the theatre my character is only 5th level, I've never been that low before; one of the results of the setting is far less XP of course. I wouldn't even have made it to 5th level I don't think had it not been for the extra goblin mages and ballistas the mod adds to the game.
Sorry about the double posting Mods, but I didn't want the question to get lost.

Well, guess what, there is no other way to buy blast novas in this game at all! And you still have to pay 3'750'000 gold pieces for one thousand books, which will take a loooooooooooooong time to acquire without bargain cheating. To me the 'cheat' aspect of trading isn't using bargain to make more money, money is so plentiful anyway it doesn't matter. Already wondered how long it will take until someone asks that question... it's a Ring of Talendor . Well, actually it's bugged, I had replaced the annoying bush/shrub textures and found out that I cannot make them disappear completely. Therefore I had to replace them by another texture and wanted to use something as small as possible.First question.

This mod is not trying to be "realistic", it's trying to make it possible for the player to be able to find EVERY kataal. I think there were supposed to be ravens, monkeys, vultures etc. as enemies in the game but they didn't make it in the final version and the programmers were too lazy to make the kataals findable, so I went ahead and gave certain monster types a chance to drop ones that weren't findable before.Update:

Well, that would be great... no idea where the function controlling this can be found in the game files though. Remember, Dungeon Lords is actually unmoddable and it's a wonder to behold that I even managed to create this mod! There are still a ton and a half of things that I cannot change, unfortunately...Any chance of increasing the time it takes for drops to disappear, I find it rather frustrating that items just dissolve in front of your eyes all the time?
Anyway, have fun playing!

I thought that the rings were simply texture/mesh replacers when I saw them all over the plce, just wanted confirmation, I spent quite some time trying to pick it up though!
You can see the spikes Kate was referring to here, ironically you can also see a ring.
I still think something indigestible like claws or beaks would be better, the Ophelia wort could be added to the stuff that are dropped by Ents (can't remember what they're called in this game). I do appreciate the idea though, and the efort you've put in. My biggest criticism, in fact only real criticism (the other was just a suggestion), is the silly names you've given the creatures you've modified. Upo and Secret Car may mean something to you, but I think it undermines the good work you've done.
PS
PPS I've just come across a problem. I just killed a minotaur and for some reason I only got 200 XP for it.

New mod..
I haven't had much time to play these last few days, but I should mention that I'm getting *really* ticked with these danged goblins...*whine*
I'm still in the sewers, just about the enter the theater basement. I have found ONE ochre pollen to go along with all that Ophelia Wart. *heh* You really ARE a tease, FRED. *cough*
Thanks, galraen for posting that picture of the spike. I haven't yet mastered how to post a picture.
Personally, I rather like the greens and grasses--yes, they slow up the game, but they also add a bit ..character..? to the game? ie, the snake in the grass IS harder to see, and the shrubs DO hide the bad guys--I rather like that; adds a little suspence/suprise. Unfortunately, I ended up copying the mod file onto my back up so I'd have to re-install the game if I wanted the orginal green file back, so I'll live with being able to see my enemies better.
*fighting of what seems like unending goblins and slimes in the sewers*, Kate--who really doesn't sound like a LADY when she's playing. *heh*

About those endless spawning goblins in the sewers, there is a way to prevent them spawning, although it's too late for you now Kate.

Random, 'wandering' monsters don't appear in the sewers until you trip the trigger. The trigger is unlocking the bridge that leads to the ballista goblin. If you avoid picking up the key you can jump onto the arch to the left of the bridge, then jump to the other side. This avoids the trigger and you then only get the planned monsters until you exit the theater. You could call it a glitch exploitation, I call it avoiding a trap! .

This is kind of you, Cionaoith. Thank you! I'm not entirely certain which files do what, but in FRED's zip file, there is a grn_model folder that he gives us the option to use or not. He warns us quite appropriately that we should make a back up. I just thought I'd see what it would look like. That's the folder that provides the 'spikes'.Cionaoith wrote:Let me know what file(s) you need to get your grass and shrubberies (I will bring you a shrubbery!) back, and I'll zip and upload it for you.
When I made my 'back up', I just copied *everything* from the dreamcatcher folder into a 'dream2' folder, and adjusted the shortcut accordingly. Piece of cake. Now I had two working copies of the game, and I could play one 'modded' and one UN...
Until I decided that I really didn't want the changes that the grn_model made and copied the grn_model folder back into what I thought was the right directory.
So now both games run with changes that the grn_model folder makes. *heh*
Does that provide enough information to let you know which files I need? I hope so! LOL
